Betty Crapse Polk

MACON, GA - Betty Crapse Polk, 80, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, February 15, 2016.  A celebration of her life will be held Friday, February 19, 2016 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. John Napoli officiating.  Entombment will be private. The family will greet friends Thursday night from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted or those who wish may make donations to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 501 Bass Rd., Macon, 31210.

Mrs. Polk was born in Estill, South Carolina to the late Elwood and Eunice Bowers Crapse and was preceded in death by her sister, Dale Mole. She was retired as a Secretary for River Edge Behavioral Health. Mrs. Polk was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and was an active Elder. She volunteered with ARC, Special Olympics, and Macon Service League, as well as several other organizations. Mrs. Polk also enjoyed reading and playing Canasta.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Polk; son, Paul Scott Polk; siblings, June Smith, Mary Payne, Jack Crapse, Paul Reeves, John (Peg) Crapse, Ben (Janie) Crapse and Annie Crapse; nieces and nephews, Danny Smith, Jodie (Ken) Carswell, Julie (Tara) Darragh and Polly (Ray) Ellington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cecil “Sweet Pea” Owens

BRUNSON - Mr. Cecil “Sweet Pea” Owens of Hadwin Circle near Brunson, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital.  

Mr. Owens was born in Barnwell County, Feb. 12, 1941 a son of the late Fred Owens Sr. and Ollie Briggs Owens Carroll.  He had retired from Ertel Construction as a Supervisor, and had been a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Barnwell.  He loved being with his buddies at cookouts in the community and was a member of the Hardees Coffee Club.

Surviving are:  His wife: Phyllis Inlan Owens of Brunson; Daughter: Peggy Owens Cohen “Renee” of Columbia; Son: Brian Owens “Rebecca” of Brunson; Sisters: Laura Horner of Barnwell and Betty Hoover of Blackville; and one brother: Louis Owens of Barnwell; Grandchildren: Marci Donehue, Peyton Owens, and Kenzie Owens; and one great granddaughter: Makenna DeLoach. 

Funeral services will be held 1 P.M. Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly, with burial in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery at the Airport.

Polly Anna Smith

FREEPORT, FLA - Mrs. Polly Anna Smith, age 52, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016. She was born February 8, 1964 in Fort Stewart, Georgia to Kellen and Ruth Butler Musser.

Mrs. Smith was a resident of Freeport for the past 26 years. She was a devoted wife. She enjoyed doing crafts, and providing child care for many children. She also enjoyed listening to music.

Mrs. Smith  is survived by her father Kellen Musser of Maryland; her mother Ruth Butler Creswell  of South Carolina; her loving husband of 29 years  Patrick Shane Smith of Freeport; two brothers Tommy Lee Creswell of Augusta, Georgia and Terry Don Creswell and wife Donna of South Carolina; and one sister Terry Lynne Musser of South Carolina.

Jane Marlene DeLoach Lamar

BOCA RATON, FL - Jane Marlene DeLoach Lamar of Boca Raton, FL (formerly of Estill, SC) died on Saturday, February 20, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.  She courageously battled uterine cancer for almost two years. 

     Marlene (named in honor of her dear Aunt Mary and Mother Irene) was born in Estill, SC on April 2, 1937.  She was the daughter of the late George William and Jane Irene Harrison DeLoach.  She was an accomplished Boca Raton realtor with Carlen, Sanctuary, Coldwell Banker and Lenson Realty Companies being recognized as "Outstanding Sales/Realtor of the Year" several times.  She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Boca Raton attending and hosting the Rebekah Circle for many years.  She also loved playing bridge with her lady friends and the couples' bridge groups.

     She graduated from Estill High School as Valedictorian of her class.  She was an Estill Gator cheerleader, chorus member and basketball player.  She graduated from Columbia College, Columbia, SC where she was secretary of her freshman class and president of the sophomore class.  Following graduation, she worked in Columbia for the Social Security Administration and was later transferred to Jacksonville, FL.  It was there that she met Jerry Lamar. They were married in Mt. Carmel United Methodist on March 10, 1962.

     Survivors include:  Jerry Dean Lamar, her dear husband, Jerry Dean Lamar, Jr., her beloved son and his dear wife, Jill McNally Lamar.  Sister:  Linda DeLoach Gillespie (Bill) of Columbia, SC.  Uncle: Ralph (Sam) Holbrook DeLoach, Aunt Cloe (Mickey) Harvey DeLoach of Estill, SC.  Sister Cousins:  MaryAnn Smith Crews (Jerry Frank) Columbia/Hampton, SC, Mary Francis Epps Young (Wes), Aiken, SC.  Nephew:  William Trent Gillespie (Kelley) and their children, Mary Kathryn and William, Columbia, SC.  Niece:  Lindsay Gillespie Hitt (Jeremy), Concord, NC.  Cousins:  John Edgar Eubanks (Marcie) and their children, Jack, Molly, Abbey and Caroline, Oakland, TN;  Ann Louise Eubanks Schmitt (Dave) and their children David and Trinity, St. Louis, MO;  Marion Patterson Lee (John) and son Jack, Greenville, SC; Margaret Patterson Brown (TJ), Richmond Hill, GA.  Anne DeLoach Strickland, Fredericksburg, TX. Sam (Judy) DeLoach, Smith Mountain Lake, VA.  Danny (Deborah) DeLoach, Hollywood, SC; Donna DeLoach, Atlanta, GA.  Sherry DeLoach, High Point, NC.  Sister-in-law:  Thelma Lamar Allen, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  Nieces:  Sandy Allen Ensworth, Atlanta, GA; Linda Lamar, Franklin, TN.  She is also survived by the next generation of nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

     For over twenty years, Marlene had been one of the "Gator Girls", a group founded by Reba Gail (Button) Peeples Wilburn, ten originally, now only six, Estill High Graduates who gather annually at Button's condo in Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms, SC to celebrate their lifelong friendship.  They attended Jill and Dean's wedding in April 2008 and Jerry's 80th Birthday Celebration in May 2015.  Marlene was looking forward to this year's gathering with Button, MaryAnn (her special roommate), Betty Bush, Elaine Long Ling and Nancy Rhodes Hunter.  Mary Beth Ward Kay and Mary Lou Peeples Norman are not able to attend.  Rosemary DeLoach Brisendine and Carrie Jean Ramsay Price were original members, now deceased. 

     Marlene was dearly loved by her family, friends, her church and by all who knew her.  She had a giving heart and always remembered her relatives' and friends' birthdays.  She will be greatly missed.

     A visitation was held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Glick Family Funeral Home, 3600 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL from 5-7 pm.  A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, 300 Mulberry St., Hampton, SC on Thursday, February 25th, 2016 at 11:00 am led by Reverends Dewey Shafer and John Edgar Eubanks, Jr.  Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 7394 Browning Gate Rd., Route 3 on the corner of Route 3 and Mt. Carmel Road just outside of Estill, SC.

Helen Virginia Gooding Youmans

HAMPTON - Mrs. Helen Virginia Gooding Youmans of Shaw Drive in Hampton, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 morning in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

 

Mrs. Youmans was born in the Miley Community of Hampton County, August 18, 1922 a daughter of the late Dowdy Lloyd “Doc” Gooding and Jessie Lee Freeman Gooding.  She had served as Deputy Clerk of Court from 1948 through 1972 and served as Clerk of Court for Hampton County from 1973 through 1992, retiring after 44 years of service.  She was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church, and was the widow of Cary Lee Youmans. 

Surviving is one Daughter: Karen Youmans Couch and husband Neil of Alexandria, Virginia; Grandsons: Jonathan Neil Couch and Christopher Lee Couch; and 2 Great Grandchildren: Caoilainn Anne Couch and Kaylee Lynn Canfield-Couch.

Funeral services were held 3 PM Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 in the Sandy Run Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Paul Reid, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials may be sent to Sandy Run Baptist Church, 2100 Sandy Run Road, Hampton SC 29924.

 

Mary Frances Batten Cone

BLUFFTON - Mary Frances Batten Cone, 96, died peacefully at her home in Bluffton, SC on February 19, 2016 after a brief illness.  She was born on July 23, 1919 in Estill, SC, where she spent most of her life.  She was the daughter of the late Essie Peeples Batten and D. Wise Batten, Sr.

She was a graduate of Draughon’s Business College in Savannah, Ga.  Before her marriage to the late George E. Cone, Jr. she was employed by the Agriculture Adjustment Office in Hampton, SC.  During WWII, she volunteered with the Red Cross as a Gray Lady.

She was an active member of Lawtonville Baptist Church.  She influenced many young women through her extensive work with GA’s and Acteens.  She also taught Sunday School and was a member of Circle Group 1 well into her 90’s.  She was an accomplished floral arranger and the oldest member of the Social Dozen of Estill, a sewing club, as long as her health allowed.  Her hands were never idle as she loved to sew, crochet, knit, as well as engage in many crafts, especially with seashells.  She contributed her handwork to various organizations such as Project Linus, Care Bags Foundation and Warm Up America.  She also knitted caps for sailors in the US Navy, and lap robes for area nursing homes and the elderly.  In Bluffton, she volunteered for the Self Help organization.  During the years she made beautiful clothes for all of her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.  “MaMa”, as she was called by her family, taught us by quiet example that family is everything. 

She is predeceased by her husband of 71 years, George E. Cone, Jr., and her brother D. Wise Batten.  She is survived by her son, George Edward Cone, III (Chris) of Estill, daughter, Frances Esther Sexson (Bob) of Bluffton and five grandchildren; Heather Jane Cone, Mary Christine Grant (Rich), Dorothy Cone Guscio (Will), Mary Esther Sexson Hartley (Dustin) and Scott Edward Sexson (Beth).  She also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Edward Andrew Grant, John Edward Schwedler, Campbell Elizabeth Guscio, Hayden Dustin Hartley, Meredith Catherine Hartley, Beau Edward Sexson, Mary Jane Sexson, and a brother-in-law, Thomas William Cone.  The family would like to express their love and sincere gratitude to her devoted caregiver, Diane Johnson, close family friend Paula Harper Bethea, and Daybreak, Adult Care Service. 

Funeral services were held graveside at Lawtonville Cemetery on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 11 AM led by the Reverend Joseph Hester, Pastor of Lawtonville Baptist Church.  Visitation immediately following the service at the cemetery.  Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton, SC is in charge of arrangements.

Miriam Mixson Smith

VARNVILLE - Mrs. Miriam Mixson Smith, of Edward S. Mixon Road near Varnville, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 at her residence, after an extended illness. 

Mrs. Smith was born in Ridgeland, September 29, 1945 a daughter of the late Marion Hagood Mixson and Evelyn Clark Mixson.  She was a homemaker and loved taking care of her family.  She was a member of the Yemassee Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Husband: Elliott Edward “Ed” Smith Jr. of Varnville; Sons: Brian Smith “Marilee” of Neeses, and Dwayne Smith “April” of Orangeburg; Brother: Ronald Mixson of Varnville; and Three grandchildren: Savannah, Madison, and Hudson Lee Smith.  Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a half brother: Hagood Mixson.

Funeral services were held 2 PM Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly, with burial in the Sand Hill Cemetery.

The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to Agape Hospice, 658 Bells Highway, Walterboro SC 29488.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM at the Chapel in Hampton located at 300 Mulberry Street West.

A longtime public servant and Hampton County Clerk of Court passed away last week at the age of 93.

Helen Virginia Gooding Youmans, of Shaw Drive in Hampton, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Lois Murden Mixson

VARNVILLE - Mrs. Lois Murden Mixson of Pine Street in Varnville died Friday, February 26, 2016 at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Mixson was born in Orangeburg, a daughter of the late Luther and Earthelene Lowry Murden.  She had worked for Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton for many years, but also enjoyed being a homemaker and working in her yard with her late husband, Fred Eldredge Mixson Sr.  She was a member of the Varnville 1st Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a choir member.

Surviving are: Daughters: Carol Dory “Dennis” of Lake City, Florida and Eileen Tatum of Ellabell, Georgia; Son: Fred E. “Freddie” Mixson Jr. “Lisa” of Hampton; and one brother: Raymond Murden “Marci” of Bluffton.  There are 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  Mrs. Mixson was predeceased by her husband Fred, and a son-in-law Frank Tatum.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 29, 2016 in the Varnville 1st Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly, with burial in the Varnville Cemetery.

Gale Rhodes Dreher

ESTILLA graveside service for Gale Rhodes Dreher, 75, was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Lawtonville Cemetery.

    Ms. Dreher was born January 26, 1941 in Estill, SC and passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Jeter E. and Lucille Gallman Rhodes. She was a School Teacher retiring after 30 years from the Estill School District. An accomplished Musician, she sang with the Hampton County Choral Society and was the Organist of The Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church where she was a faithful member. An avid reader as well as an accomplished bridge player, she was a member of several bridge clubs. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching sports especially basketball and football. Gale was a loving mother, grandmother and friend.

     She is survived by, her daughters, Renee (Mark) Reich of Columbia, Davia (Matthew) De Sanctis of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren, Giuls and Everett; sister, Nancy (Jim) Hunter of Greenville; brother, Father Joe (Tina) Rhodes of Sumter and numerous nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by a sister, Kay Rhodes Wiggins and a brother, Jeter Rhodes.

Thomas R. Orr, Jr.

PINELAND - Funeral services for Thomas R. Orr, Jr. were held with full military rites, 11 am, Saturday, March 5, 2016, Second Thankful Baptist Church, Pineland, SC with burial in the Second Thankful Baptist Church Cemetery, Pineland, SC.

God gave Thomas R. Orr Jr., to Thomas, Sr. and Rose Lee Singleton Orr, on October 21, 1955, in Elizabeth, NJ. God sent his angels to Pineland, South Carolina on Sunday, February 28, 2016 to claim his very own.  Thomas received his formal education in Elizabeth, NJ public schools.  He graduated in 1973 from Thomas Jefferson High School, Elizabeth, NJ.  Thomas was a standout middle linebacker for the Thomas Jefferson Minutemen.  After high school, Thomas joined the United States Marine Corps.  As a young man, he was a Class A Chemical Operator for GAF Inc., Linden, NJ; as well as, other local chemical companies.  He also worked for Brantley Brothers Moving Company in Newark, NJ. In his early years, Thomas was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Elizabeth, NJ.

In December 1973, Thomas married his high school sweetheart, Josephine Peterson. From that union their oldest son Thomas III was born. Several years later, he met, and fell in love with Doreen White. Through that courtship, their son Rashon Orr was born.   In 1986, Thomas and Yvonne Washington were married. They had three children: Shanique Washington, Shikiya Washington Martin, and Raheem L Orr.

In the early 2000s, Thomas retired to Pineland, SC, where he was a member of Second Thankful Missionary Baptist Church.

Thomas is predeceased by his brother; Johnnie Orr Sr., daughter; Shanique Washington, and former wife, Yvonne "Squeaky" Orr.

Thomas leaves to cherish his memory, his parents; Thomas Orr, Sr. and Rose Lee Orr;  Children; Thomas III (Keisha) Orr, Rashon (Shonya) Orr, Raheem (Mylarah) Orr, and     Shikiya (Lamar) Washington Martin;  Grandchildren, Moyer, Dominique, Nasyah,Bayani., Dasia, Genee, David , DeAndre, Amber, Raheem Jr., Ava, Amaiyah, Orryo, and Janae; Siblings, Florence Orr, Girard Orr, Eric Orr and Vanessa Orr; First wife, Josephine and a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and other friends.

John Edward “Eddie” Cook, Sr.

VARNVILLE - Mr. John Edward “Eddie” Cook, Sr. of 202 Rainbow Bend Road near Varnville, died early Friday, March 4, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Cook was born in Hampton County, August 17, 1952 a son of the late Joseph Frank Cook Sr. and Betty Brunson Cook.  He was a diesel mechanic and a long distance truck driver.  He was married to the late Roberta Brown Cook.

Surviving are: Two sons: John Cook and wife Amber of Varnville, and Joseph Cook of Varnville; Daughter: Dianne C. Godwin and husband Garn of Aquasca, Maryland; Brothers: Frank Cook Jr. of Estill, Gene Cook of Hampton, Harrison Cook of Mississippi, and Doug Cook of the Great Swamp community; and Sister: Linda Smith of Ridgeland.  There are 4 grandchildren.

 

Graveside services will be 3 PM Sunday in the Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

Raymond Meredith Unser

CARTERSVILLE, GA - Raymond Meredith Unser of Cartersville, GA passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, February 13, 2016. A service to celebrate his life was held on February 22 at 1 pm at the Georgia National Cemetery near Canton, GA. The family will receive friends at the Collins Funeral Home in Acworth, Ga. prior to the service, beginning at 10:30am.

Ray was born in Norfolk, VA and graduated from Portlock High School in June of 1939. He went on to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA to get his Mechanical Engineering degree and graduated in December of 1943. He worked for Westinghouse Electric as a graduate student but then enlisted in the Navy in March 1944. He served in the Navy on the USS Clarke Count/ LST- 601 during most of World War II in the Mediterranean unloading aviation gas and supplies for the US Air Force in Italy and also the British Air Force off the coast of Greece. They also helped in moving Fifth Army troops to Marseille, France.

After the war, Ray married Hazel Shackelford who he had dated while attending Virginia Tech. They wed on August of 1946 and Ray resumed his career with Westinghouse Electric in Pittsburgh. They moved to Hampton, SC in the early 1950’s and became active in the community through their Clothes Closet Ministry with the First Baptist Church of Hampton. Ray was also a member of the Evergreen Lodge #153 in Hampton and enjoyed his time with friends in their community and attending their children’s various sports activities. Ray and Hazel later moved to Acworth, GA in October of 2005 so they could be closer to their children and enjoy time with their family.

Ray is survived by his son, Robert F. “Bob” and Teresa Unser of Cartersville, his daughter Jody U. and Jerry Fisher of Roswell, GA and his sister Thelma and Ame’ Amerson of Virginia Beach, VA. The family has requested that any memorials that may be made in Ray’s honor be directed to the Clothes Closet at the First Baptist Church of Hampton, 305 Oak Street, Hampton, SC 29924.

James Steven “Stevie” Hill

EARLY BRANCH - Mr. James Steven “Stevie” Hill of Cat Branch Road near Early Branch, died Sunday, March 13, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Hill was born in Colleton County, a son of the late Otis and Mary Ginn Hill.  He was a retired painter, enjoyed fishing and playing pool.  He was a member of the Grays Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are: His wife: Betty Rhoden Hill of Early Branch; Son: Kevin Ashley Hill “Tanya” of Walterboro; Daughter: Katina Lauren Jones of Mt. Pleasant; Step Son: Otis Rhoden Jr. of Grays; and Sister: Shelly Roberts of Sniders.  There are 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  Mr. Hill was predeceased by a Step Daughter: JoAnn Simmons. 

Graveside services were held 3 PM Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in the Davis Family Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

Lucas Poston

HAMPTON - Mr. Lucas Poston of Mulberry Street West, in Hampton, died Friday, March 11, 2016 in Roper Hospital in Charleston.   

Mr. Poston was born in Florence County, a son of the late Luther and Inez Powell Poston.  He had retired from Sprint Telephone Company as an Area Manager after 37 years of service.  He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Hampton Fire Department for 31 years, retiring as Captain.  He was a member of the Hampton First Baptist Church where he was active with many church ministries and was a Deacon.   

Surviving are: His wife: Patricia Ann Davis Poston of Hampton;  Sons:  David Lucas Poston “Lori” of Yemassee, and Robert Anderson “Robbie” Poston “Mary Beth” of Estill;  Daughters:  Carol Ann Poston Pitman of Hampton, Laura Poston Eaddy of Charleston, and Brana Poston Freeman “Gary” of Hampton;  Brothers:  James and Eugene Poston of Johnsonville.  There are 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Monday in the Hampton First Baptist Church, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. 

Visitation was Sunday from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton, and Monday until 1 P.M. when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.  The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the Hampton First Baptist Church, 305 Oak Street, East, Hampton, S.C. 29924.

Adrene Rivers Johnson Chassereau

HAMPTON - Mrs. Adrene Rivers Johnson Chassereau of Bamberg Highway near Hampton died Thursday, March 10, 2016 in the Lowcountry Assisted Living Facility in Ehrhardt. 

Mrs. Chassereau was born in Hampton County, a daughter of the late F. D. Johnson and Inez Rivers Johnson.  She began her career working in the family business, J. H. Rivers and Sons in Hampton, and later worked for Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store for 46 years, where she was the head cashier and bookkeeper.  She was a member of the Hampton 1st Baptist Church where she was very active with her Sunday School Class, the Hospitality Committee and the Clothes Closet Ministry.  She dearly loved her God, family, church, friends and her special pets.

Surviving are: Her husband: Carl Wyman Chassereau of Hampton; Son: Ron Chassereau “Janet” of Hampton; Nephews/Brothers: George W. Godley Jr. “Caroll” of Beaufort, NC, James F. Godley “Doris” and Johnson Godley “Susan” all of Hampton; Grandchildren: Rhonda C. Jones “Josh” of Lodge, Blake D. Chassereau of Hampton; and Great Grandchildren: Peighton and Easton Jones, as well as, a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 3 PM Sunday, March 13, 2016 in the Hampton 1st Baptist Church, with burial in the Johnson-St. Paul Cemetery in Hampton, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

Daisy Mae Cook

ISLANDTON - Miss Daisy Mae Cook of Moselle Road near Islandton, died Thursday, March 10, 2016 in the Colleton Medical Center.

Miss Cook was born in Colleton County, a daughter of the late Daniel Walter and Dessie Sullivan Cook.  She had retired from Devan Manufacturing Company in Allendale after 40 years of service, and attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Moselle. 

Surviving are: Two brothers: Ed Ray Cook of Islandton and Roy Henry Cook of Dorchester; Two sisters: Urell Stone of Islandton and Fay Bouknight of Irmo; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 3 PM Sunday, March 13, 2016 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Michael Polk, with burial in the Carter’s Ford Baptist Church Cemetery in Lodge.

EARLY BRANCH - Mr. Thomas Wilkins Nations, Jr., 71, of Early Branch, entered into rest Thursday, March 10, 2016 at his residence.

Funeral services were held 2 pm, Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort.

 

Born June 9, 1944 in Greenville, he was a son of the late Thomas Wilkins Nations, Sr. and Annie Lee Smith Nations.  He served his country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps, having been in Vietnam.  He retired as a Supervisor in the spinning room from JP Stevens.  He was a member of Spirit of Life Ministries and loved hunting, fishing and especially taking care of his dog, Kane.

Surviving are: his wife, Barbara Ann Thames Nations of Early Branch; children, Crystal Nations of Greenville, Thomas Scott Nations of Greenville, and Theresa Stephens of Dorchester; sisters, Carolyn Marla of Greenville and Margaret Parler of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Marla and Gail Rice.

Patricia “Patsy” Harvey Polk

BRUNSON, SC – Patricia “Patsy” Harvey Polk, age 85, of Brunson, SC passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016 at the John E. Harter Nursing Home in Fairfax, SC.  She was born February 20, 1931 to the late Charles Fred Harvey, Jr. and Virginia Williams Harvey. In addition to her parents, Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel “Dan” Eugene Polk, and sister, Harriette Harvey Ray.

Patsy was born and grew up on her maternal grandparents’ farm, “The Country,” in Hampton County, SC and graduated from Brunson High School. She graduated from Winthrop College in May 1951 with a BS in Education.  She taught first grade in the Columbia, SC city schools before marrying Dan. Patsy had a lovely voice and frequently sang with Dan, their children, and extended family.  After the family settled in Charlotte, she went to work for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as an elementary school Media Specialist.  In 25 years with CMS, Patsy shared her love of reading with thousands of children in addition to her own.

Patsy is survived by her children, Daniel “Chuck” Polk and wife Debbie of Matthews, NC, Robin Polk Williams and husband Steve of Gibsonia, PA, Laurie Polk Schwartz and husband Russell of Charlotte, NC, Brett Polk and wife Laura of Asheville, NC, and Susan Polk Sparks and husband Greg of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Jason Polk, Leslie Polk Yankosky, Sarah Polk Herum, Elise Williams, Emily Williams, Ralph Polk, Ann Polk, and Forrest Polk; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Nicholas Lutheran Church, 235 St. Nicholas Church Road, Fairfax, SC, The Reverend Marty Matthis officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at “The Country” following the service.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staffs of J&T Residential Care and John E. Harter Nursing Home for their many years of exceptional and loving care for Patsy.

Lloyd Benjamin Freeman, Sr.

HAMPTON - Mr. Lloyd Benjamin Freeman Sr. of Hampton died Saturday, March 19, 2016 in the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro.

Mr. Freeman was born in Hampton County, a son of Ruby Crews Freeman and the late James Earl Freeman.  He had worked with CSX Railroad, and retired from the family NAPA Parts Store in Hampton.  He served in the National Guard, was a member of the Varnville 1st Baptist Church, and was active in the activities at the Veterans Victory House where he was President of the Residents Committee.  He was a 1963 Graduate of Wade Hampton High School and a star football player. 

 Surviving besides his mother of  Hampton are: His wife: Doris Oquinn Freeman of Hampton; Sons: Lloyd Freeman Jr. “Sabrina” of Graniteville, and Shane Freeman of Macon, Georgia; Daughter: Shari F. Manders “David” of Beech Island; Step Children: George H. Cooler Sr. “Ruby” of Early Branch, Harvey Carroll Cooler “Winnie” of Early Branch, Catherine C. Slowik “Edward” of Ridgeland, and Cecil L. Humbert “Holly” of Ridgeland; Brother: Earl Freeman Jr. “Linda” of Hampton.  There are 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and a number of step grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held 4 PM Monday, March 21, 2016 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly, with burial in the Rivers Cemetery.

Kenneth (Ken) Neal Sanders

SAVANNAH, GA - Kenneth (Ken) Neal Sanders died peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on March 19, 2016, after an extended illness.

Ken was born in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to Burley Paul and Atha (Odom) Sanders on June 27, 1946, and moved at the age of 18 months to Varnville. He graduated from Estill High School in 1965 and attended North Greenville Junior College (now University) where he majored in piano and organ. While a student there, Ken was the organist at First Baptist Church in Woodruff, South Carolina. He continued his studies in organ performance and church music at the University of Georgia and also served as organist at First Baptist Church of Elberton and organist/choir master at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Perry.

In 1969, Ken began working for Southern Bell Telephone, from which he retired in 2000 in Savannah. He remained busy in retirement, working as a service tech for the Oreck Clean Home Store and organist at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. He retired from St. Andrew’s in 2016. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists.

Ken was preceded in death by his partner of thirty years, J. Randall Bacon; his parents; a sister, Ruth S. Jones and a brother, Burley Paul Sanders, Jr. He is survived by his partner John Johnson; a brother, Steve Sanders (Winn) of Estill, South Carolina, numerous nieces and nephews, several grand-nieces and one grand-nephew. 

Service with full Eucharist was held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 608 Hampton St., Savannah, Georgia, on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with graveside burial to follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Harry Eugene Clifton

HAMPTON - Mr. Harry Eugene Clifton, Jr., affectionately known as “Bubba”, 46, of Hampton, passed away Friday, March 18, 2016 at his residence.

Funeral services were held 3 pm, Sunday, March 20, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. 

Born December 1, 1969 in Hampton and was a son of Harry Eugene Clifton, Sr. and the late Harriett Searson Brunson.  He was a former construction worker.  He was a die-hard South Carolina Gamecocks and Denver Broncos fan.  Bubba enjoyed spending time at the river and loved crabbing.  Anyone who knew him, loved him.  He will always be remembered for the love he had for everyone, his big heart and beautiful smile.

Lenora McJolly

BROOKLYN, NY - Lenora McJolly was born March 18, 1946, in Hampton, South Carolina to the late Frankie Lee, Sr. and Estill Rivers. She was the eldest of her brothers and sisters; the late Isabella Crittington (Rivers), Erma Williams (Rivers) and the late Frankie Lee, Jr.

Lenora moved to Brooklyn, NY at the age of 18 after graduating from North District Training High School in Varnville, South Carolina. She married David McJolly, Jr. and they had three children: Cherie Lenora McJolly, David McJolly, III and Jasmin Mar’tel McJolly (Dix). Lenora worked for the New York Department of Housing and Urban Development for over 30 years. Upon retiring, she became a “professional traveler” visiting places such as Las Vegas, Alaska and Jerusalem. Lenora was lovingly called by many names including Mama Mac, Mama Lee, and Laudy, but the one name that everyone would use to describe her was a “Lady.” Lenora lived a life full of love and sacrifice. She was a true testament of the selflessness of Jesus Christ and one of the most giving people you will ever meet.

She was a member of The Church of the Open Door for over ten years, and upon residing in Powder Springs, GA became a member of Renewing of the Mind Worship and Training Center.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Cherie, David and Jasmin, sister Erma Williams (Rivers), daughter-in-law Deborah McJolly, son-in-law Kwame Dix, five grandchildren: Nicholas, David IV, Amare, Elijah and Kai, a special son Elijah Braddy, and special daughters Julissa Guevara and Yolanda Johnson, as well as two honorary grandchildren Juwan and Schuyler. She will be missed dearly by her longtime friends, Katherine Williams and Pattie Slaton; her in laws, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of extended family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her and is now permanently residing with her heavenly father.

The funeral was held on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at The Church of the Open Door, 201 Gold Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201, Rev. Dr. Mark V.C. Taylor, Pastor.

 

Arnold Lavon Dobson

HAMPTON - On Tuesday, March 22, 2016, in Kissimmee, Florida, Mr. Arnold Lavon Dobson was called from earthy toils to reward. Born December 3, 1959 in Hampton, South Carolina, he was son of Mrs. Martha Dobson and the late Pastor Evans Dobson.

At an early age, Arnold became a baptized member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina. He was a 1977 graduate of Wade Hampton High School, Varnville, South Carolina. Upon graduation, Arnold enlisted in the United States Marine, serving his country honorably. He was discharged from active duty May, 1987.

Arnold, for many years, was formerly employed by the Department of Corrections facilities located, Allendale and Columbia, South Carolina. Most recently, he was employed as a truck driver for GAF Building Materials, Inc. of Statesboro, Georgia.

He had an avid joy for motorcycle riding as well as playing and watching sports of all sorts.

Preceding him in death was his father, Pastor Evans Dobson.

To mourn his departure are: His son, Andre Lavon Dobson of Hampton, South Carolina; His grandson, D’Andre Capers-Dobson of Summerville, South Carolina; His mother, Ms. Martha Dobson of Hampton, South Carolina; (2) Sisters: Toreacher Dobson of Hampton, South Carolina and Connie D. Nwabude of Atlanta, Georgia; (1) Brother, Pastor Lee E. (Vanessa) Dobson of Montverde, Florida; A close cousin, Timothy Capers of Madison, Alabama; (3) Aunts: Mrs. Corine (Earl) Capers of Varnville, South Carolina, Ms. Alene Fair of Robertsville, South Carolina, and Ms. Dorothy Clark of St. Petersburg, Florida; (1) Uncle, Mr. Andrew Jenkins of Tampa, Florida; (6) Nieces; (5) Nephews; Other relatives and caring friends, which includes a special friend, Marcella Brown of Hampton, South Carolina.

Funeral services were held 12 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016 at New Hope Baptist Church, Varnville.  Burial with full Military Honors was held in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Leona Smith DeLoach

FURMAN - Mrs. Leona Smith DeLoach of Stafford Road, Furman, went to be with her Heavenly Father whom she loved and served throughout her long life, Easter Sunday March 27, 2016.

Mrs. DeLoach was born July 1, 1926, in Effingham County, Georgia.  She was married to the late Pringle Edwin DeLoach for sixty-four and one-half years. 

She was the daughter of the late George Leroy Smith and Nellie Morgan Smith.  She is survived by a son, R. Wayne DeLoach, of the home; two sisters, Helen S. Usher, Shawnee Georgia and Geri Mallard, Savannah, Georgia, and a number of nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a brother, George Edward Smith and a sister, Laura S. Caffo.

She was a devoted and committed member of Steep Bottom Baptist Church and the oldest member.  She centered her life around her church and was always willing to serve.  She served as a former Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and worker, was an active member of the Woman’s Missionary Union, and served on various committees over the years.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lillie Chapter # 27 for 44 years.  She served as Worthy Matron from 1997-1998 and 2000-2002. 

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 2 PM in the Hampton Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Albert Tuten and Rev. Paul Creason.  Burial was in the Stafford Cemetery near Furman.

Brenda Brown

PINELAND - Funeral service for Brenda Brown  of Pineland, SC  was held  12 noon, Wednesday, March 23th, Second Thankful Baptist Church, Pineland, South Carolina  with burial in in the First Pine Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery, Pineland, SC.

Brenda Lorraine Warren-Brown was the sixth child born to Mr. Eddie and Evelyn (Bolden) Warren, on November 16, 1962 in Jasper County, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Eddie Warren, Jr.

At an early age, she joined First Pine Savannah Baptist Church. For the past ten years, Brenda has been an active member of Praise Tabernacle Full Gospel Church, Scotia, SC under the leadership of Apostle Melvin L. Badger. She served as an usher, until her health began to fail.

Brenda was the proud mother of (4) children: Ernest (Octavious) Warren, Greenville, NC, Antonio and Sadasha Warren of the home. On July 26, 1997, Brenda was happily wedded to Marion Brown. To this union, (1) child was born, Dineshia Brown.

In addition to her accomplishments, she was a high school graduate of Ridgeland High School, Class of 1982. Brenda has held numerous jobs; however, her last two places of employment were the former Gator’s Restaurant, Estill, SC and Waffle House, Point South, SC.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Elder Marion Brown; her four children; Three sisters, Beulah Jones, Jacksonville, FL, Mary (Chester) Newsome, Greenville, NC, Thomasina (Johnnie) Gordon, Varnville, SC; One brother, Freddie (Mary) Warren, Pineland, SC; One sister-in-law, Hattie Warren, Estill, SC; One aunt, Lillie Rose (Joseph) Bowman; One uncle, John H. Marjorie Bennett

HAMPTON - Mrs. Marjorie Bennett, of Jackson Avenue in Hampton, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in Roper Hospital in Charleston. 

Mrs. Bennett was born in Beaufort, a daughter of Mary Lou Mosley Bennett and the late Percy Tyson Bennett.  She was the owner and operator of Marjorie’s Cards & Gifts in Hampton, and a former Miss Hampton.  Mrs. Bennett cherished her granddaughters, loved beach music and the beach, especially blue crabs.  She was a devoted wife for 47 years and a loving mom.

Surviving besides her Mother of Hampton are: Sons: William Tyson Bennett and wife Lauren of Waxhaw, NC, and Timothy Cape Bennett and wife Michele of Iron Station, NC; Daughter-in-law: Cynthia Bennett of Easley; and Grandchildren: Brittany, Katelynn, Savannah, Gracie, Emily, Mary Caroline, and Sarah.  She was predeceased by: Husband: William “Bill” Bennett, Father: Percy Tyson Bennett, and Son: Anthony Lee Bennett.

Pearl Jones Barnes

FAIRFAX - Mrs. “Mamie” Pearl Jones Barnes, of Fairfax, died Sunday, March 20, 2016 at her residence, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Barnes, a daughter of the late Rev. Theron Earl Jones and Mamie Putman Jones.  She and her late husband, William Forrest Barnes Jr., owned and operated Arrowhead Plantation and Nursery near Fairfax.  She was a member of the Fairfax First Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Two step daughters: Charlotte Victoria Barnes of Columbia, and Ann Barnes Wilson and husband Harry Wilson of Lexington; Grandchildren: Victoria W. Boyce and husband Dr. Kyle Boyce, and Ann Forrest W. Bowers and husband Wyman Bowers.  There are 6 great grandchildren.  Also one sister: Virginia Jones Coon.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 22, 2016, in the Fairfax Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.   

The family is grateful for the loyal care given by Moses Cohen and a host of caregivers.

Velma Louise King Hadwin

YEMASSEE - Mrs. Velma Louise King Hadwin of Yemassee, died Saturday, April 9, 2016 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness. 

Mrs. Hadwin was born in Warsaw, Georgia a daughter of the late Johnny and Miranda Middleton King.  She was an excellent seamstress, loved cooking for her family, and along with her husband was active with the Jahab Shrine Club.  She was a member of the Moselle Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are: Sons: Gene Prevatt and wife Sandi of Franklin, Tennessee, Marvin Hadwin of Yemassee, and Michael Hadwin and wife Crystal of Yemassee; Daughters: Rindy Brunson and husband Jimmy of Brunswick, Georgia, Betty Rush and husband Dan of Varnville, Donna Rawls and husband Eddie of Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, and Salina Hawkins and husband Steve of Yemassee; and Sister: Mary Ruth Phillips of Washington, Georgia.  There are 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.  Mrs. Hadwin was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Ray Hadwin, and son, Johnny Hadwin.

Graveside services were held 2 PM Wednesday, April 13, 2016  in the Sand Hill Cemetery near Varnville, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

Hazel Alice Crews Mole

VARNVILLE - Mrs. Hazel Alice Crews Mole, of Whispering Pines Lane near Varnville, died Thursday, April 7, 2016 in the Savannah Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. 

Mrs. Mole was born in Hampton County, January 25, 1946 a daughter of the late Benjamin and Alice Peeples Crews.  She retired from the Postal Service after 20 years of service, and was a member of Deep Branch Baptist Church, where she was active in many of the church organizations.  She dearly loved her family, especially her grandchildren. 

Surviving are: Husband: Harold Ernest Mole of Varnville; Son: Ricky Mole and wife April of Early Branch; Sister: Audrey Mosley of Hampton; Sister in law: Marjorie Crews of Varnville; Grandchildren: Jordy and wife Rachel, Briley and Jase; and Great Granddaughter: Elise.  There are a number of nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Mole was predeceased by a son: Randy Ernest Mole; and Brothers: Robert, Billy and Denver Crews.

Cecil Allen Gooding

HAMPTON - Cecil Allen Gooding, 93, of Hampton, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Hospice Hospital in Mt. Pleasant.

Cecil returned to his home after retiring as maintenance supervisor for the city of Dallas, Texas.  Cecil was born September 4, 1922 a son of the late James Murphy and Mildred Thomas Gooding.  He was reared by his grandparents James J. and Julia Belger Gooding, after the death of his mother at an early age. 

Cecil is survived by his son Cecil Gooding Jr (Jan) of Meggett, sisters Delores Beach of Varnville and Louise Schultz of Cayce, close friends, neighbor, and caretakers Elender and Hoyt Mole, and his beloved dog Willie.  He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by a brother James Gooding, a son Jerry Gooding, and his former wife Carolyn Jumper. 

Memorial services were held Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Gooding Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Paul Reid.  A reception was held afterwards at Sandy Run Social Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sandy Run Church, 2100 Sandy Run Road, Hampton SC 29924.

Carrie “Earlee” Buckner Rice

VARNVILLE - On Tuesday, March 29, 2016, Carrie “Earlee” Buckner Rice was called from labor to reward at Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, South Carolina. She was born on January 15, 1924 in Islandton, SC, as one of 17 children to the late Mr. Herbert and Mrs. Viola Buckner.

Mother Earlee, at a young age, joined Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina. She served in several capacities to include: a member of the Missionary Board, Church Clerk, member of the Senior Choir, and the Mother of the Church.

The joys of her life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Glad Tidings Chapter #48, Order of Eastern Star, Varnville, South Carolina.

Mother Earlee was married to the late George Rice. The Lord blessed their union with 5 children. She was the last aunt for several nieces and nephews, and a mother to many.

Sixteen siblings preceded her in death.

To cherish her memories are her (5) Children: Clarence (Janice) Rice, Varnville, South Carolina, Clara (Deacon Allen) Williams, Early Branch, South Carolina, Verlinda (Jerome) Mosley, Smoaks, South Carolina, Richard (Pandrea) Wrice, Varnville, South Carolina, and Quintone (Marilyn) Rice, Walterboro, South Carolina. From the union of their children were born: (13) Grandchildren, (9) Great-Grandchildren and (2) Great-Great Grandchildren. (5) Sisters-in-law; A host of beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and loving friends. A special thanks to her nephew Ronald Buckner and Caregiver, Mrs. Betty Elliott.

Funeral services were held 12 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the Frampton Cemetery in Varnville.

Margaret Mixson

HAMPTON - Mrs. Margaret Mixson, 83, of Bamberg Highway, Hampton, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 15, 2016 at her residence.  She was the widow of the late Eli Mixson, Jr., to whom she was married for 60 years.

Funeral services were held 3 pm, Sunday, April 17, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.  Pastor Don Davis officiated.  Interment followed in Sand Hill Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Ben Rushing, Doug Mixson, Jr., David Mixon, Matthew Mixon, Walter Yeisley, Jr., Daniel Yeisley, Greg Mixson, Jr. and Larry Barnes.

Born November 6, 1932 in Varnville, she was a daughter of the late Wyman and Alma Ulmer Mixson.  She was a housewife and attended Grace Baptist Church.  Mrs. Mixson was a woman who loved the Lord, her family and friends.  She will be remembered as a devoted wife, momma, MaMa and friend.

Surviving are: her children, Joan Rushing (Gene) of Estill, Harrison Mixson (Lynn) of Fairfax, Douglas Mixson (Ruth) of Ashton, Janet Mixon (William) of Grays, Karen Yeisley (Walter) of Grays, Gregory Mixson (Jessica) of Hampton, and Kent Mixson (Gale) of Tennessee; and sisters, Rita Bridges of Hampton, Betty Heape (James) of Varnville, and Annie Lou Mixson of Sheldon.  She had 17 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

HAMPTON - Mrs. Josie Lee Gordon Isham was born in Hampton, SC on January 27, 1948 to Ella Mae Gray Gordon and the late Leroy Gordon. Her Father and Savior called her from her earthly home to Heavenly rest on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Josie graduated from Estill Training School in 1968. At an early age, she became a member of Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church of Christ Inc., where she served faithfully in many capacities. Josie was joined in Holy matrimony to the late John Wesley Isham, Jr. To this union two children were born; Val and Wesley Isham. She was a very hard working individual, devoted mother, and grandmother.

Pearl Nettles Kinard

WALTERBORO - Mrs. Pearl Nettles Kinard, 89, of Walterboro passed away peacefully at her residence Wednesday, March 30.  Born in Colleton County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Emma Lyons Nettles.

Mrs. Kinard was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church #1. She was married to the late James Mitchell Kinard for 51 years.

Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Kenneth McCaskill officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery with scripture and prayer offered by Reverend Ralph Warren.

Surviving are her son, Mitchell Lamonte Kinard and his wife Connie of Walterboro, daughter, Melanie Kinard Ferguson and her husband Frampton of Furman and Edisto Island, 4 grandchildren, KiKi Kinard Swan of Edisto Island, Shannon Lamonte Kinard of Utah, William Brice (Bud) Herndon, Jr. of Walterboro, and Scarlett Leigh Rizer, also of Walterboro, 3 great grandchildren, Myles Keller, Mariah Swan, and Kelsey Olivia Rizer, and a sister-in-law, Bette L. Nettles of Beaufort.

Rebecca Bowers Hunt

GARNETT - Mrs. Rebecca Bowers Hunt of Old Orangeburg Road in Garnett, died Sunday, April 24, 2016 at her residence.

Mrs. Hunt was born in Scotia, a daughter of the late Mac and Maude Ginn Bowers.  She worked with Ernst and Young in Jacksonville as an Accountant, and later served as Executive Vice President of Work Source in Orange Park, Florida, where she retired.  She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1962 and was a member of the Robertville Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Son Jeffery Louis Hunt and wife Amy of Garnett, and two grandchildren Bo and Will Hunt.  She was predeceased by a brother Donald Bowers and two sisters, Carolyn B. Sawyer and Marian Elaine Bowers.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Saturday, April 30, 2016 in the Robertville Baptist Church, with burial in the Nixville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Catherine Williams 

HARTSVILLE - Graveside services for Mary Catherine Williams, age 96, who passed away April 23 at the home of her daughter in Hartsville, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, S.C. directed by Norton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside and later at Mrs. Williams residence 3139 Hopewell Road, Brunson, S.C.

Mrs. Williams was born June 9, 1919 in Hampton County, a daughter of the late William Jessie & Birdie Causey Youmans and was the widow of C. Woodrow “Woody” Williams. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Estill United Methodist Church, a member of the Joy Group at Hopewell Baptist Church and received a 50 year membership Pin from the Order of the Eastern Star, Crocketville Chapter OES 240.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann (Johnie) Graham, Hartsville, S.C.; two grandsons, Darrin (Sherrie) Hayes, Hartsville, S.C. and Vic (Ann) Hayes, Chester, S.C.; three great grandchildren, Lt. Lee Hayes, US Navy, Jacksonville, Florida, Rynn and Victoria Hayes, Chester, S.C.; one sister, Jean Virgo, Fairfax, S.C. She was preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Manuel and two brothers, Causey Youmans and W.J. “Red” Youmans.

Oscar Lee Crosby

GOOSE CREEK - Oscar Lee Crosby, 82, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, husband of Rosa Griffon Crosby entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Oscar was born June 20, 1933 in Varnville, South Carolina, son of the late J. T. Crosby and the late Willie Pearl Strickland Crosby. He was formerly employed at Mead Westvaco and owned Crosby Construction Company. He was a member of Nazarene Church in Moncks Corner. Oscar was an avid sportsman and fisherman. 
In addition to his spouse, he is also survived by his children: Janice Martin (David) of Hinesville, GA, Oscar L. Crosby, Jr. (Debora) of Louisville, KY; Carla Ford of Midway, GA, Karen Crews (James) of Riceboro, GA; two step-daughters, Leona Mixson (Larry) of Columbia, SC and Sandy Mims (Robert) of Summerville, SC; step-son, Jaime Griffon of Winnsboro, SC; former spouse, Virginia Crosby of Richmond Hill, SC; three brothers, J.T. Crosby, Jr. (Jean) of Goose Creek, SC; Clyde Crosby of Summerville, SC; David Crosby (Gail) of Cross, SC; five sisters: Patricia Walker (Glenn) of Crockett, TX; Margie Crosby of Hanahan, SC; Myrtis White (George), Geneva Welch (Michael), Ollie Fowler, all of Beaufort, SC; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Charles Henry Gooding, Sr.

RUFFIN – Mr. Charles Henry Gooding, Sr., affectionately known by many as “C.H.”, age 82, entered into eternal rest Thursday morning, April 21, 2016, at his home near Bells Cross Roads in Ruffin.

Funeral services were conducted 11:30 Saturday morning, April 23, 2016, from Bethel United Methodist Church - Ruffin Charge, 16147 Lowcountry Highway, Ruffin.  The Reverend Cheri Yates and The Reverend Aron Winn officiating.  Interment followed in the churchyard.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Bethel United Methodist Church, care of Carolyn Breland, 573 Spencer Drive, Ruffin, South Carolina 29475.

Born October 9, 1933, a lifelong resident of Ruffin, he was a son of the late Richard Cleveland Gooding and the late Ruth Taylor Gooding.   The founding owner of C.H. Gooding Landscaping, he was a well-known fixture throughout Colleton County for his strong work ethics and devotion to his trade.  He loved farming as well and devoted a great deal of his time to cultivating and nurturing his crops.  He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church – Ruffin Charge and was a Master Mason holding his sixty year membership at Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236 – Ancient Free Masons.  He will always be remembered for the love he possessed for his family always providing the very best he could for those he loved and centering his life around their wants; as well as for his dry wit and comical sense of humor. 

Surviving are: his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Mrs. Joyce G. Gooding; a daughter, Teresa Gooding DeLoach and her husband Stephen of Hampton; a son, Charles Henry Gooding, Jr. and his wife Laura of Melbourne Beach, Florida; and four grandchildren, Matthew DeLoach and his wife Lauren of New Braunfels, Texas, Justin DeLoach of the home, Emily Gooding and Henry Gooding both of Walterboro.   He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ruth Gooding Smith and Eunice Gooding Ulmer.

Matthew Glynn “Matt” James

VARMVILLE - Mr. Matthew Glynn “Matt” James, of Ram Horn Road near Varnville, died Saturday, April 23, 2016 at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. James was born in Lyons, Ga, a son of Wilson Heape James and the late Jesse Pierce James.  He stayed close to his family members, especially his mother, and attended Huggin Oak Church of God where he served as a Door Greeter and Usher.

Surviving besides his mother are: Brothers: Richard James of Columbia and Jerry James of Varnville; Sister: Kathy Nimmons of Varnville; Special Aunts: Mary Ann Heape of Varnville and Hattie Mae James of Lyons, Ga, and a Special Uncle: Gilbert Heape of Varnville.  There are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2016  in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Dwayne Strickland, with burial in the Heape Family Cemetery.

George Daniel (Danny) Tuten

ESTILL - Rev. George Daniel (Danny) Tuten, of 165 Appleby Ave., Estill, SC died Monday, May 2, 2016 at his residence after an extended illness. 

Rev. Tuten was born in the Furman community of Hampton County, a son of the late Redden and Virie C. Crosby Tuten, Sr.  He began preaching at 17 years old filling in at churches in the community and later called as interim of Robertville Baptist Church.  He was the current pastor at Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Early Branch.  He worked in construction and loved working with wood.  He was an Army veteran and enjoyed fishing and shrimping.  He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them.  Surviving are his wife: Catherine Nix Tuten of Estill; Son: Jason Miles Tuten and wife Stephanie of Beaufort; Brothers: William Barney Tuten (Leah) of Scotia, Redden Tuten, Jr. (Gloria) and Wilbur Tuten (Ailiene) both of Estill; Sisters: Irene Barker of Ludowici, Georgia, and Hattie Stanley of Varnville.  He was predeceased by a sister Clotele Hadwin and brothers-in-law: Will C. Barker, Ray Stanley, and Joe Hadwin. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, May 5, 2016 in the Robertville Baptist Church of Garnett, conducted by Rev. Barney Tuten, with burial in the Church Cemetery with military Honors.

John Paul Detrick

HAMPTON - Mr. John Paul Detrick, 68, of Hampton, passed away Monday, May 2, 2016 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 11 am, Thursday, May 5, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.  Interment will follow in Varnville Cemetery.

Born February 8, 1948 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Clair Heasley Detrick and Janet Belle Edgar Detrick.  He was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School and the University of South Carolina Law School.  He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.  Mr. Detrick was a partner with Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick Law Firm; and was the founder of Detrick’s Premier Car Wash that now has three locations. 

Mr. Detrick was a true Christian who served the Lord faithfully, with his faith growing stronger during his 7 year battle with cancer.  Most of all, he was the rock of his family.  A dedicated and loving father, father-in-law, grandfather and brother, he always focused on his family and made them, along with his relationship with the Lord, the center of his life.

Surviving are: his children, Denise Broome and her husband John of Aiken, Genise Rabon and her husband Chris of Lexington, Darryl Detrick and his wife Sarah of Murrells Inlet, and Derrick Detrick and his wife Christian of Conway; grandchildren, Travis Broome and his wife Briana, Kelcey Brower, Brooke Broome and her fiancé Elias, Christian Rabon, Olivia Rabon, Dylan Detrick, Ryan Detrick, Darryl Detrick, Jr., Randy Grimm, Dillon Grimm, and Karissa Grimm; great granddaughter, Emma Broome; sisters, Betty French of Varnville, Susanne Whiddon of Simpsonville, Barbara Gray of Brunson, and Karen Berrier of Lexington; brother, Richard Gomrick of Suwanee, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mixon was born in Jasper County, a daughter of the late John Wesley and Beulah G. Horton.  She was a homemaker, a member of the Pine Level Baptist Church, and devoted her life to the care of her family.

Surviving are: Sons: John Henry Mixon “Patricia” and Franklin Mixon of Varnville, and William Mixon “Janet” of Grays; Sister: Betty H. Reid of Ridgeland; and Daughter in Law: Ann Mixon of Grays.  There are 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.  Mrs. Mixson was predeceased by her husband: Herbert E. Mixon, son: O’Grady Mixon; grandson: John Henry Mixon II; and 16 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held 3 PM Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Don Davis, with burial in the Sand Hill Cemetery near Varnville.

Primus Gooding, Jr.

HAMPTON - Mr. Primus Gooding, Jr., affectionately known to his family and friends as,“Coon”, was born, June 14, 1945, in Hampton County, South Carolina, to the late Primus Gooding, Sr., and Marie Gooding. He was a 1965 graduate of the former North District Training School in Varnville, South Carolina. At an early age, he joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. In later years, he faithfully attended Huspah Missionary Baptist Church, where he was active with the Men's Ministry, and assisted in many other capacities of the church.

Mr. Gooding was a United States Army veteran. He was a former employee of Westinghouse where he worked in the shipping Department. After years of dedicated service, he retired from Nevamar in Hampton.

His life was full of blessings. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. His sense of humor and his favorite sayings, and the sound of his laughter, will linger in our ears forever. He was a devoted father, brother, endearing grandfather, uncle, good neighbor, and a gracious friend.

In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Eugene Gooding, and Barney Gooding; Sisters: Mary Ann Risher, and Edna Gooding.

God called him home to rest on, Friday, April 22, 2016, at Ralph A. Johnson - VA Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories, his children: Synphanie (Greg) Boyce, Charlotte, NC, Gerry (Michelle) Powell, Richmond, VA, Primus (Latrelle) Powell, Hampton, SC, and step-son, Burt Williams, Hampton, SC; One brother, John H. Gooding, Hampton, SC; Sister-in-law, Christine Gooding, Hampton, SC ; Brother-in-law, James Risher, Gifford, SC; Six grandchildren: Davon Williams, Dondre Williams, Daijai Williams, Aaron Harper, Alasia Powell and India Curry (whom he called, his special little girls); A host of nieces and nephews; Special niece, Samantha Gooding Newton; loving cousins and friends; including a special friend, Danny Morris.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Huspah Missionary Baptist Church, Hampton.  Burial with military honors was held in the church cemetery.

Cyndie Jones Hiers

HAMPTON - Mrs. Cyndie Jones Hiers, 52, of Hampton, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016 at her residence.

Funeral services were 2 pm, Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.  Interment followed in Johnson St. Paul Cemetery, Hampton.

Born June 21, 1963 in Jacksonville, Florida, she was a daughter of the late W.R. Jones and Betty Ruth Benton.  She was very active with wildlife rescue and enjoyed making cakes and embroidering.  Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who centered her life around her family.  She fostered many children throughout the years and was a mother to everyone.

Surviving are: her husband Mark Anthony Hiers, Sr. of Hampton; children; Roy Keil (Susie) of Fairfield, Ohio, Linda Simmons of Varnville, Jessica Carson (John) of Beaufort, Miranda Cook (Gene) of Hampton, Michelle Aiken (Joey) of Hampton, John Walling, Jr. of Hampton, Tiffany Rodriguez (Japhet) of San Antonio, Texas, Blease Walling (Nicole) of Hampton, Billie Thomas (Dean) of Brunson, and Mark Hiers, Jr. of Hampton; sisters, Shelly McCullum (Mike) of Silver Lake, Wisconsin, Brenda Psyhogios of Silver Lake, Wisconsin, and Brenda Pollard (David) of Walterboro; brother, Paul Jones (Jen) of Ingelside, Illinois; 26 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pastor Thomas Eugene Nafziger

BRADENTON, FLA - Pastor Thomas Eugene Nafziger of Bradenton, Florida passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the age of 69.

Tom was born to parents Lester and Marjorie Nafziger on December 22, 1946 in Wauseon, Ohio. In 1966 he married Shirley Ann Klopfenstein. They had four children: Tyler, Tony, Todd and April. Tom and Shirley felt called to the ministry early in their marriage and were trained at the Institute of Ministry at Christian Retreat in Bradenton, Florida. After serving on staff there, Tom accepted a pastoral position in Hampton, South Carolina. He pastored in Hampton from 1988 until 2009.  During this time, he supervised the AM Christian radio station in Hampton, purchased and operated the local skating rink and pool as an outreach to local children and teenagers, and poured his life into his community.  Tom and Shirley returned to Christian Retreat in 2010 and served as leaders of the Seniors Group.  Throughout his life Tom ministered as a missionary in Haiti, Ghana, India, and Israel. He is also the author of “Fired! By God and Man.” He was a man driven by his faith in and love for the Lord and his love for his family. He served the Lord with a passion for the lost, a humble spirit, and a song in his heart, which could be heard at any moment and was always sung with gusto.

Tom is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Nafziger; his sons: Tyler Eugene Nafziger(Christie), Tony E. Nafziger(Sandra), and Todd Eric Nafziger(Renae); his daughter April Nafziger Shallo(John); his brothers: Leslie Nafziger(Annemarie), Mike Nafziger (Deb), and Lonnie Nafziger; his sisters: Suzie Schrock and Karen Rupp(Lynn); his grandchildren: Ashley (Steven), Racheal, Nicole, Taylor, Thomas, Jay(Candi), Cassandra, Isaiah, Elijah, Lily, Kole, Savannah, and Meagan; and great-grandchildren: Lizzi, Levi, Nora, and May. He is preceded in death by his parents Lester and Marjorie; his two sisters: Judith and Marlene; his brother-in-law, Jim Schrock.

A memorial service was held at Christian Retreat Family Church Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 3:30 in the afternoon.

 

Melvin Shipes

LEXINGTON - Melvin Shipes, 93, passed away on Monday, May 16 at National Health Care in West Columbia. He was married to Mildred W. Shipes for 66 years.  Melvin was born in Jasper County, son of the late Alver and Addie Crosby Shipes.  He retired from the Hampton Coca Cola Bottling Works after 44 years. 

He coached Little League Baseball in Hampton for 31 years and was instrumental in building new ball fields and growing and supporting the program.  He served as the Commissioner of the Lowcountry Football League for many years.  He loved young people and tried to provide a positive experience for all who came in contact with him. 

He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton at the time of his death.  Melvin was an avid gardener.  He was a WWII veteran and served briefly during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 66 years, are; son:  Derrell A. Shipes and wife Sarah of Lexington, daughters:  Sonia S. Kelly and husband Robert, of Vilas, NC and Janis S. Corley and husband Larkin of Lexington; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; one brother: Warren Shipes of Paulkie Island, SC.  He was preceded in death by a son: Jonathan Shipes, two sisters:  Mary S. Rivers and Elizabeth S. Dunn, and two brothers: Heyward Shipes and Seabrook Shipes.

 Funeral services were held held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Hampton, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

Joseph Phillip “JP” Griner

Mr. Joseph Phillip “JP” Griner of Griner Lane near Varnville, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Griner was born in Hampton County, November 24, 1924 a son of the late Joe Monroe and Bessie Thomas Griner.  He retired as a carpenter with Joe Harden Construction Company on Hilton Head Island, and was a member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Surviving are: his Wife: Annette Jarrell Griner of Varnville; Daughters: Judy Sweat of Orangeburg, Peggy Tuten and husband Gerald of Ridgeland, and Tammy Donathan and husband Scott of Varnville.  There are 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 1 step great grandchild. 

Funeral services were held 2 PM Saturday, May 21, 2016 in the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Hazel Priester Hiers Evans

WALTERBORO - Mrs. Hazel Priester Hiers Evans passed tuesday, April 26, 2016 at the Pruitt Health Care Center in Walterboro after an extended illness. She was 96.

Mrs. Evans was born in Colleton County February 17, 1920 a daughter of the late Oscar and Matilda Crosby Priester. She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was known for her love of fishing and her talents in the kitchen…especially making macaroni and pound cakes. 

She is survived by her children: Eugene Hiers (Miriam) of Smoaks, Willie Hiers (Joyce) of Varnville, and Rhoda Hiers Gooch of Summerville. She has one sister, Dovie Schumacher of Columbia, her step-mother Dollie Stone of Walterboro, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 11:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Carrie Mae Ruth Priester

Mother Carrie Mae Ruth Priester, 103, daughter of the late Mr. Jason and Mrs. Mary Ruth, was born November 16, 1912, in Hampton County, South Carolina. She was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 27, 2016 while at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville, South Carolina.

At a young age, Mother Carrie Mae Priester surrendered her life and will to the Lord and became a baptized member of Antioch Christian Church, Disciples of Christ of Varnville, South Carolina. Serving the body of Christ faithfully, she became a member of the church Adult Choir, Missionary Board and the church Deaconess Board. Whenever songs were sung, Mother Priester demonstrated her joy in the Lord, joyfully clapping her hands to the songs being sung! She was also affiliated with the Sons and Daughters of Job for over sixty-five (65) years. She was truly a virtuous woman.

On April 10, 1932, she united in Holy Matrimony to the late Deacon Lawrence Priester, Sr.; to this union were born seven (7) children. Two children preceded her in death: Gertrude and Marion Priester.

Mother Priester was known and loved by many people. The impressions she made on the life of others will be remembered for many, many years to come.

Sacrifices of her love will be cherished and remembered by her five children: Elder Lawrence (Evangelist Eartha) Priester, Jr. of Beaufort, South Carolina, Ms. Elizabeth Green of Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Mary Williams, Ms. Christine Alston, and Mr. Willie Priester, all of Varnville, South Carolina; (3) Grandchildren reared in the home: Ms. Lorrie Lingard, Karen Williams, and James (Shahida) Lingard; (14) Grandchildren; (29) Great grandchildren; (22) Great great grandchildren; (3) Great great great grandchildren; (2) Special nephews: Reverend Aiken Ruth, who was close and dear, and Mr. George Washington, who visited regularly; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and caring friends (which includes three special friends: Ms. Minnie Myers, a close neighbor and visitor; Mrs. Lorine Moore, who telephoned every week; and, Ms. Charlotte Williams, a caregiver).

Patricia Ann Smith Hayes

On July 10, 1942, Patricia Ann Smith was born to Pauline Jones and Nathan Smith. She was, affectionately known to many as, "Coot". She was 1978 graduate of Wade Hampton High School, and was a member of Mt. Pleasant A.M.E. Church in Scotia, South Carolina.
A day of joy and unity occurred in her life, on July 7, 1972, when she was joined in holy matrimony to Johnny Hayes. "Remember me in quiet days while raindrops whisper on your phone. But in your memories, have no grief, let the joy we know remain."

She was an employee of TMSI, for over 20 years in the Transportation Department. She enjoyed fishing, singing, baking and spending time with her grandchildren.
During the brilliance of a new day dawning, at 6:00 a.m., May 11, 2016, just as sunrise was bolding about to attest it's radiance, God looked upon Patricia with gentle eyes and tender compassion and claimed her for His own.

Eddie James Mole

Eddie James Mole, was born to Mr. Joe Jr., and Mrs. Margaret Gordon Mole, June 19, 1959, in Hampton County, South Carolina. He attended the public schools of Hampton County, and was always known as the "quiet child" of the family.

Eddie was employed at Brunson Automobile Sales in Hampton, South Carolina, for many years. He later assisted in the establishment and became co-operator of C&N Auto Parts, in Estill, South Carolina, where he worked alongside his brother, Gary and touched many lives.

Eddie was always a kind, gentle person, and well respected in the community. He was a good son and dedicated to assisting with the care of his mom and dad. He was a father to his nieces and nephews and many other youth. Eddie had a heart for others. A son, a brother. Eddie accepted Christ, and became a man of God.

He entered into rest on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at St. Joseph's Candler Rehabilitation Center, Savannah, Georgia.

Eddie Hugh Drawdy, Jr.

VARNVILLE - Mr. Eddie Hugh Drawdy Jr. of Lowndes Lake Road near Varnville, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at his residence, after an extended illness.

Mr. Drawdy was born October 30, 1964 in Hampton county, a son of Mary Louise Cook Drawdy and the late Eddie Hugh Drawdy Sr.  He was a Gang Saw Operator with Elliott Sawmill in Estill for 28 years, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially watching Nascar Racing.

Surviving besides his mother of Hampton are:  His wife: Evelyn Charlene Jarrell Drawdy of Varnville; Son: Eddie Hugh Drawdy III of Estill; Daughters: Tina and husband Steven Lang of Ridgeland, Casie and husband Alan Brunson of Nixville, and Rachel and husband Bryce Rogers of Estill; Brother: David Drawdy and wife Donna of Hampton; Sisters: Connie and husband Wayne Nettles of Hampton, Gail and husband Scott Lee of Estill, Kathy and husband David Ginn of Estill, and Nancy Walters of Hampton.  There are 7 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Homer Earl Smith, H. E.

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. - Homer Earl Smith, H. E., passed away peacefully on June 2nd, 2016 at 78 years of age in Goodyear, Arizona.

Homer was born in Furman, South Carolina on May 31st, 1938 to Marjorie Brown Smith and Earl Smith.  Homer was the oldest of 11 children. Homer left high school to enlist in the Army and helped to support his family and younger siblings.  He said “I’m a good man and they needed a few good men.”  He was a loving supportive family man and was always so proud of his mother and siblings.  His surviving siblings include: Jerry Smith and his wife Lee Ann of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Madeline Griffin of Pensacola, Florida, Dorothy Wally and her husband Sherryl of Branchville, South Carolina, Margie Sherrod of Atlanta, Georgia, Shirley Hammond of Dandridge, Tennessee, Marilyn Cooke of Barnwell, South Carolina and Marsha Floyd Beasley and her husband Lamar of Barnwell, South Carolina.  He was preceded in death by his sister Nell Monteleone, his brother Francis Marion Smith, and one grandson Max Nelson Smith.

While stationed in Germany, Homer met and married Helga Peterman Trinka from 1966 to 1977.  They had two sons, Michael Smith and Steve Edward Smith, who both followed in their father’s footsteps by serving in the military.  Homer had five grandchildren:  Connor Michael Smith, Anthony Christopher Miller, and Tristan Hans Smith from his son Michael and Max Nelson Smith and Josie Marie Smith from his son Steve.   He also has two daughter-in-laws, Mindy Smith and Angela Smith.

Homer had a distinguished career lasting for 29 years in the Army.  He served his country proudly in Korea and the Vietnam War.   He was stationed around the world but spent the majority of his career in Germany.  Assignments included Platoon Sergeant in the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam where he earned a bronze star and Combat Infantry Badge, Company First Sergeant in the 1st Infantry Division and 4th Infantry Division, Armor Battalion Sergeant Major in the 8th Infantry Division, and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Army Reserves and National Guard in North Carolina.  He retired as a Sergeant Major in 1984.  After his retirement, he enjoyed socializing with other vets at the VFW.

Everyone around Homer knew he loved his family and his friends. We would like to thank everyone for their friendship, love, support, and prayers. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10th at 2:00 PM in the Nixville Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Creason, with burial and reception immediately following.

Edward Henry Robinson

Mr. Edward Henry Robinson, son of the late Mr. Percy Robinson and Mrs. Mae Williams Robinson, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 while at PruittHealth-Walterboro, South Carolina.  He was born August 17, 1932 in Walterboro, South Carolina. 

Mr. Robinson, at an early age, joined Deep Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Islandton, South Carolina under the pastorate of the late Reverend Charlie Anderson.  He attended faithfully until, as a result of declining health, he was no longer able to.   He was a graduate of Ruffin High School, Ruffin, South Carolina.  He enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict.  Upon completion of service, Mr. Edward Robinson was honorably discharged.

He was an avid gardener who loved planting vegetables which he generously gave to family, friends, and neighbors.  His joy was telling jokes. He loved to see others laugh.

Preceding him in death are two siblings, Mrs. Owilender Robinson McQuire and Mr. Charles Robinson.

Mrs. Beatrice Gray Godley, 83, of Islandton, entered into eternal rest Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Colleton Medical Center.  She was the widow of Mr. James Edward Godley.

Funeral services were held 11 am, Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Peniel Baptist Church, 37 Forks Road, Islandton.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

Born November 5, 1932 in Allendale County, she was a daughter of the late Newton Gray and Priscilla Donehue Gray.  She was a member of Peniel Baptist Church.  She loved crocheting, quilting and cooking for her family and friends.  Most of all, she loved her family and always centered her life around them.

Surviving are: her children: James “Bo” Godley and his wife Diane of Islandton, Shirley “Cissy” Poston and her husband Steve of Walterboro, Ralph “Bubba” Godley of Varnville, Steven Godley and his wife Debra of Walterboro, David Godley and his wife Trudy of Islandton, Rose Sullivan of Varnville; grandchildren: Ginger, Casey, Tessa, Kent, Brad, J.W., Andrew, Dustin, and Christopher; great grandchildren, Brianna, Devin, Jaylyn and Chris; sisters, Mary Armstrong of Fairfax, Agnes Hadden of Georgia, Ruth Elkins of Allendale, Edna Smith of Allendale, and Elsey Elkins of Brunson; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathon Sullivan; and a brother, Wilbur Gray.

Syble Appleby

Syble Appleby, 88, passed away on June 7, 2016 in Tallahassee, Florida after a short illness. She was born in Athens, Georgia, on August 30, 1927, to the late Eileen (Thompson) and Clarence Stancell.

Upon graduating from high school Syble went to Atlanta where she met her husband Eugene C. Appleby and began her life as an Army wife. They lived in many places including Frankfurt, Germany, Huntsville, Alabama and back to Atlanta before retiring to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

After the loss of her husband in 2009, Mrs. Appleby relocated to Tallahassee, Florida to be near her daughter. She resided at Cherry Laurel Retirement Community for over 5 years where she met and cherished many wonderful friends. This past December she moved to Centre Pointe Health Facility.

Mrs. Appleby is survived by her daughter Geraldine (Gerry) Acuff and husband Edward Acuff of Tallahassee, her grandson Jeb Acuff and wife Patti of Palm City, Florida, and a brother James Stancell of Winterville, Georgia.

Mrs. Appleby was buried at 10 AM Monday, June 13th, beside her husband in the Appleby Family Plot at Union Cemetery, 7795 Augusta Stage Coach Road, Garnett SC 29922.

Evelyn Elizabeth Matthews Terry

Mrs. Evelyn Elizabeth Matthews Terry, widow of Daniel Willie Meeks Terry, died Thursday, June 9, 2016 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Terry was born in Brunson, August 9, 1933 a daughter of the late Hiram and Effie Simmons Matthews Thornal.  She was a member of St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church, and was a great cook.  She enjoyed cross word and jig saw puzzles, loved history, and was the community beautician.

Surviving are: Sons: Glenn “Puddy” Terry and wife Linda of Crocketville, and Daniel Walker “Danny” Terry of Hampton and friend Linda Crapse of Estill; Daughter: Donna T. Pitman of Hampton; Grandchildren: Lyman “Spike” Pitman III and wife Jennifer of Hampton, Terry Daniel Pitman and wife Jamie of Lynn Haven, Florida, Jaime Lynn Corley and husband Heath of Barnwell; Kip Walker Terry and wife Christy of Lodge, and Brent Edmond Terry and wife Suzanne of Brunson.  There are 11 great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held 4 PM Sunday, June 12, 2016 in the Johnson – St. Paul Cemetery in Hampton, conducted by Elder Robert Dobson, Elder Terrell Harvey, and Brother Paul Tuten.

Mary Ann Sullivan Jarrell

Mrs. Mary Ann Sullivan Jarrell, of Locust Street in Hampton, died Friday, June 10, 2016 at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Jarrell was born in Savannah, GA, February 27, 1937, a daughter of the late John Mack Sullivan, Sr. and Addie Bunch Sullivan.  She was a Bookkeeper for many years, and was a member of the first graduating class in 1955 at Wade Hampton High School.  She loved playing golf, bridge, sewing, and scrapbooking, as well as her cross stitching to which she devoted much of her time. They were given to her children and many others for gifts.  She was a member of the Brunson Baptist Church and attended Hampton Primitive Baptist Church.  Mrs. Jarrell married her late husband, Clyde Jarrell, Jr. on August 6, 1955.

Surviving are: Sons: Billy Jarrell and wife Nancy, and Jeffery Jarrell and wife Elaine, all of Brunson; Daughter: Jen DeLoach and husband Curtis of Varnville; Brothers: Bobby Sullivan of Brunson and James Sullivan of Florida; Sister: Ruth Jamison of Hampton; and grandchildren: Bucky Jarrell of Marietta, GA, Seth Jarrell and wife Megan of Aiken, Nikki Hudson and husband Dave of Charleston, Allyson Rivers and husband Jason of Varnville, Scott Jarrell and wife Megan of Hampton, and Marllie and Tripp DeLoach of Varnville.  There are eight great grandchildren.  Mrs. Jarrell was predeceased by brothers: John Mack Sullivan, Jr., William Sullivan, and Ronnie Sullivan; Sister: Jeanelle S. Couch; and a granddaughter: Renee Simmons.

Graveside services were held 3 P.M. Monday, June 13, 2016 in the Johnson-St. Paul Cemetery in Hampton conducted by the Elder Robert Dobson and Rev. R. P. Hodge and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

George Allen Mills

Mr. George Allen Mills, of Jackson Avenue in Hampton, died Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Pruitt Health Care Facility in Estill.

Mr. Mills was born in Walterboro, March 8, 1950 a son of the late David and Mary Luelle Cook Mills.  He was a licensed barber, but had worked with his father with Mills Meat Sales.  He loved to play his guitar and played Gospel Music at the Hampton Church of God of Prophecy, where he was a member, and he also played at the local nursing homes.

Surviving are:  Brother: Dr. Francis A. Mills of Hampton and a Sister: Elizabeth R. Goettee of Hampton.  Mr. Mills was predeceased by his parents; his wife: Patricia Marlene Wilson Mills; and two brothers: David M. Mills Jr. and Gerald Mills. 

Funeral services will be 3 P.M. Thursday, June 16, 2016 in the Hampton Church of God of Prophecy, conducted by Rev. Gilbert Linder, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. 

Visitation will begin at 2 P.M. Thursday prior to the services at the church.

Betty Lucille Berrie DeLoach

Mrs. Betty Lucille Berrie DeLoach of Speed Limit Road near Varnville, died Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at her residence.

Mrs. DeLoach was born in Jacksonville, Florida October 29, 1924, a daughter of the late Daniel Ralph Berrie and Katie Louise Stewart Berrie.  She was the head cashier and worked alongside her husband at Piggly Wiggly in Estill, and later with her son at Galaxy Grocery Store in Estill.  She was a devoted Christian and a member of the Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church near Estill.  Mrs. DeLoach was the widow of Elder C. J. DeLoach.

Surviving are: Sons: Timothy C. DeLoach of Clemson, and Paul D. DeLoach and wife Cathy of Estill; Daughters: Elaine D. DuBose and husband Frank of Columbia, and Ellen D. Long and husband Clayton of Estill; Grandchildren: Ryan C. DuBose, Monica C. DeLoach, Charlotte Albridge, Jordan Long, Paul Daniel DeLoach, Lisa Hudgens, and Matthew DeLoach.  There are 6 great grandchildren.  Mrs. DeLoach was predeceased by a son, Mark A. DeLoach and a grandson, Ross DuBose.

Funeral services were held 10 AM Saturday, June 18, 2016 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Elder Robert Dobson and Elder Terrell Harvey, with burial in the Live Oak Cemetery near Varnville.

Amy Simpson Crosby

Mrs. Amy Simpson Crosby, 60, of Walterboro, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Trident Medical Center.  She was the widow of Mr. Thomas Frampton Crosby.

Funeral services were held 3 pm, Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Bethel Baptist Church, 3481 Sidneys Road, Walterboro. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Born November 24, 1955 in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Charles L. Simpson and Gertrude Dukes Simpson.  She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.  Known to everyone as “Momma Amy”, she will always be remembered for the love she had for her family and friends and especially her love of cooking for everyone.

Surviving are: her children, Lorie Stanley of Walterboro, Stephen Westbury of Walterboro, Phillip Crosby of Walterboro, Tonya Tager of Cope, Todd Crosby of Cope and Chad Crosby of Cope; grandchildren, Jessica Stanley, Hunter Stanley, Whitney Westbury, Cameron Westbury, Tyler Westbury, Bradley Westbury, Jace Westbury, Alana Crosby, Kendall Crosby, Nikki Adams, Savannah Tager, Hannah Maxey, Ansley Crosby, Jeffrey Crosby, TC Crosby, Allie Crosby, and Jacob Crosby; several great grandchildren; brother, Glenn Simpson of Rowesville; and sister, Louise Rickborn of St. George.  She was preceded in death by brothers, Lee Stearns and Wayne Simpson.

Danny Joe Green

Mr. Danny Joe Green, son of the late Ms. Dorothy Green, was born in Hampton County, South Carolina, February 17, 1956.  He departed this life on Sunday, June 12, 2016 while at Colleton Regional Medical Center, Walterboro, South Carolina. 

At an early age, Danny Joe confessed Christ and joined Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina.  At Samaritan, he served faithfully until his health began to fail. Danny Joe was past President of the Samaritan Baptist Church Usher Board, a title he held faithfully. 

He was educated in the public schools of Hampton County, South Carolina. 

Fond memories of Danny are left to his family.  There are five sisters: Mrs. Vivian Newton, Ms. Johnnie Mae Green, Mrs. Mazie Ree Frazier, Mrs. Brenda (Bobby) Grant, and Ms. Diane Williams, all of Varnville, South Carolina; A niece reared as a sister, Mrs. Shirley (Harry) Mole of Charleston, South Carolina; Two brothers: Mr. Charles (Florrie) Williams and Mr. Ulysee Green, all of Varnville, South Carolina; A nephew reared as a brother, Mr. Anthony (Brandi) Williams of Aurora, Colorado; An aunt, Mrs. Sadie Green of Estill, South Carolina; Several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and sympathizing friends.

Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2016 at Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville with burial in the Hickory Hill Cemetery in Varnville.

Laura F. Newton

Mrs. Laura F. Newton, 81, daughter of the late Mr. Arthur Roosevelt Frazier and Mrs. Sadie Manor Frazier, fell asleep in death on Friday, June 10, 2016 at her residence in Furman, South Carolina.

She was born in Hampton County, South Carolina July 7, 1934.  She was employed for many years in the sewing industry as a seamstress.  Her avid love for sewing continued in making wedding and prom dresses for close friends and family.

She was joined in matrimony to the late Mr. Verdell Newton.  They were happily married for forty-five years, until his death in 1996.

Mrs. Laura F. Newton was baptized in 1974 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and has served faithfully and loyally for over forty years at the Hampton Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses.

To cherish her memories are three sons: Mr. Arthur Newton (Gail) of Columbia, South Carolina, Mr. Ralph Newton (Sylvia) of Jackson, South Carolina, and Mr. Alexander Newton (Valerie) of Estill, South Carolina; Twelve grandchildren; Eleven great grandchildren; Two sisters: Mrs. Eloise Wright of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mrs. Betty Jean Wilson of Savannah, Georgia; Three sisters-in-law; Numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 1 p.m June 18, 2016 at the Hampton Congregation of Jehovah’s Witness with burial in the Good Hope Cemetery in Estill.

Carlton Edward “Rusty” Lathan Sr.

Mr. Carlton Edward “Rusty” Lathan Sr. of Holly Street East in Hampton died early Monday, June 20, 2016 in Roper Hospital in Charleston, after an extended illness.

Mr. Lathan was born in Columbia, September 17, 1961 a son of Virginia Dobson Lathan Sinclair and the late Edward H. Lathan.  He had been employed at Tyson Foods in Monroe, NC for a number of years, and had worked with KCB Industries in Brunson, until his illness last summer.  He was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School and attended Varnville 1st Baptist Church.  He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and the Carolina Panthers.

Surviving are: His parents of Hampton: Richard and Virginia Sinclair; Wife: Ruby L. Lathan of Varnville; Two sons: Carlton Lathan Jr. of Bluffton, and Courtney Justin Lathan of Hampton; Sisters: Elaine and husband Jeff Netzley of North Augusta, Terri Varn and husband Rick of Columbia, and Debra Ginn and husband Eddie of Varnville.  There is one granddaughter: Carrie Lathan of Beaufort.

Lillie Maude Tuten Dobson

Mrs. Lillie Maude Tuten Dobson of Standale Street in Hampton died Monday, June 20, 2016 at her residence, after an extended illness.  She was the widow of Ernest Lee Dobson.

 Mrs. Dobson was born in Jasper County, July 25, 1921 a daughter of the late George and Rosa Smith Tuten.  She retired from Estill Manufacturing Company as an inspector and was a member of the Luray Christian Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, who devoted her time to her family.

 Surviving are: Sons: George Dobson and wife Clara of Luray, and Eddie Dobson of Raleigh, NC; Daughters: Linda Braxton, Joyce Wier, and Ernie Glynn all of Hampton; and a Step Son: Earl Dobson and wife Lottie of Miami, FL.  There are 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.  Mrs. Dobson was predeceased by 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, June 23, 2016 in the Luray Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Noel Cooper, with burial in the Beech Branch Cemetery.

Fran Jeffords Pait

 

 

 

Martha Frances "Fran" Jeffords Pait, 64, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 25, 2016.

Fran was born in Florence County on June 6, 1952 and was a daughter of the late William Albert, Jr. and Mildred Davis Jeffords. She was a 1970 graduate of Lake City High School, former advertising manager for The People Sentinel Newspaper of Barnwell. Fran was well known for teaching The Shag and line dancing. She was a member of the Barnwell First Baptist Church and the Willese Keel Sunday School Class. She will be remembered for her smile and sweet spirit by her family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 11 am in the Barnwell First Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Baker officiating. Burial was in the Lake City First Baptist Church Cemetery, Lake City SC.

Memorials may be made in Fran's name to the SC Alzheimer's Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd, Suite 100, and West Columbia SC 29169.

Survivors include three daughters, Amy (Jay) Myrick of Hampton, Rebecca (Birt) Willis of Williston and Meg (Brad) Williams of Summerville; sister, Marie Jeffords Condon of Mt. Pleasant; brother Edwin Albert (Harriett) Jeffords of Hickory NC; seven grandchildren Beth Gardner, Marie Hutto, Emily Willis, Andrew Willis, Sara Williams, Savannah Myrick, Caroline Williams and Morgan Myrick; great grandchildren, Aerith Grant and Connor Hutto; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

James Henry Sauls

HAMPTON - Mr. James Henry Sauls of Holly Street Extension in Hampton died Sunday morning at his residence.

Mr. Sauls was born in Ehrhardt, May 15, 1936 a son of the late Lucas Henry Sauls and Mary Lou Reavis Sauls.  He was the owner and operator of Sauls Wrecker Service in Hampton County for many years.  Mr. Sauls was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.  He served in the National Guard, enjoyed fishing, and enjoyed working on and building his own wrecker equipment. 

Surviving are: His wife of 59 years Shirley Terry Sauls of Hampton; Daughters: Kathy Mosley and husband Randy of Early Branch, Lisa Ashby and husband Michael of Hampton, and Tina Moseley and husband Mike of Hampton; Sisters: Mary Nell Godwin of Beaufort, and JoAnn Long of Hampton; Grandchildren: Brian Henry Sauls and wife Sheena, Amanda Mosley, Dalton Shramek and Lauren, and Collin Harter and fiancée Ashley; and one great grandchild: Lucy Sauls.  Mr. Sauls was predeceased by a brother Dan Sauls.

Sarah Frances Heape Dempsey

Sarah Frances Heape Dempsey, 90, of 19995 Pocotaligo Road, Early Branch, SC, died Tuesday evening, June 28, 2016, at John E. Harter Nursing Center, after an extended illness.

She was born in Hampton County July 5, 1925, daughter of the late William Vincent Heape and Florrie Platts Heape.  Mrs. Dempsey was a great cook and loved her family, gardening, music and her church family.  She was the widow of James Earl Dempsey.

She is survived by daughters: Helen D. Tuten of Varnville, SC, Elizabeth D. Hadwin (Otis) of Brunson, SC, Margaret D. Mathis (I. W.) of Hampton, SC and Betty D. Terry (Bert) of Hampton, SC; son, Willie J. Dempsey (Kathy) of Early Branch, SC.  There are 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.  She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, 2 sisters, Dora Lee H. DeLoach and Madeline H. Peeples, and 1 sister-in-law, Shirley W. Heape.  She was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Randall Dempsey, and brother, Earl V. Heape.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 in the Sand Hill Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Don Turner, with burial following in the church cemetery directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.

Frances Brunson Mason

Mrs. Frances Brunson Mason of Furman (Hampton County) died Wednesday afternoon in the Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, SC.  Mrs. Mason was born in Hampton County, May 23, 1929 a daughter of the late Edward Benjamin and Della Rebecca DeLoach Brunson.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Furman United Methodist Church. Surviving are: Sons: George O. Mason Jr. and wife Trudie of Heath Springs, SC, and Kenneth Francis Mason of Walterboro; Brother: Edward Benjamin Brunson Jr. of Orangeburg; and 4 grandchildren.  Mrs. Mason was predeceased by her husband: George O. Mason Sr. and son: Nicholas Mason.

Cynthia Marie Herndon

Mrs. Cynthia Marie Herndon, 69, of Varnville, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.  She was the widow of Ernest Marion “Ham” Herndon, Jr.

Born December 13, 1946 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late William Carl “Bill” Watters and Mary Lee Mixson Watters.  Mrs. Herndon was a retired LPN, having worked at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Estill Nursing Home and Ridgeland Nursing Home.  She loved being a nurse, reading, going to movies and going shopping.  She loved to travel to The Great Smokey Mountains and especially loved Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  Most of all she loved being with her family and friends.

Surviving are: her daughters, Cindy Davis of Varnville and Beverly Herndon Meetze and her husband James F. Meetze of Columbia; grandchildren, Andie Davis Liam Davis, Timothy Meetze and his wife Brittany, James Christian Meetze, Brandon Meetze and Ryan Meetze; brothers, Harry Watters and his wife Painee of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Michael S. Watters and his wife Susan of Goldsboro, North Carolina; nephew, Toby Watters and his wife Amber of Newport News, Virginia; niece, Jennifer Adkins and her husband Brad of Goldsboro, North Carolina; several great nieces and nephews; and one great grandchild on the way.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Hampton County Relay for Life.
