Primus Gooding, Jr.

HAMPTON - Mr. Primus Gooding, Jr., affectionately known to his family and friends as,“Coon”, was born, June 14, 1945, in Hampton County, South Carolina, to the late Primus Gooding, Sr., and Marie Gooding. He was a 1965 graduate of the former North District Training School in Varnville, South Carolina. At an early age, he joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. In later years, he faithfully attended Huspah Missionary Baptist Church, where he was active with the Men's Ministry, and assisted in many other capacities of the church.

Mr. Gooding was a United States Army veteran. He was a former employee of Westinghouse where he worked in the shipping Department. After years of dedicated service, he retired from Nevamar in Hampton.

His life was full of blessings. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. His sense of humor and his favorite sayings, and the sound of his laughter, will linger in our ears forever. He was a devoted father, brother, endearing grandfather, uncle, good neighbor, and a gracious friend.

In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Eugene Gooding, and Barney Gooding; Sisters: Mary Ann Risher, and Edna Gooding.

God called him home to rest on, Friday, April 22, 2016, at Ralph A. Johnson - VA Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories, his children: Synphanie (Greg) Boyce, Charlotte, NC, Gerry (Michelle) Powell, Richmond, VA, Primus (Latrelle) Powell, Hampton, SC, and step-son, Burt Williams, Hampton, SC; One brother, John H. Gooding, Hampton, SC; Sister-in-law, Christine Gooding, Hampton, SC ; Brother-in-law, James Risher, Gifford, SC; Six grandchildren: Davon Williams, Dondre Williams, Daijai Williams, Aaron Harper, Alasia Powell and India Curry (whom he called, his special little girls); A host of nieces and nephews; Special niece, Samantha Gooding Newton; loving cousins and friends; including a special friend, Danny Morris.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Huspah Missionary Baptist Church, Hampton.  Burial with military honors was held in the church cemetery.

Riley’s Funeral Home, Hampton Chapel, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Cyndie Jones Hiers

HAMPTON - Mrs. Cyndie Jones Hiers, 52, of Hampton, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016 at her residence.

Funeral services were 2 pm, Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.  Interment followed in Johnson St. Paul Cemetery, Hampton.

Born June 21, 1963 in Jacksonville, Florida, she was a daughter of the late W.R. Jones and Betty Ruth Benton.  She was very active with wildlife rescue and enjoyed making cakes and embroidering.  Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who centered her life around her family.  She fostered many children throughout the years and was a mother to everyone.

Surviving are: her husband Mark Anthony Hiers, Sr. of Hampton; children; Roy Keil (Susie) of Fairfield, Ohio, Linda Simmons of Varnville, Jessica Carson (John) of Beaufort, Miranda Cook (Gene) of Hampton, Michelle Aiken (Joey) of Hampton, John Walling, Jr. of Hampton, Tiffany Rodriguez (Japhet) of San Antonio, Texas, Blease Walling (Nicole) of Hampton, Billie Thomas (Dean) of Brunson, and Mark Hiers, Jr. of Hampton; sisters, Shelly McCullum (Mike) of Silver Lake, Wisconsin, Brenda Psyhogios of Silver Lake, Wisconsin, and Brenda Pollard (David) of Walterboro; brother, Paul Jones (Jen) of Ingelside, Illinois; 26 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
