Karen R. Newton of Estill, S.C., entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital in Savannah, G.A.

Karen’s journey in this world began on Sept. 15, 1962, in Clyo, G.A. to Elder and Mrs. Cecil Andrews. She was reared in a spiritual home along with her nine siblings. She was educated in the Effingham County School System. In her youthful years, she was a member of Faith Deliverance Tabernacle, Inc.

In 1983, Karen married her love, Willie James Newton. In this glorious union of 33 years, they were blessed with two children: Jeffrey and Jessica. Later, she joined the First Thankful Fillibranch Baptist church as a true Christian and woman of Faith. She served on the gospel choir, kitchen committee, and in any other capacities that were asked of her.

Karen’s love for children proved her calling as she became employed with Hampton County School District 2 and continued to work for 31-years until her health failed. During her tenure at HSD2, she cultivated many friendships and helped shape many youthful lives.

A great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend with a contagious laughter, Karen loved family, friends and laughter. Karen’s generous heart touched many lives. She was a woman that never bit her tongue to tell you her feelings about anything. Her no-nonsense, keeping it real, presence and personality will be greatly missed.

Karen was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Newton and her sister, Marcia Warren.

Fond memories of Karen will be cherished by: her husband, Willie James Newton; daughter, Jessica Newton; granddaughter, Zaria Brown; parents, Elder Cecil and Bessie Andrews; two sisters: Collette Andrews and Juliet (Henderson) Cooper; five brothers: David (Latrell) Andrews, James Arnell (Faye) Andrews, Kelvin (Carol) Andrews, Randolph (Yolanda) Andrews, and Timothy Andrews; four sisters-in-law: Aline Newton, Ruby (Charles) Simmons, Louise Smith, and Rosa (Henry) Gordon; three brothers-in-law: Donald Newton, John (Elnora) Newton, and Louis (Lula) Newton; two devoted family friends and honorary brothers: Jimmy Mungin and Franklin Ruth, Jr.; special friends: Valerie Brantley, Gloria Colon, Eugenia Gordon, Edna O’Banner, and Carolyn Wright; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at First Thankful Fillibranch Baptist Church, 2591 Steep Bottom Road, Estill, S.C. 29918, with burial following in the First Thankful Fillibranch Baptist Church cemetery.
