Evangelist Vionnia Adams

VARNVILLE - Evangelist Vionnia Adams, the beloved daughter of the late Deacon Jasper Dunbar and Mrs. Maggie Ree Williams Dunbar was born April 3, 1938 in Varnville, Hampton County, SC.

On Wednesday morning, April 5, 2017, at Medical University Hospital, Charleston, SC, Vionnia’s Maker called her from earthly toils to rest.  Even as our family grieve, we humbly say, Amen.

At an early age, “Vionnia” confessed Christ as Lord and Savior and became a baptized member of Zion Fair Baptist Church, Varnville, SC.

Evangelist Vionnia Adams was educated in the public schools of Hampton County, SC, a graduate of the former North District Training School, Varnville, SC Upon graduation, she relocated to Brooklyn, NY.  In New York, “Vionnia” attended schools of higher learning.  She became gainfully employed in the education industry, assisting in educating children with learning disabilities.

Evangelist Adams, while in New York, met her soul mate and united in marriage to the late Deacon James Adams, Sr.  The Lord blessed this union with two children.  She continued her zeal for God and became a member of All People Church Apostolic Faith, NY.  It was there that she was called into ministry as an Evangelist.

After the death of her mother and the declining health of her father, Evangelist Vionnia Adams retired from work and returned to her native community of Camp Branch, South Carolina to assist in the care of her father.   She restored her membership to Zion Fair Baptist Church, Varnville, SC.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents:  Her husband, Deacon James Adams, Sr., A daughter, Toni Brown; A brother, Vern Dunbar; and a sister, Maggie D. Williams.

To mourn her home going and cherish the time we had are: (2) Sons: Smoloskey (Ella Mae) Dunbar, Varnville, S. C. and James Adams, Jr. of Jamaica, NY; (4) Grandchildren: Emanuel Brown of Bronx, NY, Latoya Minor of Orlando, Fla., Tristan Adams and Ava Adams, both of Shirley, NY; (1) Great grand; (2) Sisters-in-law; A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and caring friends.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Zion Fair Baptist Church, Varnville with burial in the Zion Fair Cemetery.

Washington’s Funeral Home of Hampton was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Harford Billy Corbin of Pocotaligo Road, near Varnville, died Wednesday, Apr. 5, 2017, at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. Corbin was born in Pritchardville (Jasper County) January 6, 1927, a son of the late William Edward Corbin and Florence Isabelle Hall Corbin. He had retired from the Fruit of The Loom Company in Lexington, and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.  He had attended Sand Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are: His wife, Elizabeth Jean Mixson Corbin of Varnville; One son, Tyrone Corbin and wife Jennifer of Varnville; and grandchildren: Matthew Tyler Corbin, Allison Elizabeth Faye Corbin and John Bryson Harford Corbin.

Mr. Corbin was pre-deceased by nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 9, 2017, in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial in the Sand Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Mell Cook Hiers of Allendale, died Thursday afternoon, Apr. 06, 2017, at the Harter Nursing Facility in Fairfax after an extended illness.

Mrs. Hiers was born September 18, 1934, in Colleton County, a daughter of the late Herbert and Doris Hoover Cook. She had retired from the South Carolina Department of Social Services and worked with special needs children. She had been a member of the Allendale Garden Club, and was a member of the Allendale First Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Will Rogers Hiers.

Surviving are: Her husband, Rueben Isaac Hiers of Allendale; Sons: Larry Hiers and wife Connie of Ogallala, Nebraska; Dale Hiers and wife Rachel of Barnwell, Mark Hiers and wife Patsy of LaGrange, Georgia; and Stephen Hiers of Rock Hill; Step Children: Brenda Johnson and husband Steve of North Charleston, Chip Hiers of Aiken, and Janice Walz and husband Scott of Hampton; Grandchildren: Cher Rogers, Ashley Hermesch, Brandon Hiers, Lindsay Diemoz, Lauren Schumacher, Sara Hiers and Will Hiers: nine Great Grandchildren, six Step Grandchildren and nine Step Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Apr. 12, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Allendale First Baptist Church, with burial in the Swallow Savannah Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.
