Mr. Joseph “Jack” Brant of Yemassee, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 10, 2017, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Hampton County.

Mr. Brant was born in the Ulmer community in Allendale County, November 18, 1927, a son of the late Henry Eugene Brant and Mamie Sue Deer Brant. He was a former Railroad Agent for many years, and also, had served as a Rural Mail Carrier as well as Postmaster of the Ulmer Post Office. He served in the Army and was a member of the Varnville First Baptist Church where he attended the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a member and Vice Commander of the American Legion Post # 108. Jack loved his family, playing golf and the Gamecocks.

Surviving are: sons: Jack “Tony” Brant of Yemassee, Rick Brant and wife Dana of Lexington, and Marty Brant and wife Shannon of Columbia; sisters: Jewel B. Davis of Denmark and Lina B. Herring of Hephzibah, Georgia; and grandchildren: Katy, Brooke, Marlee, Connelly, Tyler and Tanner. There are 8 great grandchildren. Mr. Brant was predeceased by his wife Amaryllis B. Brant, and three brothers.

Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton, and on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. at the church prior to services.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Varnville First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly with burial in the Great Salkehatchie Cemetery in Ulmer.

The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the Great Salkehatchie Cemetery in Ulmer.

Rev. Thomas Raymond Smith of Thorn Circle near Estill, died Sunday night, Oct. 15, 2017, at his residence after a brief illness.

Mr. Smith was born June 27, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of the late Raymond and Viola Ranta Smith.  He had retired as a teacher in the Middle and High Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, and then settled in Hampton County.  He also, served as Pastor of the Gillette United Methodist Church and the Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church in Allendale.

Surviving are: one son, Eric Thomas Smith and wife Melissa of Jacksonville, Florida; two grandchildren: Nathan and Jordan Smith also, of Jacksonville, Florida; and a special friend, Crystal Sharpe of Estill.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, in the Hampton Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Visitation will be immediately following the services at the cemetery.

Mr. Norman Allen McMillan, Sr. of Ellis Street in Hampton died Tuesday evening, Oct. 17, 2017, at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. McMillan was born June 16, 1933, in Ehrhardt, a son of the late James Vernon McMillan and Thelma Sue Priester McMillan. He had worked with Elliott Sawmill as a Dry Kiln Operator Supervisor for many years and had served in the Hampton National Guard Unit for 16 years. He was an Ordained Minister, serving at Mt. Olive Baptist Church and Scotia Baptist Church. He had served as a State Constable for 37 years, was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge for 60 years and a member of the Jahab Shrine for 50 years. He was a past president of the Woody Williams Saddle Club, was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time with his family.  He was a member of the Gideons and the Sandy Run Baptist Church. 

Surviving are: his wife of 65 years, Wilma Adrienne Belger McMillan of Hampton; and children:  Faye Mole (Clary), Libby Crosby (Edwin, Sr.), Allen McMillan, Jr. (Val), and Joy Ginn (Derryl, Sr.). There are eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Mr. McMillan was predeceased by a brother, Jim McMillan.

Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, in the Sandy Run Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Reid, Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly and Rev. Mike Freeman, with burial in the Sandy Run Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Blanche Chesser Carroll Vickers was born on March 30th, 1937, and passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017.
After a short illness, she passed peacefully with family present. She leaves three children, five grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; also, one brother and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family wishes instead of flowers that donations be made to a charity of their choice. Arrangements are being handled by Palmetto Cremation Society.

 

Mr. Reginald “Reggi” Gooding Smith of Lightsey Street Extension in Hampton died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, evening at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. Smith was born September 6, 1938, in Savannah, a son of the late Albert Vernon Smith and Gertrude Gooding Smith. He had retired from Georgia Pacific as a Lead Operator and was also a Saw Sharpener. He had retired from the National Guard, was a member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge and the Varnville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are: daughter, Jo Ann Rushing and husband Matt of Summerville; and two grandchildren: Mikaela and Alex Rushing; also a special friend and caregiver, Elaine Hadwin.

Visitation was held Saturday, Oct. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial in the Hampton Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Mrs. Amanda Lynn Mock Evans of Ridgeland died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston after an extended illness.

Mrs. Evans was born in Hampton County, October 30, 1966, a daughter of Buddy Mock of Scotia and Linda Jones Mock Mixson of Brunson.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Scotia Baptist Church.

Surviving are: her husband, Donald Daniel Evans of Ridgeland; son, Joshua Evans and wife Fallon of Hampton; daughter, Chasity Lynn Evans of Ridgeland; brother, Bryson Hamilton Mock of Ridgeland; sisters: Lindsay Allison Flanagin of Scotia and Sophia Renee Mock of Ridgeland; three grandsons: Carson Brinson, Joshua Daniel Evans, Jr. and Brady James Evans; her step-father, Ronald Mixson of Brunson; and best friend, Cindy Heape.

Visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, in the Oak Grove Cemetery on Rivers Hill Road near Grays, conducted by Rev. Heyward Evans and Rev. Bryan Toni.

Mrs. Frances Louise Donehue Proveaux of Pond Town Road died Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston after an extended illness.

Mrs. Proveaux was born July 21, 1938, in Brunson, a daughter of the late Herman David Donehue and Elverta Crosby Donehue Hodge. She had retired from Westinghouse Corp. in Hampton after 30 years of service as a Press Operator. She was a member of the Brunson Baptist Church and was the widow of Honie M. Proveaux.

Surviving are: son, Ronnie Proveaux and wife Wanda of Brunson; daughters: Mary Cook and husband David of Brunson; Shirley Hill and husband Tommy of Savannah; and Teresa Proveaux of Rincon, Georgia; brother, Jerry Donehue of Allendale; sister, Betty Hodge of Cross; grandchildren: Jeffrey and Timmy Cook, Brittany Hill and Lindsay Daughtry. There are 12 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. Mrs. Proveaux was predeceased by: a sister, Jamie Youmans and a brother, David Eugene Donehue.

Visitation was Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at 2 p.m. prior to the funeral services at 3 p.m., both held in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. R.P. Hodge, with burial following in the Rivers Cemetery.

George Robert "Bobby" Parker Jr., 72 of St Augustine FL passed away on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017. He was a native of Hampton S.C. and resided in St. Augustine, FL since 1992. Mr. Parker was the owner and operator of Parker Pools Inc. and a graduate of The Citadel. 

He is survived by: his wife, Anne-Marie Parker; his son, George Robert Parker III; stepson, Nicholas Henderson Phillips; daughter in-law, Trudy Kay Crouch; grand-children: George Robert Parker IV., Susan Elizabeth Parker, Gavin Michael Parker, Madeline Elizabeth Phillips and his dog Kobe. He is predeceased by son, John Michael Parker; parents: George Robert “Bob” Parker, Sr. and Dorothy Rhodes Parker; and brother, Benjamin “Benny” Parker. 

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at Craig Funeral Home, 1475 Old Dixie Highway, St. Augustine, FL 32084, with Dr. Lee Weaver officiating.  

All are invited to the Shriners Club, 250 Brainard Dr, St. Augustine, FL 32086 from 1-4 p.m. to share their wonderful stories and memories of Bobby.

Toni Lynn Rivers of Melvin Circle in Hampton died Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at the Medical University in Charleston.

Toni was born in Savannah, January 10, 2006, a daughter of Robert and Amy Rivers Thomas.  She was a sixth grade student at Hampton Elementary School and loved being a country girl at her home, involving anything outdoors.

Surviving besides her parents of Hampton are: sister, Kaylea Ferguson; step-sister, Emily Thomas; step-brothers: Dakota Thomas and Triston Muirhead; maternal grandmothers: Deborah Copeland and Janice Walz; paternal grandparents: Patricia and Dannie Thomas and Roslyn Westover; and several aunts: Brandy Rivers Dixon, Pamela Simmons, Maria Petersen, Shannon Rivers Odom and Cathy Dandridge. Toni was predeceased by: her grandfather, George Rivers, Jr. and her uncle, George Rivers, III.

Visitation was Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chapel located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial at the Johnson-St. Paul Cemetery.

Mr. John Franklin Ramsey, Sr. of John Penn Road near Pineland died Monday evening, Oct. 30, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Ramsey was born in Ridgeland, S.C. April 1, 1944, a son of the late John William Ramsey and Madie Buckner Ramsey. He had retired as a Bread Salesman with the Merita and Sunbeam Bread Companies in the Charleston and Goose Creek areas. He was a member and Deacon of the Lawtonville Baptist Church and a member of the Furman Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are: his wife, Dorothy Fulton Ramsey of Pineland; son, John Ramsey, Jr. “Frankie” and wife, Monica of Myrtle Beach; daughter, Lisa R. Suesser and husband John of Summerville; and grandchildren: Brook Defibaugh and husband Dillon of Summerville; Brittany Ramsey of Myrtle Beach; Kyle Suesser and Kallie Suesser, both of Summerville.

Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chapel in Hampton located at 300 Mulberry Street West.

Jack Morris, 91, husband of the late Eunice Fail Morris for over 60 years, died Thursday, Nov., 2, 2017.

Mr. Morris was born in Barnwell, SC and a son of the late Roy and Bertie Hadwin Morris and was the father of the late Linda F. Morris. He was a truck driver for Thomas and Howard Wholesale Co, worked at Ulmer Chevrolet Co, was co-owner of Jack and Free's Service Center and retired from Jack's Welding.

He was a member of Kline Baptist Church for over fifty years where he served as a deacon and treasurer. Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Kline Baptist Church with Reverend Finley Limehouse officiating. Interment will follow in Kline Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Eugene Morris (Dosha); one daughter, Katherine M. Metzger (Rob); four grandchildren, James Freeman, Jodi Kearse (Andy), Lindsey Johnson (J.R.) and Christian Grafing; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Jimmy Morris (Ann) and one sister, Mell M. Furman.

The family will receive friends Monday, November 6, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC (803) 584-2492.

Estill, S.C. - Pastor Julia Mae Robinson, 64. Death summoned our loved one late in the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2017, at her residence in Estill, S.C.

Pastor Julie Mae Robinson, daughter of the late Willie Robinson and Idella Robinson was born, Sept. 9, 1953, in Allendale County, S.C. She began her Christian Journey early in life by attending Ebenezer Holy Church along with her late mother and family.
Pastor Robinson attended Estill High School and was a graduate of the class of 1971. She furthered her education at Beaufort School of Nursing, Beaufort, S.C., receiving her bachelor's degree in nursing. After becoming a faithful nurse, later she was appointed Pastor serving with her mother at New Sweet Rock Refuge Center, Estill, S.C.
She will be greeted at the Gates of Heaven by her parents Mr. Willie Robinson and Mrs. Idella Robinson, and her loving sister, Hattie Williams.
Thanking God for his affectionate grace and mercy during this hour of sadness are her devoted sisters: Dorothy Meyes, Geneva James, Viola Hankerson, Della C. Mincey, and Delorice Robinson; one brother; Eugene Robinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sympathizing friends.
We rejoice and thank God for the life Pastor Robinson lived among us, and for taking her to the land of Glory, as he has promised all the faithful.

Services for Pastor Julie Mae Robinson were held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, at Sweet Rock Refuge Center, Estill, S.C., with Evangelist Janie Mae Youmans, Eulogist, and Bishop John Bowers, presiding.

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Mr. Howard Dixson, 79, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Gifford, S.C., was called home to be with our Lord Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017. He passed away in New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Our loved one has been taken, but God has gained another angel. Peace comes to us knowing that he is not suffering with pain, and hopelessness.
Mr. Howard Dixson greeted life on August 15, 1938 in Fairfax, S.C., to the late William Dixson and Dollie Mae Williams. At an early age, he joined Long Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Gifford, S.C. where he served faithfully until moving to New York, where he continued his worship and service with Bright Light Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York. "He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears off all faces."

Mr. Howard enjoyed watching TV during his spare time. He was an advocate of sports and the biggest of biggest Jets Fan. He retired from Long Island Carpet, Inc. after 30 years of service.
Mr. Howard was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life Hattie Dixson, of 47 years. To this union two children were born. One son preceded him in death, Derrick Lamont Dixson, in 1995.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Jeanette Wesley.
Mourning his loss, yet rejoicing in his purposeful life are his survivors: His Loving Wife of 47 years, Mrs. Hattie Dixson; one son, William Dixson III; one granddaughter, Willow Dixson, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; One godson, Reverend Jermaine Henderson, Fairfax, S.C.; One sister, Willie Mae Dixson, Fairfax, S.C., one brother, Henry Dixson, Kansas City, M.O.; Three sisters-in-law: Edith Wright, Gifford, S.C., Sallie Dixson, Kansas City, M.O., and Lillie Thompson, Gifford, S.C.; Two brothers-in-law: James Wesley, N.J. and Sylvester Thompson, Gifford, S.C.; Seven nieces: Mary Hankerson, Brooklyn, N.Y., Theresa Porter, Lexington, S.C., Monica Wright, East Orange, N.J., Sherry Orr (Kelvin), Hampton, S.C., Chantay Myers, Fairfax, S.C., Cynthia Dixson, and Karen (James) Perkins, Kansas, M.O.; Three nephews: Kenny Myers, Fairfax, S.C., Jasper Hankerson, Monroe, N.C. and Michael Dixson, Kansas City, M.O.; along with a host of devoted cousins and friends.

Nixville, S.C. - Mother Bertie Mae Newton, 84, of 300 Chocolate City Road, Nixville, S.C., on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, gained her Golden Crown from earth to eternity in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family as she took flight to be with the Lord. The future is not ours to know, and it may never be, so let us live and give our best, never anticipating or doubting the power of our Savior; asking nothing of tomorrow except-THY WILL BE DONE."
Mother Bertie Mae Newton was born in Hampton County, S.C., Oct. 17, 1933, to the late William Newton and Patience Duncan. She was an active member of Efferson Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her demise.
Mother Bertie Mae was full of love, and laughter. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, vegetable garden, fishing, shopping, riding her bicycle, and walking up and down Chocolate City Road. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and attending church.
Mother Bertie Mae was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Franklin Ruth Sr. This union was blessed with nine children. One son preceded them in death.
As she enters the pearly gates, she is greeted by: her parents, husband, one son, Willie James Ruth, siblings, Julia Mae O'Banner, Ella Bell Moore, Lena Bryson, Rose Ella Green, Grena Evans, Arthur Lee, Herman O'Banner and Eddie Jiles, along with three grandchildren.
Cherishing her love and fond memories are: six sons: Johnny (Patricia) Ruth, Franklin Ruth Jr., Deacon Carl Ruth, all of Nixville, S.C., Leroy (Tara) Ruth, Walterboro, S.C., Michael (Sophia) Ruth, Hilton Head, S.C., Clarence (Shay) Ruth, Ocala, F.L.; Two daughters: Mary (Leon) Driessen, Hilton Head, S.C., Pastor Marshell (Leanthony) Smith, Hampton, S.C.; Three step-daughters: Francina Hopkins, Lexington, S.C., Penny (Ben) Holmes, Patricia Comier, both of Hampton, S.C.; Four sisters: Patricia Chamber, Ethel Bell Doctor, both of Greenville, S.C., Margaret Newton, Washington, DC, Lizer Thompson, Cummings, S.C.; Two brothers: Ricky and Billy Ferguson both of Greenville, S.C.; one brother in law, Jack Ruth, Varnville, S.C. The Home Going Service was held 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at Efferson Missionary Baptist Church, 5146 Browning Gate Road, Estill, S.C., Reverend Dr. Hallie Capers, Pastor and Eulogist and Elder Patricia Brantley presiding.

Interment will take place in the Cypress Creek Cemetery, Pineland, S.C.

Charleston, S.C. - Jenny Lynn McKenzie Thomas, 76, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Born on Sept. 7, 1941 in Bamberg, S.C., she was a daughter to the late James and Inez Priester McKenzie. Jenny was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 147, the VFW Post 445 and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church in Ehrhardt, S.C. Jenny was a graduate of Ehrhardt High School and Columbia Cosmetology School. She retired after many years of service with the S.C. Commission for the Blind. Jenny will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include: her husband, Curtis Leslie Thomas of Charleston, S.C. and her daughter, Lynn Jamison of Walterboro, S.C.; her grandson, Christopher, and son-in-law, Todd; a brother, J.M. McKenzie of Lexington, S.C.; her sisters, Jackie Hiers and Barbra Ann Hiers, both of Ehrhardt, S.C. and Montye Jean DuBose of Charleston, S.C. and Louise Caldwell of Columbia, S.C.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Estill, S.C. - Mr. James Coleman “Sonny” Jarrell of Furman Nixville Parkway near Estill, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 15, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Jarrell was born July 24, 1934, in Hampton County, son of John Thomas Jarrell, Sr. and Lillian Woods Jarrell. He was the former owner and operator of the Nixville Country Store for many years and was also a mechanic and operated a used car dealership. He was an Army Veteran and loved to hunt, fish and gardening. He was a member of the Nixville Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are: Daughter, Charlene J. Ashworth of Estill; Brothers: Bobby Dean Jarrell, Sr. and Tommy Jarrell, both of Estill; Sisters: Virgie Plummer of Estill, Sadie Moran of Jacksonville, F.L., Katie Jarrell and Betty Mae Howard, both of Savannah; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Jarrell was predeceased by: Brothers: Edward Jarrell, Lee Jarrell, Sr. and John Thomas Jarrell, Jr.; and Sister, Lillie Rose Jarrell.

Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Bertie Mae Ruth

Mother Bertie Mae Ruth, 84, of 300 Chocolate City Road, Nixville, SC was born in Hampton County, SC, October 17, 1933 to the late William Newton and Patience Duncan.  She was an active member of Efferson Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her demise.

Mother Bertie Mae was full of love, and laughter. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, vegetable garden, fishing, shopping, riding her bicycle, and walking up and down Chocolate City Road. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and attending church.

Mother Bertie Mae was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Franklin Ruth Sr., this union was blessed with nine children, one son preceded them in death.
As she enters the pearly gates, she is greeted by her parents, husband, one son, Willie James Ruth, siblings, Julia Mae O'Banner, Ella Bell Moore, Lena Bryson, Rose Ella Green, Grena Evans, Arthur Lee, Herman O'Banner and Eddie Jiles along with three grandchildren.
On Monday, October 30, 2017, Mother Bertie Mae gained her Golden Crown from earth to eternity in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family as she took flight to be with the Lord.

EARLY BRANCH - Mr. Kenneth Wayne Eckler, 56, of Gilkerson Lane near Early Branch, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017 in Beaufort County.

Mr. Eckler was born in North Carolina, March 23, 1961, a son of the late Norman and Catherine Burnt Eckler.  He was a Diesel Mechanic and worked with Certified Fleet Services in Beaufort County.

Benjamin Martin Heape

BRUNSON - Mr. Benjamin Martin Heape, 74, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2017 at his residence near Brunson.

Mr. Heape was born in Cummings, June 28, 1943, a son of the late Charlie Wilson and Luelle Cook Heape.  He retired from Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton as a Press Operator after 43 years of service.  He was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge and the Jahab Shrine Club.  He was married to the late Jan Valentine Heape.

Surviving are:  One daughter:  Sonja Heape of Brunson; Sister:  Margie Woods of Gillisonville; Grandchildren:  Josh Moseley and Tristan Shinholser; and one great-grandchild:  Joshua Dylan Moseley, Jr.  Mr. Heape was predeceased by two brothers:  Jack and Charlie O’Neal Heape.

Wallace Gilbert Harriott

PINELAND - Mr. Wallace Gilbert Harriott, 70, of Gillison Branch Road in Pineland, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Harriott was born in Hampton, February 28, 1947, a son of the late Frank and Effie DeWitt Harriott.  He was a retired truck driver, having worked with both Luray Grain Company and J.F. Wyman Grain Company.  He had attended the St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church and was a former member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge # 216.

Vernelle Crapse Gibson

HAMPTON - Mrs. Vernelle Crapse Gibson, 87, of Luray Highway near Hampton, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at her residence.

Mrs. Gibson was born in Varnville, November 30, 1930, a daughter of the late Brooks and Iona Murdaugh Crapse.  She had worked at the Allendale Garment Company and the Gemco Manufacturing Company in Varnville where she retired as a Supervisor.  She was an active member of the Jahab Honeys at the Jahab Shrine Club and was a member of the Hampton First Christian Church.  She was the widow of Marion Peeples and Lloyd J. Gibson, Jr.

ASHTON COMMUNITY – Mr. Patrick Clark Avant, 56, of the Ashton Community, entered into rest Thursday afternoon, January 4, 2018, at the Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.

Funeral services were conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2018, in Saint Paul Primitive Baptist Church, located on Highway 601 near Hampton, Elder Robert Dobson officiating.  Interment followed in Cross Swamp Cemetery, Lively Stone Road, Islandton.

Born Jul. 24, 1961, in Walterboro, he was a son of the late John Clark Avant and the late Maxine Bowers Avant. He was a machinist with South Carolina Electric and Gas in Tillman. He was HeHe was a lifelong member of Saint Paul Primitive Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Pat, as he was known by most, will always be remembered as a true Christian man who dearly loved his family. He centered his life around his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved farming as well as fishing, horses, and tractors. 

Surviving are: his wife of thirty-two years, Mrs. Donna Grantham Avant; three children: Lauren Avant Murdaugh and her husband Myles of Ashton; John Patrick Avant and his wife, Ashleigh of Ashton; and Horace Matthew Avant and his fiancé Amanda of Givhans; and three sisters, Linda Avant Hiott and her husband Foche of Ruffin, Minerva Avant McDaniel and her husband Ricky of Fork, and Carol Avant Priester and her husband Randy of Ashton. There are five grandchildren: Cole Murdaugh, Gage Murdaugh, Jaxson Crowley, Levi Avant, and Knox Murdaugh; his mother-in-law, Emily Schurr Grantham; and an extended hose of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

ISLANDTON, S.C.  – Mrs. Anne Elkovich Murdaugh, age 94, entered into rest Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 3, 2018, at her home in Islandton.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Jan. 6, 2018, from Rice Patch Christian Church, 15246 Sniders Highway, Islandton with the Reverend Dr. Larry Smith officiating.  Interment followed in the Peniel Baptist Churchyard, 37 Forks Road, Islandton.

Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Helvetia Township, P.A., she was the last surviving child of the late Stephen and Anna Troyan Elkovich. She was born in a small mining town in Pennsylvania where her father worked in the coal mines and her mother was a housekeeper and stay at home mom. The family moved to Ohio when she was thirteen. She attended Lorain Schools and worked at Arvay Potato Chip Company for six years.  She came to South Carolina and married Heyward Murdaugh, who she met when he was in the Army. They were married for fifty-eight years at the time of his death in 2004. Together, she and Heyward raised and provided college education for four children. She worked at the Islandton Post Office, Youngwear Products, and Westinghouse Corporation, where she retired after more than twenty years of service. She enjoyed volunteering with the Kindergarten children at Bells Elementary. She was a member of the FCL Club for twenty-five years and the H2U Group and took part in the Holiday House as well as other functions of the group.   She dearly loved to bake and donated many of her cakes and pies to different causes. She was raised as a Catholic, and after moving to Islandton, joined Rice Patch Christian Church, where she was a faithful, longtime member and had been active in various aspects of the church. She loved her church and her Lord. She loved her cat, Goldie, who was a good and faithful companion. Her children were her pride and joy and she enjoyed seeing them grow up. She liked reading religious and health materials and writing letters. 

Surviving are:  four children, Treva Baker (Gary) of Blairsville, G.A., Myra Merrill (Skip) of Summerville, Tony Murdaugh of Islandton and Barry Murdaugh of Islandton, her best friend, Sharia Mae of Islandton; five step grandchildren; thirteen step great grandchildren; as well as a host of loving nieces and nephews.

VARNVILLE, S.C. – Mrs. Sally Sweeney entered into rest eternal Wednesday morning, Jan. 3, 2018, at her home in Varnville.   She was the wife of the late Mr. Dan Sweeney for 25 years.

The Mass of Christian Burial was conducted 12:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2018, from Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Hampton, Fr. Norbert Mendonca officiating. The Final Commendation and Farewell followed in Hampton Cemetery, Holly Street, Hampton.

She was born in 1926 in Pittsburgh, PA, to James and Leora Donavan Shannon. Sally was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, studied at Duke University and received a Master’s degree from The University of South Carolina.  She taught and was the librarian at Hampton Elementary School and Ben Hazel Elementary School for many years.  She loved books and passed her love of reading to many students. 

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Marshall (Jim); sons: Jim Sweeney (Maricela), Jack Sweeney (Denise) and Dan Sweeney (Lisa); grandchildren: Christy Sweeney Bacon, Dan Sweeney, John Sweeney, Will Marshall, Jennifer Sweeney Syno, Kathleen Marshall, Michael Sweeney, Erin Marshall, Jack Sweeney, Tom Sweeney and Liam Sweeney; and great grandchildren: Connor, Bryson, and Ashyn Bacon, Braedon Syno, Nathan Rutlen, Natalie Sweeney, and RJ Sweeney.

FAIRFAX, S.C. - Mr. Roy Milson Gibson, Jr. of Saluda Avenue in Fairfax died early Wednesday morning at his residence.

Mr. Gibson was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, Jul. 17, 1961, a son of Virginia Ray Gibson Kinard of Fairfax and the late Roy Gibson, Sr. He was a construction worker and welder.

Surviving besides his mother are: his fiancée, Louise Faulkenberry of Fairfax; sisters: Patricia Reid and husband Johnnie of Blackville, Norma Pittinger and husband Duane of Bluffton; brother, Douglas J. Kinard, Jr. and wife Meredith of Allendale. There are two grandsons: Kenneth Harley Youmans, Jr. of Aiken and Donald (Buckshot) Youmans of Columbia; one granddaughter: Charlotte Youmans of Columbia; six nephews and one niece. Mr. Gibson was predeceased by his step-father, Douglas J. Kinard, Sr.

PORT WENTWORTH, G.A. - Ashley “Carson” Taylor Bush passed away on the morning of January 5, 2018.  Carson was born in Estill, SC on Oct., 18, 1974. He was the son of Ashley and Dianne Bush.

Carson was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, received his Master of Divinity from University of St. Mary of Lake (Mundelein Seminary), and an MBA from Clemson University.  He worked for the Brice Hotel in Savannah, Georgia and was about to return to Orlando working for Walt Disney World.

In addition to his parents, surviving are: his partner, JJ Sheets; three sisters, Lauren Ivans (Richard), Jennifer Madsen (Rob), Stephanie TeBake (Joe); and one brother Jeb (David).  He also had three nephews and two nieces. In addition to his human family, he had two dogs and five cats.

The family received friends on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 6, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the home of his parents (975 Grass Hill Road, Estill, S.C.) A graveside service was held on the Bush family farm at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, with Rev. Robbie Robinson officiating.

As he was a lover of our country’s national parks, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Park Foundation at 1110 Vermont Ave. NW Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005 in his memory.

HAMPTON, S.C. - Mr. John Albert Harrington of Ann Street in Hampton died Saturday night, Jan. 6, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Harrington was born Dec. 14, 1930, in Bristol, Tennessee, a son of the late William Edward Harrington and Kathern Billups Harrington. He and his wife, Betty Jean Hendrix Harrington moved to Hampton in 1958 to work for the Westinghouse Corporation as a Chemical Engineer and retired as Plant Manager after 38 years. He continued to stay in touch with the company and staff giving advice and working when needed. He also had been a Boy Scout Leader in the Hampton Community and was a Navy Veteran.

Surviving besides his wife, of Hampton, are: daughter, Sherre Harrington of Rome, Georgia; and a granddaughter, Sarah Dryden O’Brien of Minneapolis. Mr. Harrington was predeceased by a son:  John Kelly Harrington; and a brother, William Earl Harrington.

HAMPTON, S.C. - Mrs. Jackie Ann Kinard Bridges of Ellis Street in Hampton died Tuesday, Jan. 09, 2018, morning at the home of her mother in Hampton.

Mrs. Bridges was born in Hampton County Jan. 4, 1954, a daughter of Addie “Melda” Freeman Kinard and the late William Jackson “Jack” Kinard.  She was an Administrative Assistant with the New Life Center and also operated Ann’s Town and Country Beauty Salon.  Ann was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and was active in the Ladies Club and the Companion in Christ Bible Study Group.  She was a member of the Lillie Chapter # 27, Order of the Eastern Star.  Ann was the widow of Robert Anthony “Andy” Bridges.

Surviving besides her mother of Hampton are two daughters: Nicole B. Smith and husband Bryan of Grays and Kim Bridges of Charleston. There are two grandchildren, Cade and Levi Smith.

Visitation was held Thursday, Jan. 11, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

HAMPTON, S.C. - Mrs. Lillian Teresa Phillips Johnson of Ginn Altman Avenue in Hampton died early Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2018, at her residence.

Mrs. Johnson was born in the Nixville Community, Aug. 6, 1934, a daughter of the late Monroe and Maggie DeLoach Phillips. She had worked at the Bi-Rite Grocery Store in Estill and also worked as cashier at the Estill Pharmacy for 18 years. Mrs. Johnson also worked as a caregiver for many families in Hampton County, and was an outstanding wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Nixville Church of God for 59 years and had taught Sunday School for 43 years.

Surviving are: daughter, Diane Johnson of Hampton; sons: Lee Johnson and wife Debbie of Brunson, Michael Johnson and wife Loraine of Nixville and Steve Johnson and wife Beverly of Varnville; brothers: Donnie Phillips of Jesup, G.A. and Jack Phillips of Lena. There are 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by: her husband, Leroy Franklin Johnson; brother, Frank Phillips; sister, Beverly Wilson; grandchildren: Christopher Johnson and Colt Mixson; and one great-grandson, Trey Mixson.

VARNVILLE, S.C. - Mr. Carl Thomas “Bud” Freeman of Lowndes Lake Road near Varnville died Sunday night, Jan. 14, 2018, in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Freeman was born in Beaufort, Aug. 22, 1940, a son of the late Thomas Hamilton Freeman and Nellie Ruth Reddick Freeman. He was a skilled master carpenter and enjoyed wood working. Bud worked at Parris Island for many years in several different departments and served in the Hampton National Guard Unit. He graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1959 and was a member and Deacon of Deep Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are: his wife, Trudie DeLoach Freeman of Varnville; son, Vincent Carl Freeman and wife Janice of Denver, North Carolina; daughter, Jill F. Herring and friend James Wing of The Rock, G.A.; sisters: Dot F. Drawdy of Brunson and Evon F. Necaise of Lobeco; mother-in-Law, Dora H. DeLoach of Varnville; brother-in-Law, Richard C. “Dick” DeLoach and wife Jane of Raleigh, North Carolina; and grandchildren: Steven and Ryan Herring and Nicholas Freeman.  There are a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Tuesday morning, Jan. 16, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Deep Branch Baptist Church followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. Glen Samples, and burial in the Sand Hill Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - William Tison Bowers, 62, of Columbia, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018. Born Dec. 30, 1955, in Varnville, S.C., he was a son of the late Grover Ford Bowers, Jr, and Macie Tison Bowers. Mr. Bowers was a 1978 graduate of the Citadel and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He will be forever remembered as a loyal friend, always putting others before himself. Mr. Bowers was a devoted disciple and true follower of Christ.

Survivors include his loving wife, Julie Roman Bowers; sons, William Tison Bowers, Jr., and his fiancé, Beverly Hammond Duvall, and Charles Roman Bowers; siblings: Martha Bowers Simons (Paul) and Grover Ford Bowers, III (Derbi); as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

The family received friends at the family home, 4837 Carter Hill Drive, Columbia on Thursday, Jan. 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A service was held 10:00 a.m., Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Derek W.H. Thomas and The Rev. David H. Lauten officiating. A graveside service followed at 3:00 p.m., at Lawtonville Cemetery, Estill, S.C.

EARLY BRANCH, S.C. - Mr. Tanis Carroll Hudson, Sr., formerly of Early Branch, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, in the Summerville Medical Center.

Mr. Hudson was born in Ridgeland Aug. 21, 1940, a son of the late James Elliott Hudson and Ruby Trimnal Hudson. He had worked as a Welding Quality Control Inspector.

Surviving are sons: Tanis C. Hudson, Jr. of Fairfax, Christopher and Anthony Hudson of Adamsville, A.L.; daughters: Teresa Hudson Stokes of Summerville and Robin Diane Hudson Boyles Diaz of Marietta, G.A.; and one brother, Donald Hudson of Summerville. There are nine grandchildren. Mr. Hudson was predeceased by: a son, Timothy Hudson; and a brother, Bobby Hudson.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at the Ebenezer Cemetery in Yemassee directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.  Friends visited with the family immediately following the service.

BARTON, S.C. - Mary Drayton “Dray” Robertson Meyer age 74, widow of the late Ralph “Jackie” Meyer died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018.

Mrs. Meyer was a born in Ridgeland, S.C. and a daughter of the late William Madison and Flossie Hamilton Robertson. She was a hairdresser having worked at Nor-Lena’s Hair Stylist for many years, was a member of Fairfax Chapter #65 O.E.S. and a member of Brunson Christian Church. Dray was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Graveside Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at Hamilton Cemetery, Hampton, S.C. with the Rev. Mike Reed officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

Survivors include two sons: Jacky Meyer (Angela) and Bucky Meyer (Kim); three grandchildren: Caroline Meyer, William Meyer and Savannah Meyer; two sisters-in-law: Myrtle W. Meyer and Audrey M. Meredith (Terry); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, William F. Robertson and two sisters: Caribel R. Sullivan and Elizabeth “Betty” R. Gray Copeland.

WALTERBORO, S.C. - Mrs. Barbara Harvey McMillan, 92, of Walterboro, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at her residence. She was the wife of the late James “Jim” Vernon McMillan, Jr. 

Family received friends at the church from 2 o’clock until funeral services at 3 o’clock, Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2018, at Sandy Run Baptist Church, 2100 Sandy Run Road, Hampton. Interment followed in Sandy Run Cemetery.

Born Sept. 7, 1925, in Miley, she was a daughter of the late Charles Harvey and Agnes Cook Harvey. She was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church. She was a loving homemaker who always centered her life around her family.

Surviving are: her children: James Vernon “Jim” McMillan, III of Pike Road, Alabama, Steve McMillan, Sr. of Ruffin, Nancy M. Stackhouse and her husband Bill of Dillon and Jan M. FURMAN, S.C. - Mr. Ray Dolph Cooper of Coffee Corner Avenue in Furman died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Cooper was born in Kline Aug. 31, 1930, a son of the late Ray and Gladys McTeer Cooper and was married to the late Vera Smith Cooper. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Furman United Methodist Church. Ray was a member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge # 216, The American Legion Post # 108 in Hampton, and the Coastal Amateur Radio Association where he was an Amateur Radio “Ham” Operator – V4ZQF. He was the owner and operator of Smith and Cooper Company in Furman for 45 years.

Surviving are: sons: Mark G. Cooper and wife Mary and Ray Dennis Cooper and wife Monikue both of Furman; grandchildren: Mark Daniel Cooper, Laura Madeline Cooper, Heather Heape Cook and Allana Harley Seegers. There are 3 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Cooper was predeceased by a brother, Evander M. Cooper.

HAMPTON, S.C. - Mr. James Robbie Cook, Sr., of Bamberg Highway near Hampton, died Thursday evening, Jan. 18, 2018, in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Cook was born in Hampton County Aug. 6, 1928, a son of the late Robbie and Pauline Cook.  He joined the Army and fought in the Korean Conflict. Once getting out he found employment with Westinghouse Corporation as an inspector and worked there until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church where he had been an active deacon, Brotherhood Director and Training Union Director. His true love was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are: sons: Ricky Cook (Paula) of Early Branch, Chris Cook (Cathy) of Varnville, Andy Cook (Carlene) and Timmy Cook (Leslie) both of Hampton; sisters: Virginia Sauls of Walterboro, Ann Terry of Florida; brother: Martin Cook (Lorraine) of Augusta; grandchildren:  Kimberly Sullivan (Jake), Brandon Marchyshyn, Tiffany Marchyshyn, Brandon Cook, Brittany Cook, Trish Malone, Casey Cook (Emily), Megan Davis (Daniel), Scottie Cook, Anthony Cook and Caroline Cook. Mr. Cranel Eugene “Gene” Smith of Aiken Avenue South in Fairfax, died Tuesday afternoon at his mother’s residence.

 

Mr. Smith was born in Hampton County June 22, 1973, a son of Margie “Libby” Herndon Smith and the late Virgil Eugene “Gene” Smith.  He had worked with the South Carolina Department of Transportation for 27 years as the Resident Maintenance Foreman and was a member of the Allendale County Fire Department for 10 years.  He had attended the Fairfax First Baptist Church.

 

Surviving besides his mother of Fairfax are:  His wife:  Dania Dawn Davis Smith of Fairfax;  Sons:  Dawson Eugene Smith and Ethan Cranel Smith both of Fairfax;  Sisters:  Margie Elaine Rooker and husband Jeff of Hampton and Cindy Hauptmann and husband Mike of Allendale;  Brother-in-law:  Jody Davis and wife Jennifer of Hampton;  Nieces and nephews:  Alex Innis, Zachary Davis, Tristan Davis, Jesse Rooker, Christy Rooker, Travis Hauptmann and Daniel Hauptmann.  Mr. Smith was predeceased by his grandparents:  Cranel B. ESTILL, S.C. - Mr. John Julian Kloczkowski of Two Sisters Ferry Road near Estill, retired Marine and Minister, died early Saturday morning, Jan 27, 2018, in the Colleton Regional Medical Center in Walterboro.

Mr. Kloczkowski was born Nov. 9, 1932, in Yorkville, New York, a son of the late Gabriel and Catherine Klockowski Kloczkowski. He had retired from the Marine Corp as a Master Sergeant and served as a Minister in the Hampton County area for many years. During his Military career, he was a Journalist and Military Photographer serving two tours in Vietnam and one in Korea. Prior to enlisting in the Marines, he served in the Naval Reserves and also worked for Nikon Camera Company in Tokyo, Japan. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 108 and the V F W where he had served as Chaplain. He was married to the late Mary Lowell Harvey Kloczkowski.

Surviving are:  step-daughters: Mary Lynn Griner of Lands End, Melissa Griner Healy and husband Kent of Savannah, G.A.; brothers: Tadeus Kloczkowski of Pine Bush, N.Y., Leon Kloczkowski and wife Carol of New Hartford, N.Y., and Matthew Kloczkowski of Cicero, N. Y.;  and a special caregiver, Candice Blair Hutto. There are four step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by a brother, Edward.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located in Hampton.

HAMPTON, S.C. – Mrs. Clara Blocker Brown, 94, of Co-op Road West, Hampton, entered into rest Wednesday evening, Jan. 31, 2018, at Pruitt Health Care in Estill. She was the wife of the late Mr. Aaron W. Brown.

A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Feb. 10, 2018, Varnville First Christian Church, 201 Sycamore Street, Varnville, with the Reverend Mike Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony in the church sanctuary. 

Born Nov. 29, 1923, in Walterboro, S.C., she is the youngest and last surviving child of the late Arthur and Carrie Blocker.  She was a member of the Hampton First Baptist Church and will always be remembered for the love she possessed for her family.

Surviving are: two daughters: Glenda Freeman and her husband Wilbur of Hampton and Celest Mitchell of Hampton; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Brown; five grandchildren: Mike Freeman and his wife Debra, Tami Harvey and her husband Joe, Al Brown and his wife Nissee, Ashley Brown and Missy McCallie; twelve great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Lamar Brown.

ALLENDALE, S.C. - Edward Henry Hanna, III of Allendale went to our Lord and Savior on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018. Born May 1, 1954, in Hampton, S.C., he was the son of the late Edward Henry Hanna Jr. and Barbara Newman Hanna. Mr. Hanna was a member of Lawtonville Baptist Church. He will be remembered as a generous and loving person extending hospitality to all people including family and longtime friends as well as new people he met. Mr. Hanna was the founder of The Hanna Company and creator of BIG ED’s HEIRLOOM BBQ SAUCE. Mr. Hanna demonstrated his faith in Christ by the way he generously gave to others and treated people.

Survivors include his immediate family: loving wife, Barbara Mack Hanna; Matthew Dukes Hanna and wife Alissa; Ellen Jones, Daniel Jones and wife Ashley and their son Wil; siblings: Chris Hanna and wife Laurie, Fred Hanna and wife Mary; loving nieces: Rachel Hanna and Annie Laurie Hanna; and nephews: Michael Hanna and Fred Hanna Jr., to whom he was affectionately known as, “Uncle Beatie.” He is also fondly remembered by his many other nieces and nephews. “Big Ed” as he was known to friends had the “heart of a lion.”

GRAYS, S.C. - Mr. Jeremy Michael Harris, Sr. left this earthly shore on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at his residence in Grays, South Carolina. Jeremy was born on Aug. 25, 1979, in Montrose, P.A. to Jean Stone and Ralph Harris.

His favorite pastimes were fishing and spending time with his family.

Jeremy was a loving husband and father, a big teddy bear! He was a true friend and a protector of his family and friends.

Jeremy met and married his wife, Sandra Steen Harris, in 1997. He was the father of six children. There are four daughters: Chasity Jones (Steven), Dawn Harris, and Ariel Harris, all of Grays, S.C. and Ashley Harris of Summerville, S.C.; one son, Brandon Harris of Grays, S.C.  One son preceded him in death, Angel Jeremy Michael Harris, Jr. 

Also preceding him in death were his father-in-law, James Steen; one sister, Michelle Mattison; and one niece, Jordyan Rogers.

To cherish his memories are his wife of the home, Sandra S. BRUNSON, S.C. - Mr. Clarence McDuffy McMillan, Sr. of Corbin Lane near Brunson, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 6, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. McMillan was born Nov. 24, 1934, in Hampton County, a son of the late Joe Frank McMillan and Lucy Mole McMillan. He had been a farmer for 61 years and loved the outdoors, especially turkey hunting and fishing. He was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church.

Surviving are: son, Newton McMillan and wife Robin of Brunson; brother, Jimmy McMillan and wife Maude of Brunson; daughter-in-law, Martha Cannington McMillan of Okatie; and grandchildren: Kattie and Jonathan McMillan, and Morgan McMillan McGraw. There are a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. McMillan was predeceased by his wife, Laura Hughey McMillan; son, Clarence McMillan, Jr.; and a brother: Joe Frank McMillan.

Visitation was held Friday, Feb. 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located in Hampton.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2018, in the Sandy Run Cemetery conducted by Rev. Paul Reid.

VARNVILLE, S.C. - Mr. Frank Arnold McClure, Jr., 88, of Varnville, passed away after a sudden illness on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at MUSC in Charleston.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Saturday morning, Feb. 10, 2018, at First Baptist Church, 165 Palmetto Avenue West, Varnville, S.C.  Interment followed in the Varnville Cemetery on Pine Street.

Born Sept. 22, 1929, in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of the late Frank Arnold McClure, Sr. and Emily Griffin McClure. Frank graduated from Varnville High School, Class of 1946, where he was a member of the high school band and played on the basketball team. He worked at the old Varnville Theater and Fairfax Theater, running the projectors. After high school, Frank attended Clemson, where he graduated with the class of 1950.  He served his country in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict. He was recently selected to travel on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Frank's life was centered around God, Family, Church, and his hometown. As a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church of Varnville, he was a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. He was the first lay moderator of the Allendale-Hampton Baptist Association, and served on the board of the South Carolina Baptist Foundation. His love of the Lord led him to serve on several mission trips. Additionally, he helped to start and support Harmony Baptist Church and Oak Grove Baptist Church. He often served as the hands and feet of Christ, as he sought to meet the needs of many individuals in his community. Most recently he was able to see one of his life-long dreams come to fruition with the opening of the First Baptist Church Life Center.

He was a devoted husband and loving father, step father, grandfather and uncle. He treasured spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. One of his passions was researching his family genealogy, and reconnecting with family members across the country. He loved people and in the words of his children, he never met a stranger.

Frank dearly loved the town of Varnville and devoted many hours to ensure his community would grow and prosper. He served as Mayor of Varnville for two terms; served as a Town Councilman; and was a volunteer fireman. He was instrumental in developing the Varnville Town Park, including the construction of the gazebo and the relocation and preservation of the old depot. His lifelong love of trains also led him to seek out an authentic caboose to add to the park. He was president of the Varnville Cemetery Association. He assisted in writing the book, “Railroads and Sawmills,” a history of Varnville. He served on the Hampton Regional Medical Center Board. Frank had many interests, to include teaching his children to fish, piloting his Cessna airplane, and communicating with people around the world on his Ham Radio. He refereed high school basketball and football, and later in life was a proud member of the Hardee’s Coffee Club.  

Frank also believed in a strong work ethic. During his professional career, he owned and operated the Varnville Hardware and McClure Insurance Agency. He was the President of the Hampton County Bank, where he worked for more than 40 years.  He was a former President of the South Carolina Independent Bankers Association. 

Surviving are: his wife, Dickie Polk McClure; children: Vicki McClure McCormick of Orangeburg, Terri McClure Downer and her husband Dave of Centre Hall, Pennsylvania; Arnie McClure and his wife Mitzi of Charleston; Joey Harter, Jr. and his wife Frankie of Brunson; Cindy H. Johnson and her husband Keith of Fripp Island; and Debbie H. Bullard and her husband Perry of Brunson; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Wilson McClure; daughter, Merri McClure; and a sister, Emily McClure Doar.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: First Baptist Church of Varnville Life Center, Post Office Box 306, Varnville, S.C. 29944.

HAMPTON, S.C. - Frank Breland Miley, Jr., 79, of Hampton, S.C. died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, in Agape Hospice House in Lexington, S.C. He was born Feb. 28, 1938, in Walterboro and was the only child of Frank Breland Miley and Gertrude Cone Miley.

The small town of Early Branch was a perfect place for a boy that loved nature, fishing and hunting to grow up. After attending Wade Hampton High School, Frank graduated from Newberry College and began his career at Reichhold Chemicals in Hampton. He retired as Plant Manager of BTL Chemicals in 1988 after having a stroke.

Frank was a member of First Baptist Church of Hampton where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. He was a member of the Hampton County Watermelon Festival Committee and was in charge of the fishing contest for many years. One of his favorite hobbies was raising Labrador Retrievers and training his dogs for field trials and was also known to make good use of them with his skills in a dove field. He had been a member of the Palmetto Retriever Club and was also a Rotarian. Even though his activities were limited after his stroke, he retained his enjoyment of life and loved his family and pets.  His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was a Gamecock fan and loved TV and beach music. Music reminded him of shagging and playing his trumpet. 

Frank is survived by his wife of 59 years, Brenda Golden Miley; a son, Frank Breland “Trey” Miley, III and daughter-in-law, Theresa Burbage Miley, of Lexington, S.C.; and a daughter, Mindy Miley of Charleston, S.C.  He is also survived by grandsons: Frank Breland Miley, IV of Seattle, W.A.; and Brooks Miley and Bryce Miley, both of Lexington, S.C.  He was predeceased by an infant granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, at Hampton First Baptist Church with Rev. Emerson Wiles officiating with burial following in the Hampton Cemetery directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Visitation was in the church sanctuary from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. before the service.

SAVANNAH, G.A. - Harvey Alvin Dobson, Jr., 64, of Savannah, G.A. passed away Feb. 8, 2018, at Savannah Hospice. Mr. Dobson was born Jul. 21, 1953, in Varnville, S.C. to the late Harvey A. and Mary Tuten Dobson.

Alvin was the owner of Sand Hill Logging and Timber and was a self- employed timber harvester for 40 years. He loved working in the woods and spending time outdoors, was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed any activity that included automobiles, boating or the river. Beach music and shagging were favorite past times and Alvin was always the “Life of the Party”; he was known and loved by all. Even after leaving Luray to pursue his career, he never lost touch with his home town that was so dear to his heart.

Surviving Mr. Dobson are his wife, Kim Dobson, and one sister, Rose D. Elliott.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, at Luray Christian Church, 90 Fitts Street, Luray, S.C.

ALLENDALE, S.C. - John Stoney Sanders, Jr., age 90, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.
Mr. Sanders was a lifelong native of Allendale and the son of the late John Stoney, and Nina Flowers Sanders, Sr. He was a graduate of the Citadel, U.S. Air Force Veteran and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church. Stoney lived life to its fullest, enjoyed people and will be missed by his family and many friends. Allendale has lost a true icon.
Graveside Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, at Swallow Savannah Cemetery with Reverend George Hudson officiating. The family received friends following the service at the graveside.
Family members include nieces and nephews, special great nieces and nephews: Shannon Ferril (Norman), Leigh Ann Ferrill Garlington (Gene), Andy Wright (Courtney) and Brad Wright (Alicia).
