Mr. Benjamin McArthur Ayer, of Locust Street in Hampton, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 6, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Ayer was born in Charleston County November 1, 1942, a son of the late Hallie Edward Ayer and Neta Minerva Crosby Ayer. He was a Quality Control Inspector with Ayer – Tech Construction Company. He served in the Marines from 1960 to 1964 and served in Vietnam. He was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge for 40 years, the Jahab Shrine Club, and coached little league baseball for several years. Mr. Ayer was also a member of Varnville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are: wife, Ann Tuten Ayer, of Hampton; sons: Benjamin Ayer II and wife Cheryl and Christopher Blaine Ayer, all of Hampton; daughter, Lisa Young and husband Mark of Varnville; four grandchildren he raised: Cole Ginn of Cummings, Emily Ginn of Varnville, Kelsey Stanley and husband Phil of Hampton, and Cassie Ginn of Hampton; brother, Jimmy Ayer and wife Ellen of Hampton; sisters: Shirley Freeman and husband Miles, and Linda Rhodes and husband Jenks all of Brunson; and other loving grands and great-grands: Brett, Caleb, Peyton, Gage, and Layla Ayer, Brandon, Madison, Savannah, and Kimberly Young, Colby, Autumn, Lucian, Cherish, and Trinity Ginn, Tradd Stanley, Allison, James, and Allen Watson. He was predeceased by a sister Yvonne Parker.

Visitation is Saturday, Dec. 10, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, located at 300 Mulberry Street from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The casket will be placed in the church Sunday, Dec. 11, at 1:00 p.m. prior to services.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, in the Varnville First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly. Burial will follow in the Ayer Family Cemetery, at Rivers Bridge State Park near Ehrhardt, with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the Autism Research Institute, 4182 Adams Avenue, San Diego, CA 92116, or to American Heart Association, Congenital Heart Disease, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979.
