He was a powerful influence on his family and friends in word and deed. He knew the value of time. More importantly he knew and boldly proclaimed the truth that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior. This one choice was the defining influence of his life. The best witness he reflected was to be the friend to everyone Jesus would be, always take time with people, and leave them with a smile. At the age of 19 he left the Hampton he loved to faithfully serve the country he loved. He lived all over this country and traveled around the world many times, serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Wherever he lived he carried in his heart the love lessons he learned at an early age in Hampton. Those lessons of love touched so many others. Always a hard worker, he put his whole heart in every endeavor. God, family and country were his top priorities.
Church was a constant presence in his life. He served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and chaired many committees. As long as his health allowed he was an active member and worker at Pine Level Baptist Church in Grays. His work life was devoted to the United States Air Force (30 years) and Westinghouse (20 years). While in the Air Force, he also served two long tours, one in Panama and one in Tokyo, Japan, and three short tours, one in Puerto Rico, one in Korea, and one in Vietnam. He was a member of the Purple Heart Low Country Unit (Chaplain and JAG), the Hampton Masonic Lodge, and Pine Level Baptist Church of Grays. He loved his community and enjoyed serving in the American Legion #108 (serving as Commander and with a special love for Boys State), the Purple Heart Association (serving as Chaplain) and as a member and officer of the Masonic Lodge #154.
Special thanks to all the care providers of Hospice of South Carolina and Dr. Dan Ripley of Beaufort.

Betty Morningstar Martin, Margaret Elizabeth Martin, "The Pink Lady" of Rum Gully, 85, entered into eternal rest Thursday, August 4, 2016 at her residence.

Funeral services were held 2 pm, Sunday, August 7, 2016 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  Burial followed in Peniel Baptist Church Cemetery, Islandton.

Betty was born October 8, 1930. She met Dorrell (DM) Martin, Well Driller, in Ehrhardt. He would drive down the street and she would jump from the tree limbs into his Model A. It was not long before she left Ehrhardt where there was electricity to Rum Gully where there was none.  They eloped and headed to Savannah but the Model A threw a rod in Ridgeland where they married and remained married for 56 years, until Daddy died in 2000.

There were five children from the marriage: Bonnie Martin, of the home, who spent most of her life by Mama's side; Jacquelyn Martin Jarrell of Walterboro; John Dorrell Martin Sr., who died in 2009, and his wife Barbie; Margie Beasley, who died in 2004; a six-month old baby, Connie, who died on December 23rd, 1954.  Also surviving are nine grands, twenty great-grands, and one great-great grand.
Betty was an extraordinary woman who could do anything.  She built our home by tearing down the Old Tom Polk House.  I remember the day she backed into the old chimney with the pick-up truck to knock it down.  Then we kids had to chip old cement off of old bricks that she used to build the foundation.  She hand built the cabinets, a desk and the vanities, plumbed it, did the electric wiring and put in the duct work for the heating and air unit.  When my Brother Johnny came of age to play little league, there was no team at Bells Elementary.  She started the team, coached them and picked them up for practices and games.  She took them all them all the way to the all-stars that year. There are young men who call her "Coach" to this day.

There was nothing she would not attempt or do.  I watched her flood her boots and wade to the bottom of Willow Swamp to find a lighter with a diamond in the side that my Daddy had given her. They never exchanged gifts, all their money, what they had back then was spent on us.  We could not have asked for a more loving and caring mother.  We will miss you Moma!

Mamo, as she was affectionately known by all is best remembered by “The Rum Gully Christmas Lights” in Rum Gully.  It was an awesome display.  The last year of the lights over ten thousand people from twenty-two counties signed the register in the front yard.  She created a traffic jam in Rum Gully.  Rum Gully was known for its liquor stills.  Moma served lemonade from the liquor stills.  There were even tour buses.  Moma was one of a kind.

Beloved wife, mother, sister, and daughter, Margaret Ashby Baker Lawton, 67, died at home in Lexington on August 9, 2016.

“Peggy” was born on September 27, 1948, in Savannah, Georgia, to Samuel Broughton and Margaret Camp Baker who raised her in Estill, South Carolina, with her two younger brothers Broughton and David.

Throughout her life, Peggy was known for her tenacious spirit, her courage in the face of crises, her boundless empathy and compassion, and her devotion to her savior Jesus Christ.

Peggy spent her childhood climbing trees, chasing her cousins, and disciplining her brothers who lovingly called her “Little Mama.”

As an adult, she devoted herself to caring for others through nuclear medicine.  She began her studies at Duke Medical University and at Orangeburg Hospital where she cared for the victims of the Orangeburg Civil Rights Massacre of 1968.  As a nuclear medicine technologist in Greenville, South Carolina, Peggy submerged herself into the role of caregiver, often praying for and befriending patients.  Her reputation for compassion compelled her co-workers to nickname her “The Church Lady.”

Indeed, Peggy was the church lady.  As a longtime member of St. Giles Presbyterian, she served as a cornerstone to the church and as catalyst for its progress.  Peggy initiated the church’s prayer chain in the 1980’s, and she also assisted other churches in starting their own prayer chains.  Later, Peggy trained to be a Stephen Minister and in turn spearheaded a successful program in the congregation.  As a Presbyterian leader, Peggy served as an elder repeatedly, worked on the search committee for new pastors, preached sermons on occasion, and hosted a woman’s retreat in which she taught other women how to pray.  Peggy was a champion of seminary students, often encouraging them and supporting them, and serving for the presbytery on the Committee for Pastoral Preparation.

Peggy’s dogged efforts to support all aspects of church life were a reflection of a devout faith in her savior Jesus Christ.  Through her example, she drew others to Christ, witnessing to them in words and deeds.  Peggy could often be found in hospital waiting rooms, at the bedsides of the ill, or in the darkest moments of those in need.  Her words of comfort and silent wisdom provided all who knew her with the peace of Christ.  Peggy was quick to use her humor and candor to relieve those facing anxiety, grief, depression, and fear.  Peggy served others through driving for Meals on Wheels, volunteering at the United Ministries Food Bank, and collecting donations for Lexington Interfaith Community Services.  Peggy embraced the lost, the outcast, and the ostracized, always seeking ways to show grace and mercy in God’s name.

Married for nearly 48 years, Peggy was an adoring and loving wife to Wesley and a inimitably amazing mother to Ashby, Ginny, and Will.  Her slapstick style and witty banter filled the house with laughter and excitement.  Her energy and determination encouraged all of the family to seek adventure, never give up, and follow God with bold obedience.

Peggy Lawton is survived by her husband Wesley Willingham Lawton, Junior; three children Ashby Lawton Jones (Bret), Virginia Lawton Wood (Charles), and Wesley Willingham Lawton III (fiancée Stacy); as well as her brother David Blackshear Baker.  Her seven grandchildren are her legacy.  Their names are:  Margaret Holly Jones, Houston Samuel Jones, Frances Ashby Wood, Wesley Willingham Lawton IV, James Lawton Wood, Scarlett Bancroft Wood, and Jackson Lee Lawton.

Funeral services followed by a visitation were held at Estill Presbyterian Church, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Estill Presbyterian Church, 343 Clarke Ave, Estill, South Carolina 29918

Martha Ann Thomas Sullivan “Mott,” 68, of Summerville, SC, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at Trident Medical Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2016, in Parks Funeral Home Chapel at 2 o’clock. Burial will follow in Dorchester Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted.
Martha was born December 22, 1947, in Rock Hill, SC, a daughter of the late Emmitt Lee Thomas and Lurina Chavis Thomas Carrigg. Martha and her husband, Jerry Douglas Sullivan, Sr., from Fairfax, SC were married for 51 years. They resided in Allendale, SC with their two sons, Jerry Douglas Sullivan, Jr. and Thomas Bryan Sullivan. She owned and operated Villager Stylon in Allendale before retiring and moving to Summerville to be with her children.

Martha was the matriarch of the family. She talked and everyone listened. She always had to get the last word in. Mott loved Jesus Christ and she turned to him often for help in the past few years while battling her illness. She is now rejoicing in Heaven with her Momma, Aunt Mill, Aunt Bessie, and cousin, Nora. “Thank you, Lord Jesus” was one of her favorite sayings. Mott’s grandpa Chavis nicknamed her “Robison” when she was a little girl. Along with many others, he spoiled her rotten. He used to say to her, “Robison, if you don’t go empty that slop jar, I’m gonna cut your butt.” But, like so many times, he never got around to it.

Survivors include 2 sons: Jerry D. Sullivan, Jr. and Thomas Bryan Sullivan; grand-daughter, Courtney Nichole S. Garcia (Brandon) of Summerville; great-grandson, Ayden King Garcia; 3 step great-grandchildren, Damian Raul Tapia, Isabella Marie Rojo, and Julian Miguel Garcia; 3 sisters, Ruth Goddard (Kenneth) of Summerville, Letha Pratt (Ken) of Walterboro, and Brenda Carrigg of Summerville; 2 brothers, Steve Thomas (Linda) of Gaston, and Frank Thomas of Lexington; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend who was like a sister to her, Ula Sineath of Allendale, SC.

Family members and friends have lost a very good-hearted loved one. She will be truly missed by many, but never forgotten.

David “Scott” Corbett

David “Scott” Corbett, a great and true man of faith, business partner, philanthropist, and extreme perfectionist died on October 16, 2016.

Scott was the first born and only son of Wilbur Ray and Joanne King Corbett.  He inherited his passion for knowledge, travel, and the humanities from his parents, and they instilled in him the virtues of compassion, generosity, and integrity. He developed his colorful vocabulary, a wicked sense of humor, and the ‘I-have-to-recycle-EVERYTHING-including-the-Williams-Cleaners’-bags-and-twisty-ties’ all on his own.

Scott was a brainiac, ruining every bell curve possible. He was valedictorian of his senior class at Cape Fear Academy and a National Merit Scholar.  During his professional career, he established a legacy of service to CFA that spanned more than two decades.  He was the founding president of the alumni association and helped CFA secure a $5,125,000 Variable Rate Demand Bond from the NC Educational Facilities Finance Agency.  Scott had the CFA Biological Sciences Classroom named in honor of his parents, and he was honored as the school’s first Trustee Emeritus in 2015.

At Duke University, Scott received a Bachelor of Science degree in both physics and math.  Post-graduation, he always amused himself by checking the annual Duke GPA (grade point average) statistics to ensure that his fellow physics majors continued to graduate with one of the lowest GPAs.  Scott volunteered for the Duke University Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee by interviewing hundreds of local high school seniors during their Duke undergraduate admission process.  This Blue Devil’s only blunder?  He married a Tar Heel.

Scott earned a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Chicago.  He lived at International House, aDavid Rockefeller funded dormitory that was designed to link the brotherhood of man through better knowledge and understanding of life and culture of all people.  The pyromaniac nearly burned it down move-in day by plugging in his illegal dormitory refrigerator.  Scott began his love of grand opera in high school; in Chicago, he became a patron of and attended operas at the Lyric Opera House.  He was always amazed that he never saw the same people at the Lyric that he did at either the Gatornationals or Carolina Nationals NHRA drag racing events.

Scott’s faith never vacillated; God and church came first. He was baptized, confirmed, and married at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmington.  There he taught Sunday School and served as finance chair, treasurer, and finance/stewardship committee member.  The Word was so powerful to Scott and his mother that they re-designed the pastor’s study to be more meditative.  Scott supported fledgling United Methodist churches and was selected by Bishop Gwinn to lead the financial campaign for his Leadership Academy.  If he had it his way, Scott would pass a collection plate at his Celebration of Life.

Scott knew that Wilmington needed an engaging art museum.  He served multiple board terms and was a member of the executive, finance, and strategic planning committees at the previous St. John’s Museum of Art and the current Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum.  He also helped underwrite or lent art work from his collection for exhibitions. A museum’s beauty mesmerized Scott.

And, Scott loved his profession and the people with whom he worked, both inside and outside the company.  He drove everyone crazy with his having to have his blue ink pen, Aquafina water bottle, and grammatically perfect documents.  (This had to be approved by a retired UNCW professor prior to publication.)   Scott was the CEO of Corbett Package Company, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than helping make all the Corbett Companies successful and empowering each employee to be their very best.  Two of his greatest business/environmental accomplishments were that he was instrumental in the successful sale of Roan Island to the Nature Conservancy and of Airlie Gardens to New Hanover County.

Our team of doctors, nurses, and medical staff were THE best in the business.  We appreciated their willingness to support the aggressive treatments we requested and he tolerated.

Scott is survived by his wife, Diana Greene Corbett and their four cats Pywacket, Tiger, OJ, and Calipatra; his three sisters Shannon Corbett Maus (Bill), Melissa Ann Corbett, and Rebecca Corbett McGowan (Bill); aspiring nieces and nephews; and a myriad of backyard critters.

Family visitation will be Friday, October 21, 2016 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Cape Fear Country Club, 1518 Country Club Road in Wilmington.  A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1403 Market Street in Wilmington.

Scott requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross (1102 South 16th Street, Wilmington, NC  28401) or to the Music Ministry at Trinity United Methodist Church (1403 Market Street, Wilmington, NC  28401).

Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington, NC is in charge of the arrangements.
