Sarah Frances Heape Dempsey

Sarah Frances Heape Dempsey, 90, of 19995 Pocotaligo Road, Early Branch, SC, died Tuesday evening, June 28, 2016, at John E. Harter Nursing Center, after an extended illness.

She was born in Hampton County July 5, 1925, daughter of the late William Vincent Heape and Florrie Platts Heape.  Mrs. Dempsey was a great cook and loved her family, gardening, music and her church family.  She was the widow of James Earl Dempsey.

She is survived by daughters: Helen D. Tuten of Varnville, SC, Elizabeth D. Hadwin (Otis) of Brunson, SC, Margaret D. Mathis (I. W.) of Hampton, SC and Betty D. Terry (Bert) of Hampton, SC; son, Willie J. Dempsey (Kathy) of Early Branch, SC.  There are 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.  She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, 2 sisters, Dora Lee H. DeLoach and Madeline H. Peeples, and 1 sister-in-law, Shirley W. Heape.  She was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Randall Dempsey, and brother, Earl V. Heape.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 in the Sand Hill Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Don Turner, with burial following in the church cemetery directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.

 Flowers will be accepted, or if desired, a memorial may be made to Sand Hill Cemetery Fund, c/o Freddie Mixon, 111 Mary Street, Hampton SC, or to Sand Hill Baptist Church, 15480 Pocotaligo Road, Varnville SC.

Frances Brunson Mason

Mrs. Frances Brunson Mason of Furman (Hampton County) died Wednesday afternoon in the Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, SC.  Mrs. Mason was born in Hampton County, May 23, 1929 a daughter of the late Edward Benjamin and Della Rebecca DeLoach Brunson.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Furman United Methodist Church. Surviving are: Sons: George O. Mason Jr. and wife Trudie of Heath Springs, SC, and Kenneth Francis Mason of Walterboro; Brother: Edward Benjamin Brunson Jr. of Orangeburg; and 4 grandchildren.  Mrs. Mason was predeceased by her husband: George O. Mason Sr. and son: Nicholas Mason.

Graveside services were held 5 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 in the DeLoach Cemetery near Nixville, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

Cynthia Marie Herndon

Mrs. Cynthia Marie Herndon, 69, of Varnville, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.  She was the widow of Ernest Marion “Ham” Herndon, Jr.

A memorial service was held 11 am Friday, July 1, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.

Born December 13, 1946 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late William Carl “Bill” Watters and Mary Lee Mixson Watters.  Mrs. Herndon was a retired LPN, having worked at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Estill Nursing Home and Ridgeland Nursing Home.  She loved being a nurse, reading, going to movies and going shopping.  She loved to travel to The Great Smokey Mountains and especially loved Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  Most of all she loved being with her family and friends.

Surviving are: her daughters, Cindy Davis of Varnville and Beverly Herndon Meetze and her husband James F. Meetze of Columbia; grandchildren, Andie Davis Liam Davis, Timothy Meetze and his wife Brittany, James Christian Meetze, Brandon Meetze and Ryan Meetze; brothers, Harry Watters and his wife Painee of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Michael S. Watters and his wife Susan of Goldsboro, North Carolina; nephew, Toby Watters and his wife Amber of Newport News, Virginia; niece, Jennifer Adkins and her husband Brad of Goldsboro, North Carolina; several great nieces and nephews; and one great grandchild on the way.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Hampton County Relay for Life.
