Mrs. Rachael Virginia Jarrell Hatcher of Turner Expressway near Estill, died Tuesday night, Nov. 30, 2016, at the home of her daughter in Hampton.

Mrs. Hatcher was born in Hampton County, November 14, 1942, a daughter of the late Bennie and Dora Nix Jarrell. She was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening and sewing, and had many adopted children and grandchildren throughout the years. She was a member of Nixville Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Husband, Austin Phillip Hatcher of Estill; Son, Phillip Hamilton Hatcher and wife Faith of Lugoff; Daughters: Penelope Moore and husband James of Beaufort, and Catherine Hatcher of Hampton; Brothers: Charles Jarrell and wife Evelyn, B.L. Dick Jarrell and wife Janet, Dave Jarrell, Edgar Jarrell and wife Lynn, and Jerry Jarrell and wife Frances, all of Estill; Brother in Law: Lewis Smith of North Charleston; and Grandchildren: Andrew and Nicholas Moore, and Gabe and Lance Hatcher. There are a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hatcher was predeceased by a sister: Maybelle Smith, and a Sister in Law: Bobby Jarrell.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 2, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, located at 300 Mulberry Street West.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2016, in the Nixville Baptist Church, with burial in the Nixville Cemetery.

Mrs. Maxine Edwards Tuten of Stone and Patrick Road near Varnville, died Thursday night, Dec. 1, 2016, in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Tuten was born in Mars Hill, North Carolina, May 28, 1937, a daughter of the late Luther Carson Edwards and Pansy Ethel Smith Edwards. She was a History Teacher at Patrick Henry Academy for many years, and later was the owner and operator of Maxine’s Fabric Store in Hampton. She also served as Director of the Hampton County Arts Council for 14 years, and was very active in many community activities and also on the State Level.  She was a member of the Varnville 1st Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Son: Kent Tuten and wife Lynn of Simpsonville; Daughters: Kitzi T. Murphy of Varnville and Laura T. Burton and husband Chris of Loganville, Georgia; and one Brother: Preston Edwards of Asheville, N.C. Grandchildren: Trey, Laney, and Katie Tuten; and Sarah, Zeb, Callaway, and Wyatt Burton.

Mrs. Tuten was pre-deceased by: her husband, Kenneth LaVerne Tuten Sr., a son, Christopher Eric Tuten, and Brothers:  J.V. Edwards and Carol Edwards; and a Sister; Ruby Slagle. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at the Varnville 1st Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly, with the Family Burial at a later date. The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014, or place a poinsettia in the church of your choice in her memory.

Julius Lee Leary was born on June 1, 1938, and moved to his heavenly home on Dec. 4, 2016. He was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine Leary.
Lee was a football standout for Greenwood High School and then Newberry College. His love for the game led him to be a teacher and coach in North, SC, for many years.  Lee then became an insurance salesman and then a district manager for over 30 years and after retirement Lee served as the building and grounds supervisor for his beloved Concord Baptist Church in Anderson, where he also taught Sunday School and served as Chairman of Deacons.
Lee was known for his kind, gentle spirit. He loved his family more than anything. He leaves behind a Godly legacy in his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Diane Altman Leary. He leaves behind his son, Ken Leary (Teresa); daughters: Katrina Collins (Garry) and Kaylene Foster (Michael); grandchildren: Hunter Leary (Hannah) and Caroline Leary, Mackenzie and Jackson Collins, and Graham Foster; great-grandchild: Townes Leary; survived also by his siblings: Edward, Jim, Leslie and Mary Catherine Leary.
A graveside service for Julius Lee Leary’s family and “Lowcountry” friends will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, at Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, SC at 2:00 pm.  A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 at 4:00 p.m., at Concord Baptist Church in Anderson, SC, with receiving of friends after the service.

Thelma Christine Bryson Fisher, 93, entered eternal rest on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, lovingly surrounded by her children. Thelma was born on Sept. 26, 1923, in Sylva, Jackson County, NC.  She was the daughter of Robert Bryson and Sarah Wykle Bryson. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, William Harold Fisher, who lovingly called her his brown-eyed girl. She was a long-time member of Holmes Avenue Baptist Church and, later, of Friendship Baptist Church.
Thelma is survived by her daughter, Vera F. Stanley (Donnie) of Huber, NC, and her son, Mike Fisher (Merrie) of Goose Creek; two sisters, Mary Bryson Parker and Jessie Bryson Cagle; one brother, Glenn Bryson, along with many nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren: Jennifer Armstrong (Jerry), Jill Simpson (Bryan), Ryan Fisher (Sarah), and Shaun Ferguson (Jen), as well as her great-grandchildren: Kyle, Emily, Chase, Lindsey, Laurel, Nalla, Avery, Ellie, Patrick, and Sadie. Thelma loved her family deeply and was known for loving to shop, her beautiful clothes, and her sense of humor and fun.
A private service and burial will be held with interment beside her husband at Carolina Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be sent to the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Benjamin McArthur Ayer, of Locust Street in Hampton, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 6, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Ayer was born in Charleston County November 1, 1942, a son of the late Hallie Edward Ayer and Neta Minerva Crosby Ayer. He was a Quality Control Inspector with Ayer – Tech Construction Company. He served in the Marines from 1960 to 1964 and served in Vietnam. He was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge for 40 years, the Jahab Shrine Club, and coached little league baseball for several years. Mr. Ayer was also a member of Varnville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are: wife, Ann Tuten Ayer, of Hampton; sons: Benjamin Ayer II and wife Cheryl and Christopher Blaine Ayer, all of Hampton; daughter, Lisa Young and husband Mark of Varnville; four grandchildren he raised: Cole Ginn of Cummings, Emily Ginn of Varnville, Kelsey Stanley and husband Phil of Hampton, and Cassie Ginn of Hampton; brother, Jimmy Ayer and wife Ellen of Hampton; sisters: Shirley Freeman and husband Miles, and Linda Rhodes and husband Jenks all of Brunson; and other loving grands and great-grands: Brett, Caleb, Peyton, Gage, and Layla Ayer, Brandon, Madison, Savannah, and Kimberly Young, Colby, Autumn, Lucian, Cherish, and Trinity Ginn, Tradd Stanley, Allison, James, and Allen Watson. He was predeceased by a sister Yvonne Parker.

Visitation is Saturday, Dec. 10, at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, located at 300 Mulberry Street from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The casket will be placed in the church Sunday, Dec. 11, at 1:00 p.m. prior to services.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, in the Varnville First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Kelly. Burial will follow in the Ayer Family Cemetery, at Rivers Bridge State Park near Ehrhardt, with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the Autism Research Institute, 4182 Adams Avenue, San Diego, CA 92116, or to American Heart Association, Congenital Heart Disease, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979.

Mr. Fred Daniel Sease, 87, of Ehrhardt, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at Pruitt Healthcare in Bamberg.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, Mount Pleasant Road, Ehrhardt.  Interment will follow in Ehrhardt Cemetery.

Born Sept. 16, 1929, in Colleton County, he was a son of the late D.A. Sease and Mary Rhoad Sease. He was a 1946 graduate of Ehrhardt High School and a 1951 graduate of Clemson University, where he received a B.S. in Agronomy and was a member of the Pershing Rifles. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant and received the Army Combat Infantry Badge.

Mr. Sease made his career in farming. He was a member of the Colleton-Bamberg Young Farmers group, the South Carolina Cattleman’s Association, as well as the Salkehatchie Cattleman’s Association. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, which led him to be the Charter President of the Savannah Creek Hunting Club.

Mr. Sease was a lifelong member of Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church.  In addition to being a dedicated farmer, he was dedicated to his church and doing the Lords’ work. He was a Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years, served on the church council and was a former Sunday School Teacher. He was also a founding board member of Andrew Jackson Academy and Chairman of the school board.

Surviving are: his wife of 61 years, Helen Bellamy Sease of Ehrhardt; children, Doctor Mark Sease of Ehrhardt, Marsha Sease Patrick and her husband Doctor Bob Patrick of Eatonton, Georgia, and Kevin Sease and his wife Cheryl of Ehrhardt; and grandchildren, Jesse Patrick and his wife Brighton, Doctor Rachel P. Embree and her husband Josh, and Corey Sease. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Sease.

The family would like to especially thank David Hiers and Gay Ayer for all the care and support they have given Mr. Fred during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to his beloved church: Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, Post Office Box 249, Ehrhardt, South Carolina, 29081.

 Mrs. Lillie Mae Grant Johnson, of Estill, SC, was born on April 20, 1943, to the late Charlie and Jannie Grant, and departed this life on Dec. 11, 2016.

She attended school in Garnett, SC.

At an early age, Lillie Mae joined Hopewell CME Church, where she enjoyed singing on the choir and working as a homemaker.

Lillie Mae was joined in marriage to the late Alex Ling.  To this union, they were blessed with 4 children.  Later, she married the late Prince Brown and they were blessed with one child.  Finally, she was married to Stephen Johnson for 27 years.

Four brothers preceded her in death: Robert, Eulie, Charlie, Jr. and Curtis Grant.

Surviving are: One daughter, Stello (Jimmy) Mitchell of Estill; Sons, Jerome (Sharon) Ling of Garnett; Jesse (Daisy) Ling of Hopewell, Va.; Alexander (Sherry) Ling of Estill; and Kenneth Brown of Garnett; one brother, Jesse (Carolyn) Grant of Scotia; one sister, Willie Mae Ryles of Macon, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Grant Odom and Margaret Grant Smart, both of Estill; 5 aunts, 8 uncles, 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and God-daughter, Tina Marie Whipple.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16 at Hopewell CME Church with burial in the Breller Field Cemetery, Garnett.

Mr. Jonathan Anthony “Tony” Sinclair, of Third Street in Varnville, died Thursday, afternoon, Dec. 15, 2016, in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston.

Mr. Sinclair was born in Hampton County, Jan. 21, 1941, a son of the late Elmore Cape and Blanche Phillips Sinclair. He was a barber, having worked at the Paris Island Recruit Depot from 1960 through 2001. He was a member of Fishers of Men, and Hampton First Christian Church where he served as a deacon.

Surviving are: Daughter, Kimberly Dawn Sinclair of Hampton; Brother, Dwight Hampton Sinclair and wife Mary Ann of Varnville; Granddaughter, Jordan; and his beloved pets: Lola and Cassie.

Visitation was held Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, and the burial following in the Varnville Cemetery.

Miss Cayce Lynn Mayfield of Sandbrier Court in Lexington, S.C., died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016, at her residence.

Miss Mayfield was born in Beaufort, March 21, 1992, a daughter of Grayson William Mayfield III of Walterboro, and Cheasta Lane Scheller of Hampton. A former resident of Hampton, she was a member of the Little Chapter of the Eastern Star. Surviving besides her parents are: Sons: Daniel Thomas Davis IV and Grayson Heath Addy of Lexington; Daughter, Layla Marie Mayfield Ayer of Hampton;  Brothers: Adrian Lane Scheller of Hampton, and Troy Scheller of North Carolina; Sisters: Carrie Marie Mayfield of Hampton, and Stephanie Loming Scheller of North Carolina; Paternal Grandparents: Grayson Mayfield Jr. of Gilbert, and Zora Priester Davis of Jackson; Step Grandmother, Dee Mayfield of Gilbert; Maternal Grandmother, Sharon Wagers Betsell of Hampton, GA; Step Grandfather, Kevin Todd Betsell of Hampton, GA; Maternal Grandfather and Spouse James R. Mr. Murray Eugene “Gene” Rushing of Clarke Avenue in Estill, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at his residence, after an extended illness.

Mr. Rushing was born in Ridgeland, Sept. 1, 1949, a son of the late W. E. “Red” Rushing and Lois Williamson Rushing. He started his career with Mikells International Tractor Company in Estill and started with the Fire Service in January of 1978 until his retirement in March of 2016.  He was a South Carolina Fire Academy Instructor, served as Estill Fire Chief, and was a member and past President of the Lower State Fire Fighters Association.  He was the first Hampton County Fire Chief.  Mr. Rushing was the coordinator with the Hampton County 911 Dispatch System, and was inducted into the South Carolina Fire Fighters Hall of Fame.  He had received the Order of the Crescent from the State of South Carolina, and was a member of the Robertville Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Wife, Joan Mixson Rushing of Estill; Son, Ben Rushing and wife Jennifer of Scotia; Daughters: Rebecca Dyer and husband Chris of Brunson, Regina Page and husband Charlie of North Augusta, and Tricia Stanley and husband Franklin of Allendale; and Grandchildren: Brook, Tyler, Logan, Camden, Emilee, Savannah, and Reid.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 20, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hampton.  The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the Gene Rushing Memorial Fund, 703 Second Street West, Hampton SC 29924.  

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. Dec. 21, 2016, in the Hampton First Baptist Church located at 300 Jackson Avenue East in Hampton, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Services will be conducted by Rev. Teddy Shumpert, and assisted by Chief Carter Jones and Representative William Bowers, with burial in the Union Cemetery in Scotia.  Chief Bruce Kline and Chief Harry Roundtree coordinated the Fire Department Honors.

Mr. George Montague “Monty” Wooten, 60, of Estill, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at his daughter’s residence in Summerville.

The family received friends on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. at the Nixville Church of God of Prophecy, with interment following in the church cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

Born Aug. 6, 1956, in Metter, Georgia, he was a son of the late Henry Montague Wooten and Lemerle Sheppard Wooten.  He was a retired truck driver and will always be remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather who dearly loved his family.

Surviving are his children: Troy Montague Wooten of Fort Knox, Kentucky, Regina Annette Scott of Estill, and Bridget Ann Moseley of Summerville; grandchildren: Bryan Paul Wooten, Rheagan Jackson, Troy Wooten, Jr., Clareese Stenzel, Christian Wooten, Sean Moseley, Karaline Stenzel, Gabriel Scott, Ava Wooten, Alexander Wooten, and Maximus Wooten; great granddaughter, Izabelle Wooten; brother, Randy Wooten of Grays; and sisters: Sally Jo Moore of Hampton and Jackie McBride of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Jeannie Martin Priester, age 83, of Broxton Bridge Road in Ehrhardt, entered into eternal rest on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2016, while surrounded by her loving family in Hospice of Charleston in Mount Pleasant.  She was the loving wife of fifty-seven years to the late Mr. William Leon Priester at the time of his death in 2014.

A daughter of the late James Samuel Martin, Sr. and the late Willie Mae Walling Martin Bowers, she was born March 18, 1933, in Colleton County, having made Ehrhardt her home for the past fifty-six years.  She retired from the United States Postal Service in Bamberg following a long and dedicated career as a clerk in Bamberg, having during her tenure served many of the other surrounding areas.  A longtime member of Ehrhardt Baptist Church, she was a member of the Social Committee and Adult Sunday School Class; as well as having served in many aspects of the church’s work.  Jeannie’s greatest love and priority in life was her family.  She devoted herself to the needs of her husband and children whom she adored.  She was also a great southern cook, who enjoyed canning and was famous in her own way for her German Chocolate Cake.

Surviving are: Mr. and Mrs. Rusty (Paula) Ulmer of Irmo, Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Myra) Crosby of Ruffin, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Janice) Wrightenberry of Bamberg, Mr. and Mrs. William Leon (Julie) Priester, Jr. (Bill) of Bamberg, Mr. and Mrs. Leo (Lynda) Warren of Williams; ten grandchildren, Ryan Ulmer of Iva, Blake Ulmer of Irmo, Mr. and Mrs. Alton (Ashlyn Crosby) Smith of Varnville, Jeremy Crosby of Ruffin, Mr. and Dr. Will (Anna Marie Wrightenberry)Evans of Williams, Rob Wrightenberry of Bamberg, Mr. and Mrs. Dillon (Amber) Walling of Bamberg, Will Priester of Bamberg, Caroline Warren and Connor Warren of Williams; and five great-grandchildren, Luke Smith and Jack Smith of Varnville, Kayleigh Ulmer of Irmo, and Anna Cate and Worth Evans of Williams.  She is also survived by a brother, Ned Martin of Lodge; and three sisters, Gloria Smith of Ehrhardt, Sandy Cook of Hampton, and June Long of Hampton.   She was preceded in death by three siblings, Rosa Lee Fowler, Samuel Martin, and Doris Fralix.

 Mrs. Lois Aline Belger Cook, of Bamberg Highway near Hampton, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016, afternoon in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston.

Mrs. Cook was born in Hampton County, Nov/ 11, 1933, a daughter of the late Aiken and Nora Clifton Belger.  She had worked in the Copper Department at Westinghouse, but spent most of her time as a homemaker and taking care of her grandchildren. She was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church, where she had been active in many church-activities.

Surviving are: Husband, James Robbie Cook of Hampton; Sons: Ricky Cook “Paula” of Early Branch, Chris Cook “Cathy” of Varnville, Andy Cook “Carlene” and Timmy Cook both of Hampton; Sisters: Virginia Bishop of Allendale, Wilma McMillan of Hampton, Veda McMillan of Charleston, and Frances Belger of North Carolina; Grandchildren: Kimberly Sullivan, Brandon and Tiffany Marchyshyn, Brandon and Brittany Cook, Trish Malone, Casey Cook, Megan Davis, Scottie, Anthony, and Caroline Cook; and 14 Great Grandchildren.  Mrs. Cook is predeceased by three brothers, three sisters, and a grandson: Jeremy Altman Cook.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, in the Sandy Run Baptist Church, with burial in the Crocketville Cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Hadwin Hagins of Two Sisters Ferry Road near Estill, died Monday night, Dec. 26, 2016, in the Pruitt Health Care Facility in Estill.

Mrs. Hagins was born March 15, 1942, in Hampton County, a daughter of the late George H. and Emmie Brunson Hadwin.  She had lived in the Lancaster community for many years and retired to her home near Estill.  Mrs. Hagins was a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Surviving are: Husband, Johnny L. Hagins of Lancaster; Son, John Keith Stokes of Estill; Step Son, Steve Hagins of Elgin; Step Daughter, Cindy Hagins of Lancaster; Brothers: Ben Hadwin of Estill and George Hadwin of Hardeeville; Grandchildren: Katie Stokes of Bamberg, and Jennifer Eury of Lancaster; and three Great Grandchildren.  Mrs. Hagins was predeceased by a Grandson, John Kevin Stokes.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 30, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.  

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, in the DeLoach Cemetery near Estill.

Mrs. Helen Gamble Forrester, 99, of Hampton, entered into rest Monday morning, Dec. 26, 2016, at the John Edward Harter Nursing Center in Fairfax.  She was the widow of Mr. Ira Franklin Forrester, Sr.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday morning, Dec. 30, 2016, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Varnville with the Reverend Wallace Wise officiating.  Interment followed in Hampton Cemetery.

Born Dec. 12, 1917, in Jamestown, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David O. Gamble, Sr.  She was a retiree of the Department of Social Services as well as Westinghouse.  She was a founding member of The Lighthouse Church in Hampton.

Surviving are: a son, Frank Forrester, Jr. and his wife Martha “Sissy” Forrester of Summerville; and two daughters, Edith Marie Richards and her husband James Richards of North Augusta, South Carolina and Joyce Forrester Lathrop and her husband Happ Lathrop of Chapin, South Carolina.  There are seven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren that also survive.

Mrs. Hazel Lane Cook of McLeod Road in Walterboro, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2016, in Estill.

Mrs. Cook was born in Dillion, South Carolina, September 26, 1927, a daughter of the late Osborn S. and Melvina Saunders Lane.  She was a homemaker, and a member of the Huggin Oak Church of God.  She had devoted her life to the care of her family, and ministry to her church and community, serving as a prayer warrior.

Surviving are: Son, David Cook and wife Mary of Hampton; Daughters: Mary Louise Drawdy of Hampton, and Pasty Langdale and husband Ricky of Walterboro; 16 Grandchildren; 30 Great Grandchildren; and 31 Great-Great Grandchildren.  Mrs. Cook was predeceased by her Husband: Wilbur Cook, Daughter: Lorene Varnadoe, and Son, Wilbur Cook Jr., as well as many brothers and sisters.

Visitation was held Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to funeral services at 2:00 p.m., in the Spirit of Life Ministries Church in Varnville, located at 235 Chanel Drive in the Frog Hollow Community in Varnville with burial following in the Hampton Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.

Mrs. Beverly Lurlene Phillips Wilson of Charleston, formerly of Hampton, died Tuesday night, Dec. 27, 2016, in the St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Hampton County, Aug. 14, 1935, a daughter of the late Graham Monroe Phillips and Maggie DeLoach Phillips.  She was a former cashier with K-Mart in Ladson, and was a member of the Hampton United Pentecostal Church.

Surviving are Sons: Ervin Harriott and wife Cheryl of Furman, and Hugh Wilson and wife Carla of Monroe, Louisiana; Brothers: Jack Phillips and wife Lynn of Estill, and Donald Monroe Phillips and wife Wendy of Jesup, Georgia; Sister, Lillian Teresa Johnson of Hampton; Daughter in Law, Cathleen Gibson Pierce of Cummings; Grandchildren: Wendy Habersham, Cary Harriott, Amy W. Tapia, and Amber Wilson; and Three Great Grandchildren.  Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by Children: Mark Travis Wynn and Janice Wynn.

Fannie Louise Brown Stone wife of Cambridge Trott Stone, Sr. died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016.

Mrs. Stone was born March 12, 1932, in Sycamore, SC a daughter of the late Eddie E. and Isleen Lyons Brown. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Fannie was a member of Fairfax First Baptist Church where she served as organist, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her husband Cambridge and her family.

Funeral Services were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, at Fairfax First Baptist Church. Interment followed at Fairfax Cemetery. The family received friends following the service at the cemetery.

God saw her getting tired, a cure not meant to be, so he put his arms around her, and whispered “Come with Me.”

Survivors include beside her husband Cambridge are three sons: Cambridge Trott “Trottie” Stone, Jr., Larry Quinton Stone, and Rodney Keith Stone (Donna); one daughter, Thea Angela Stone Coleman; grandchildren: Cambridge Trott “Trey” Stone (Chelsea), Elizabeth Stone Tutterow (Josh), Ashley Lauren Stone, Ransom Alexander “Alex” Coleman, Jr. (Anna), Angela Coleman Strong (John), Amelia Ann Coleman; one sister, Emily B. Rodgers (Thurman); great-grandchildren: Emma Mane Strong, Leila Kate Strong, William Thomas Jones. She was predeceased by her brother, Billy Brown and grandson, William “Billy” Thomas Stone.

Roger Dale Kinard, 72, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Kinard was a native of Colleton County and the son of the late Willis E. Kinard and the late Aurelia Ryan Harvey. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, was a retired construction worker and a member of Fairfax Baptist Church.

The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 28, 2016, at Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC.

Funeral Services were held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at Fairfax First Baptist Church with Pastor James Porter officiating. Interment followed with Military Honors in the Fairfax Cemetery.

Survivors include four daughters: Angela K. Holland (Bobby), Jill K. Topper (Chris), Rhonda K. Evans (Archie) and Crystal G. Kinard (Ronaldo); six Grandchildren: one niece; special friend, Angie Duggan; and the children’s mother, Betty Jean Kinard. He was predeceased by one brother Lewis E. Kinard.

Mrs. Emmie “Lona” Brooks Priester, of Third Street in Hampton, died Thursday morning, Jan. 5, 2017, in the Medical University hospital in Charleston.  She was 95 years old.

Mrs. Priester was born Jul. 25, 1921, at her home in Saluda, a daughter of the late Colie Cleveland Brooks and Martha Anna Berry Brooks.  She attended Indian Creek-Hollywood School, a four room school, from 1st to 11th grade.  Mrs. Priester was a retired First Grade School Teacher who served Hampton County School District 1 for 47 years.  She attended Anderson College for 2 years and later graduated from Columbia College in 1943. She earned her Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina, and was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church.  Mrs. Priester was married for 54 years, to the late W. H. Priester Jr.

Surviving are: Daughter, Susan Priester Howard and husband, John, of Hampton; Daughter in Law, Mary Ann Priester of Ridgeway; Grandchildren: William Doyle Clifton III of Hampton, Christopher Joseph Howard of Bradford, PA, and Michael Patrick Howard of Hampton; Great Grandchildren: Tonya and Liam Clifton; and very dear and special friends: Joann Long and Nickie Clifton.  Mrs. Priester was predeceased by her Husband, William Harrison Priester Jr.; Son, William Harrison Priester III; Brother, Dallas Cleveland Brooks; and Sister, Colie Julian Brooks.

Mrs. Hazel Tuten Peeples, of Abe Trail near Varnville, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2017, at her residence.

Mrs. Peeples was born September 7, 1931, in Hampton County, a daughter of the late LeVan and Iva Peeples Tuten.  She had retired after 40 plus years of service, in the decorative department at Westinghouse Corporation, at the age of 75.  She was a member of the Plant union #3130, loved to travel and was a member of the Nixville Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Son: Harvey “Randy” Peeples, Jr. and wife Jayne of Varnville; Daughter: Shirley P. Shannon and husband Steve of Orange Beach, Alabama; Twin Sister: Doris DeLoach of Varnville; Sister: Lucille Arlidge of Hampton; Son in Law: Arthur Youmans of Varnville; Grandchildren: Melanie McDonald and husband Jason of Charleston, Jason Peeples and wife Amanda of Bluffton, Tom Peeples and wife Stefanie of Varnville, Kevin Youmans and wife Shannon of Hampton, Vicki Terry and husband Chris of Varnville, and Lacy Buzzell and husband Jonathan of Varnville; 17 Great Grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Claude Ashton Manuel, 88, husband of Annie Harvey Manuel died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 in Fairfax, South Carolina.

Claude was born in Sycamore, South Carolina on Aug. 4, 1928, and was the son of the late Asbury C. and Lizzie Mae Mixson Manuel. He was a member of the Fairfax First Baptist Church and an active member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, where he served as treasurer, the current chairman of the board at Water Holidays in Santee, served the town of Fairfax for 17 years as a member of the town council, served in the US Navy on the USS Little Rock from February 1946 – December 1947, performed contract work for Exxon and was a member of the Jaycees and was a Masons.

Claude was a maintenance supervisor for the Allendale Correctional Institute during their early years, served as maintenance supervisor for Scotsman Ice Systems and owned and operated Manuel’s Supply and Equipment for many years before retirement. After retirement he enjoyed many hours in his shop repairing golf carts.

Graveside Funeral Services were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Mrs. Annie Harvey Manuel; a son Larry (Lynn) of Fairfax; a daughter, Claudia (Tim) Medlin of Sumter; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Jean) Ferguson of Fairfax and Mrs. Sherrill (Faye) Cochran; and four grandchildren, Miss Collins Medlin of Salt Lake City, Utah; Miss Ashton Medlin of St. Augustine, Florida; Miss Anissa Manuel of Bluffton; and Miss Claire Manuel of Fairfax.

Marvin “P Nut” Freeman

Mr. Marvin “P Nut” Freeman, of North Railroad Avenue in Brunson, died Monday in the Colleton Regional Medical Center in Walterboro.

Mr. Freeman was born in Hampton County, October 2, 1937 a son of the late Tobe and Rodell Crosby Freeman.  He had retired from the tubing department at Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton with over 30 years of service.

Surviving are: Wife: Hannelore Maria Ehm Freeman of Brunson; Son: Daryl Wayne Freeman of Brunson; Brothers: Gene Freeman and wife Nita of Brunson, Bobby Chesser and wife Maxine of Saluda, and James Arnold Chesser of Florida; Sister: Verl Harrelson and husband Russell of Lexington; Grandchildren: Tabatha Brown and husband Craig of Hampton, and Samantha Freeman of Brunson; and Great Grandchildren: Day Quan, Savannah, and Logan.

Mr. Anthony Duke “Tony” Anderson, of Ellis Street in Hampton, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 12, 1917, at his residence. 

Mr. Anderson was born October 17, 1957, in Ridgeland, a son of Barbara Cornwell Anderson and the late Cleo Eugene Anderson. He was a commercial fisherman in Murrells Inlet since 1975 and was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School.

Surviving besides his mother of Beaufort are: Wife Tracie Shackelford Anderson of Hampton; Daughter, Jodie Smith and husband Allen of Hampton; Brothers: Jonathan Anderson of Beaufort, and Skip Anderson of Douglas Georgia; Sister, Stellena Mumma of Beaufort; and Grandchildren: Everett, Jaylyn, Destin, and Connelly. Mr. Anderson was predeceased by a son, Jamie Mixson.

Mr. Orren David Conder, of Mixons Corner Road near Fairfax, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1917, in the Augusta University Hospital.

Mr. Conder was born July 3, 1936, a son of the late John D. and Felma Andrews Conder.  He retired from Scotsman in Fairfax as a Maintenance Manager, but started his career as a Police Officer in Sanford, North Carolina.  He was an Army Veteran and had served for eight years. He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, and the quiet setting in the rural Fairfax community. 

Surviving are: Wife, Myrtle Emma Williams Conder of Fairfax; Sons: John D. Conder and wife Libby of Heath, Texas, James Conder and wife Sheila of Camden, and Jeffery Conder and wife Chinon of Fairfax; Sister, Donna Flonery of Houston, Texas; six Grandchildren and one Great Grandson. Roberta Wheeler Lindahl, 89, of Morganton, NC passed peacefully from this earth on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, with her younger sons around her sharing family stories and singing hymns.

Mary Roberta was born February 8, 1927, in Carlinville, IL to Hester and Ralph Wheeler. The youngest of a musical family, she graduated from Southern Illinois University in piano performance and physical education, taught elementary school, aquatics and swimming for many years, was a high school music teacher and choral director, and private piano teacher to students of all levels.

Roberta was an accomplished pianist, a devoted mom, an avid baker, bird-watcher, gardener (including heirloom daylilies her brother, Dr. Marshall Wheeler, hybridized), family photo album-keeper, personalized denim pillow-maker, and theatre and concert-goer.

While a young elementary teacher visiting friends in Albuquerque, she met Don Lindahl of Gallup, NM on a blind date. They were married 55 years and will be lovingly remembered by friends and family: her sister Lois Sanders of Perryville, MO; children Andrew & Stacey Lindahl of Magnolia, MS, Mary Lindahl McMahon of Hagerstown, MD, Donald Jr. ‘Lindy’ Lindahl & Dr. Patricia Smart of Greenville, SC, Eric & Robin Allison Lindahl of Lawrence, MA; grandchildren Patrick, Kathleen, Rory and Clare McMahon of Maryland; her nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will gather with friends on May 6, 2017, in Morganton, NC to celebrate her life.

Bobby O’Neal Smith, 79, of Grays, SC passed away on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at his residence after an extended illness.  Born on July 10, 1937, in Grays, SC, he was the son of late H. O’Neal Smith and Myrtis Perry Smith.
Mr. Smith served as a magistrate for Jasper County for twenty-nine years.  He retired as a car dealer after owning Smith’s Auto Sales Inc. for thirty-seven years. He was also an auctioneer and enjoyed raising cattle. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret F. Smith of Grays; two daughters: Janet Carter and husband Brian of Barnwell and Ann Margaret Smith of Grays; grandson, Jason Lee Carter.  He is also survived by three sisters: Irene Woodard and Inez McMillan of Walterboro and Vera Malphrus of Grays.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family received friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church until the hour of the service.  Memorials may be made in his memory to: Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 4611 Beaver Dam Road, Ridgeland, SC  29936.

Connie Ann Stanley Winn, 70, was born on Oct. 25, 1946, to the late Harry and Mattie Stanley in Varnville, South Carolina.  Connie passed away on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, after an extended illness.

Connie is survived by her husband, Charlie Elliott Winn of Hampton, SC; her daughters; Gina Renee Winn Graham of Hampton, SC, and Connie Angela “Angie” Winn Hickerson (Anthony) of Brunson, SC; her grandchildren: Renee Ann Winn Crenshaw (Barry) of Hampton, SC, Rachel Katherine Hickerson Millard (Joshua) of Aiken, SC, Rebekah Loren Hickerson of Lexington, SC, Johnathan Kendall Graham (Destiney) of Beaufort, SC, and Treynor Lee Graham of Hampton, SC; her great grandchildren: Luke Elliott Crenshaw, Alexis Mackenzie Crenshaw and Abigail Kendall Graham; her sisters Louise Long of Nixville, SC and Betty All (James) of Sycamore, SC and a host of nieces and nephews.  Connie was predeceased by her brothers: Jimmy Stanley, Billy Stanley, Tony Stanley and Dennis Stanley, all of Hampton, SC.

Connie married Charlie on Aug. 30, 1963.  She dedicated her life to Jehovah, along with her husband and her mother on Sept. 19, 1969, and was a faithful member of the Hampton Congregation of Jehovah‘s Witnesses until her health failed her.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and she loved every minute that she spent with her family. She was affectionately known as “Mema” to her kids and grandkids, and all of their friends. She will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew her.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hampton.  Interment followed in Sandy Run Cemetery.

Mrs. Shelley Linnean Spake of Chattanooga, TN formerly of Varnville, SC died Sunday morning, Jan. 22, 2017, at her residence.

Mrs. Spake was born in Charleston, SC, February 5, 1971, a daughter of the late Harold Walter and Mary Olga Tuten Linnean II.  She graduated from the College of Charleston in 1993 where she was a member of Alpha Delta Phi Sorority. She had taught school for 21 years, primarily at the Cherokee Ridge Elementary School located in Chickamauga, GA as a Kindergarten Teacher.  She was honored as the Teacher of the Year in 2006, and was a member of the Concord Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Her husband, William “Bill” Henry Spake of Chattanooga; Daughters: Whitney Ashton Spake, Courtney Alyssa Spake, and Ashlyn Noelle Spake, all of the home; Brother: Col. Harold W. Mr. Wilbert Randolph “Doc” Gooding, of Varnville, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 20107, morning in the Medical University hospital in Charleston.       

Mr. Gooding was born in Hampton County, March 26, 1932, a son of the late Horace and Caroline Terry Gooding. He had retired from Westinghouse Corp in Hampton, and was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist church. He had served in the Marines during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge in Hampton, and the Jahab Shrine Club. He also was active with the American Legion Post #108 in Hampton.

Surviving are: His wife: Mrs. Peggy Marie Cooke Gooding of Varnville; Daughter: Cheryl G. Long and husband Tommy of Ruffin; Sister, Terry G. Thomas and husband Gary of Highwood, Illinois; Grandchildren: Brad Long and wife Krystal, Randall Long and Taylor Long; and Great Grandchildren: Braylyn and Brynlee Long. Mr. Gooding was predeceased by a sister: Reba Mae Zahler.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 in the Sandy Run Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Rhyan Ashcraft and Elder Robert Dobson, with burial in the Rivers Cemetery near Brunson with Masonic Rites and Military Honors.

Mrs. Annie Mae Crapse Zorn of Estill, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, in the Pruitt Health Care Facility in Estill.

Mrs. Zorn was born in Hampton County, July 15, 1918, a daughter of the late Paul Jefferson Crapse and Mae Bassett Crapse.  She had retired from Platts Fads and Fashions clothing store in Estill, and was a lifelong member of the Furman Baptist Church.  She was the widow of Richard M. Zorn.

Surviving are: Sister in Laws: Dot Jackson Crapse of Sumter, and Pat Crapse of Charlotte; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 02, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Mr. Roderick Myron “Rodney” Crapse of Camp Cornbread Road near Estill, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 31, 2017, at home, after a brief illness.

Mr. Crapse was born in Hampton County, Jul. 29, 1965, a son of Linda Jarrell Crapse and the late Myron Crapse.  He had retired from Universal Steel as a sales assistant, enjoyed skeet shooting, working on cars, and as a hobby, using his metal detector.

Surviving besides his Mother of Estill are: Wife, Marianne Davis Crapse of Hampton; Sons: Brandon Crapse and wife Jamie of Jackson, and Chad Crapse and wife Christina of Vacaville, CA; Daughter, Alyssa Crapse of Hampton; Sister, Tracy Nix and fiancé Fred of Williston, FL; Grandchild, Axl Crapse; and three special Nephews: Joshua, Miles, and Nathan.

Mr. Bernard Everette Simmons, of Country Club Road in Hampton, died early Thursday morning, Feb. 2, 2017, in Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Mr. Simmons was born in Jasper County, October 5, 1936, a son of the late Fornam and Nora Lee Tindal Simmons.  He had retired as a Maintenance Supervisor with the Westinghouse Corp in Hampton, and also operated Simmons Millwright and Construction Company in Hampton.  He was a member of Pine Level Baptist Church near Grays.

Surviving are: Wife, Judy Herndon Simmons of Hampton; Son, Michael E. Simmons of Hampton; Daughter, Sherry Ann Mixson of Grays; Brothers: Irvin and Jimmy Simmons of Grays; Sister, Linda Hawkins of Grays; Grandchildren: Brian and Jennifer Mixson, Rebecca Blocker, and Michael and Christopher Simmons; and Great Grandchildren: Hunter, Liam, and Lucas Blocker.

Mrs. Betty Jean Gooding Champion died Thursday morning, Feb. 2, 2017, in the Colleton Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Champion was born in Allendale County, October 13, 1942, a daughter of the late Alfred Gooding and Iva Lee Crosby.  She had spent most of her life in the Hampton County area and was a homemaker.  She was the widow of Leon Champion.

Surviving are: Sons: Clyde Richard Stanley of Varnville and Alfred Gene Jarrell of Estill; Daughters: Charlene Jarrell Ashworth of Brunson and Haley Angela Jarrell of Hampton; and one Sister, Mary Linder of Charleston.  There are 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Champion was predeceased by Brothers: Alfred Gooding Jr. and James Thomas Brown; and Sister: Desser Lee Gooding.

Mr. Jeffrey Wade Ferguson of Atlanta, formerly of Hampton, died Friday morning, Feb. 3, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Ferguson was born in Rock Hill, April 9, 1964, a son of Samuel Wade and Julia Messex Ferguson.  He was an area manager with Universal Storage Group in Atlanta, and also had worked with different automobile dealerships throughout his career.  He was a member of Varnville First Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his parents of Hampton are: Sister, Sandy Lindt of Morrisville, NC; Niece, Courtney Lindt and Nephew, Jason Lindt and a partner, Jason McLain.  Mr. Ferguson was predeceased by a sister, Janet Lynn Ferguson and a niece, Kristen Lindt.

Visitation was Monday, Feb. 6, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton, SC and Tuesday morning, Feb 7, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church prior to services. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Varnville First Baptist Church, with burial following in the Swallow Savannah Cemetery in Allendale.

Mr. William Bill Johnson of Brunson, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, in the Veterans Hospital in Augusta, G.A. after an extended illness.

Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 28, 1935, in Hampton County, a son of the late James Edward (J. E.) Johnson and Deborah Lucille Dobson Johnson.  He had retired from Scotsman after 25 years in the Maintenance Department, and also farmed.  He was an Air Force Veteran, enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR Racing.  He was a member of the Luray Christian Church.

Surviving are:  His former wife and dear friend, Jeanette Shuman of Grays; sons: Bryan Johnson and wife Carla of Early Branch, and Eric Johnson and wife Gwen of Brunson; sister, Lucille Kinard of Brunson; Grandsons: Jake, Eran and Trevor Johnson, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. Feb. 22, 2017, in the Luray Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Noel Cooper and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton.

Col. Newton Walker (Dub) Terry, III (USAF Retired) of Arlington, T.X. died on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, after an extended illness. Husband, Father, Brother, Granddaddy, Uncle and Friend… most of all, Child of God. He loved the same woman for more than 46 years, with whom he has shared his love of Christ.

He is survived by his love, Marilyn; his two children: Nathan Terry (Beth) and Mikela Batts (Gary); six beautiful grandchildren: Jack, George, Garen, Sara, Micah and Gabe; three sisters: Judy Smith (Harry), Joan Brown (Robert), and Chris Eberl (Mark); and one brother, Marion Terry (JoAnne) and more family and friends than you can count. Meeting him at the gates of Heaven are his parents, Newton and Sara Terry. Blessed was this man!

Mr. James Earle Youmans, 77, of Varnville, passed away Friday, Feb, 17, 2017, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at Lawtonville Baptist Church.

Born Oct. 24, 1939, in Estill, he was a son of the late Albert E. Youmans and Martha Reid Pauls.  He served his country in the United States Air Force and then retired from the United States Navy.  After retiring from the military, he worked for 17 years for Acme Engineering in Champlain, New York. He was a member of Lawtonville Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and talking.

Surviving are: his wife, Elaine T. Karen R. Newton of Estill, S.C., entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital in Savannah, G.A.

Karen’s journey in this world began on Sept. 15, 1962, in Clyo, G.A. to Elder and Mrs. Cecil Andrews. She was reared in a spiritual home along with her nine siblings. She was educated in the Effingham County School System. In her youthful years, she was a member of Faith Deliverance Tabernacle, Inc.

In 1983, Karen married her love, Willie James Newton. In this glorious union of 33 years, they were blessed with two children: Jeffrey and Jessica. Later, she joined the First Thankful Fillibranch Baptist church as a true Christian and woman of Faith. She served on the gospel choir, kitchen committee, and in any other capacities that were asked of her.

Karen’s love for children proved her calling as she became employed with Hampton County School District 2 and continued to work for 31-years until her health failed. During her tenure at HSD2, she cultivated many friendships and helped shape many youthful lives.

A great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend with a contagious laughter, Karen loved family, friends and laughter. Karen’s generous heart touched many lives. She was a woman that never bit her tongue to tell you her feelings about anything. Her no-nonsense, keeping it real, presence and personality will be greatly missed.

Karen was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Newton and her sister, Marcia Warren.

Sister Flossie Mae Buckner Moore departed life on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017. She began her life journey on Oct. 3, 1932.  She was one of two siblings born to Randolph Buckner and the late Louise Capers Buckner.

She was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County, S.C.  At an early age, Flossie joined Toby United Methodist Church, Islandton, S.C.  Upon relocating to New York, she joined The Church of Our Lord under the leadership of Evangelist Hallie Mae Joshua and later became a member of Gospel Light C.O.L.J.C., both located in Brooklyn, N.Y.  Sister Moore joined St. John Baptist Church upon her return to S.C.  At St. John Baptist Church, she was a faithful member of the Women’s Ministry, The Missionary Society, the Kitchen Aide Committee, the Gospel and Senior Choir.  She enjoyed praising God through songs and playing the tambourine.

Flossie was united in marriage to the late Herbert Lee Moore, Sr. on Jun. 13, 1953.  To this union of fifty-six years, God blessed them with six children.

Flossie was employed part-time for various businesses; however, her passion was being at home with her children.  She never met a stranger and greeted everyone with her infectious smile. It was never unusual for her to strike up a conversation with anyone on any aisle at the grocer.  Flossie enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, preparing meals, and baking for her family and friends.  She was compassionate, loving and caring to one and all.

Her husband, Herbert, Sr., preceded her in death on Apr. 11, 2010.  Also preceding her in death were (4) brothers-in-law: John Raymond, Lewis and Jessie Moore, and Alfonzo Harrison; and (2) sisters-in-law: Sarah Holmes and Margie Romey.

Frances Rivers Hooker Bennett, 94, formerly of Hampton, S.C., and widow of the late F. J. Hooker, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, on the Isle of Palms. Her Funeral Service was held Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, in the Hampton First Baptist Church, 300 Jackson Avenue East, Hampton, S.C. at 12:00 pm. Interment followed in Hampton Cemetery. Frances was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Hampton, S.C., daughter of the late Rufus R. Rivers and Lenora Phillips Rivers. She spent most of her life in Hampton County and was a life-long member of Hampton First Baptist Church. After graduating from Hampton High School, her working career began as a bookkeeper at the Ford dealership in Hampton and later as a bookkeeper at Brunson Pontiac-Cadillac dealership in Hampton for a number of years. She became a partner in the operation of Elm Street Auto Parts and retired in her 70's from Elm Street Auto Parts after many years in the business.

Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her son, Gerald Jerome Hooker. She is survived by two daughters, Katheryn Hooker Johnson (Gerald) of Isle Of Palms, S.C., and June Hooker Bilka (Jimmy) of Hampton, S.C.; her brother, Leslie Rivers of Hampton, S.C.; her daughter-in-law, Opal Jean Hooker of Aiken, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Michelle Hooker Caveness (Bryant) of Kingsport, T.N., Craig Hooker (Claudia) of Indian Land, S.C., Sarah Hooker Bordon (Brent) of Kingsport, T.N., Casandra Johnson Bell (Jimmy) of Gray Court, S.C., Carl Johnson of Isle of Palms, S.C., LTC Cayton Johnson and LTC Robin Johnson of Ft. Mrs. Patty Wingler Massey of Cain Street in Hampton, S.C. died Monday evening, Feb. 27, 2017, at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Massey was born in Hampton County, Oct. 17, 1967, a daughter of Roy Reece Wingler and the late Shirley Nix Wingler. She was a registered nurse and worked in the Lowcountry area hospitals, as well as a charge nurse in the Allendale, operating room nurse at Hampton Regional, and also was a home health nurse. She was a member of the Brunson Baptist Church.

Mr. Billy Gresham Henderson of Pine Street in Varnville, died early Friday morning, Mar. 3, 2017, A in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston after a brief Illness.

Mr. Henderson was born in Chesnee, S.C. April 25, 1934, a son of the late Daniel Gresham Henderson and Irene Crowley Henderson. He had served as a Union Business Agent with the Carpenters Union, # 3130 at the Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton, and Embler Door Company Union # 3135 in Varnville. He had retired as a Mediator with the South Carolina Department of Labor.  Billy spent several of his early years at the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, and continued to support it his entire life and was a member of the Alumni Association. He had served on the Varnville Town Council and was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Sand Hill Baptist Church, and a former Boy Scout Leader.

Surviving are:  His wife, Dot W. Henderson of Varnville; Son, Danny Henderson and wife Suzie of Ridgeland; Step Daughter, Susan Thomas and husband Stefan of Hampton; and Step Son, Roy Walls of Summerville; Grandchildren: Francie H. James and husband Ennis of Charleston, Janet Carra Henderson of Charleston, and Katy H. Harold and husband Fred of Dayton, Ohio; two great grandchildren: Tanner Sadie James and Sawyer Ennis James; and a Step Grandchild, Colby Thomas. Mr. Henderson was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Frances Long Henderson and his son, Joe Henderson.

Ruby Crews Freeman

 

Mrs. Ruby Crews Freeman of Charleston Highway near Hampton, died Sunday afternoon at her residence.

Mrs. Freeman was born in Hampton, November 18, 1921, a daughter of the late George Tillman Crews and Ollie Nix Crews.  She was a Homemaker and had been a member of the Order of The Eastern Star.  She was a member of the St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church in Hampton.

Surviving are:  Son:  Earl Freeman and wife Linda of Hampton;  Sister:  Louise “Coot” Griffin of Pollard, Arkansas;  Brother:  Dick Polk and wife Betty of Hampton;  Grandchildren:  Shari Manders and husband David of Beech Island, Lloyd Freeman Jr. and wife Sabrina of Graniteville, and Jamie Freeman of Baltimore, Maryland;  Six Great Grandchildren and Three Great Great Grandchildren, and daughter-in-law Doris Freeman of Hampton.  Mrs. Freeman was predeceased by her husband, James Earl Freeman Sr. and her son, Lloyd Freeman.

Funeral services will be 3 P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home conducted by Elder Robert Dobson, with burial in the Rivers Cemetery.

Hubert “Skeet” Fields, 77, of Salisbury, MD passed away on March 18, 2017 at his home.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 24, from 6-8 PM at the Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home; 1618 N West Rd, Salisbury, MD 21801. On Saturday, March 25, 2017, a wake will be held at noon and funeral to follow at 1 PM at St. James AME Zion Church, located at 521 Mack Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21801. An interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens; 27260 Ocean Gateway, Hebron, MD 21830.

Hubert was born February 22, 1940 in Varnville, South Carolina to Hulie and Catherine (Johnson) Fields, the eldest of 12 children. In 1957, along with his family, he relocated to Allen, MD and later Fruitland, MD.

Hubert worked tirelessly to support his family, holding many jobs, but was notably employed by The Campbell Soup Company, then served his community as a Deputy in the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Department, and finally at Dresser Wayne Industries, from where he retired after 37 years.

In his service as a Sheriff's Deputy, he received many accolades for his nature and the way in which he dealt with everyone.  A highlight of his career was coordinating security for Martin Luther King Sr.'s visit to Salisbury. As a Prince Hall Freemason, he exemplified his duty to God, his neighbor, and himself both in and outside of his lodge, Lamach Lodge # 30.

In his family life, he stressed commitment to family, which motivated his many trips back home to South Carolina for family reunions. He spent those visits catching up with his cousins, listening to Blues and sharing memories of his childhood. 

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janice L. Fields, three sons; Tony Dennis (Lisa), Lamont Fields, and Carlos Fields. Also an aunt, Margaret Major (Adam), three brothers; John Fields (Gwynn), Horace Fields (Wanda), and James Fields, (Valarie), five sisters, Earline Fuller of Glen Burnie, MD, Shirley Fields of Hanover, MD, Carolyn Cauley (Larry) of Temple Hills, MD, Christine Elzy (Brian), and Thelma Flamer (Derrick) of Bowie, MD.  Also three grandchildren, Erin Dennis, Brandon Dennis, and Caira Fields, one great-grand child, Skylar Fields, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hulie and Catherine Fields, his brother Frank Fields, his grand-daughter, April J Fields.

 

Mrs. Lucy Nell Rivers Altman of Prince William Road near Brunson, S.C., died Wednesday morning, Mar. 15, 2017, at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Altman was born in Hampton County, May 23, 1932, a daughter of the late William Hursey Rivers and Mary Rosella Phillips Rivers.  She had retired from the Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton as an Inspector, and was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Son, Woodrow Altman of Brunson; Daughter, Sharon Altman Wilson of Brunson; Sisters: Bobbie Huber of Salinas, California, and Libbie Sanford of Hampton; Grandchildren: David Wilson of Brunson, Jamie Sauls of Barnwell, Jason Wilson of Brunson, Tim Sauls of Brunson and Bobby Sauls of Barnwell; and six great grandchildren.

Mr. Joseph D. “Joe” Sharpe of Mt. Pleasant, died Sunday afternoon, Mar. 19, 2017, at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. Sharpe was born in Germany, March 27, 1942, a son of the late Barney and Martha Konig Sharpe. He had retired after 26 years with C.E.S.C.O. Safety Equipment Company and was a member of the Sand Hill Baptist Church in Varnville.

Surviving are: His wife, Nancy Mixon Sharpe of Mt. Pleasant;  Sons: Joseph D. Sharpe, Jr. of Fort Mill, Michael H. Sharpe of Varnville, Gregory W. Sharpe of Folly Beach and Christopher O. Sharpe and wife Jennifer of Charlotte; Sisters: Renate Turner of Gastonia, and Nancy Loadholt of Varnville; and a granddaughter, Anderson Reese Sharpe.

Michael Herman Nix, age 67, died on Monday, Mar. 20, 2017, at Trinity Hospital in Augusta, G.A., after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mike was born in Orangeburg, S.C., to Herman and Dot (Chassereau) Nix and was the oldest of four children, and the only son. After graduating from Wade Hampton High School in Varnville, S.C., he attended the Nashville Auto-Diesel College. He worked as a mechanic until his love of horses, a love shared with his father, led him to the raising and training of American Quarter Horses. He had a special touch with horses and enjoyed success in the arena. Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by a daughter, Loren (Doug) Farquhar, and a son, Wesley (Kayla) Nix, and two grandsons: Logan and Ryker Nix. He is also survived by his sisters: Kathleen Nix, Sandra Nix, Barbara (Bob) Wilson, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Hopewell First Baptist Church in Varnville, S.C. on Thursday, March 23, at 2:00 p.m.

Mrs. Deborah Esther Roberts Jordan of Varnville, died Tuesday night, Mar. 21, 2017, in the Pruitt Health Care Facility in Estill.

Mrs. Jordan was born in Hampton County, April 28, 1952, a daughter of the late William James Roberts and Virginia Gray Roberts. She had worked in the Respiratory Department as a Nurse and was a member of the Beaufort Baptist Church.

Surviving are: Sons: Tyler and Mason Jordan of Varnville, and Nate Odom of San Antonio, Texas; Brother, Jim Roberts of Beaufort; and Sisters: Belinda Prim of Beaufort, and Cindy Neuhierl of Hardeeville; Granddaughters: Elizabeth Leak, Tayler and Kylee Jordan.

Mrs. Jordan was predeceased by a sister, Annette Jordan.

Nancy Ann McNeal Brown, 72, Columbia, S.C., went to be with the Lord Saturday, Mar. 25, 2017.
She was born in Wilmington, N.C. on April 1, 1944, to the late H. Thomas and A. Nadine McNeal. She is survived by her spouse of 40 years, Terry C. Brown; children, Heather and Jamie Williams and Chris and Beth Brown; grandchildren, Teri Joy, Ann Louise, Joah McNeal and Adelaide Noel; siblings, Royce and Willene McNeal, Randall and Thu Van McNeal, Reggie and Cathy McNeal, and Patricia and Gene Price; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

She grew up in Gainesville, Georgia. She was a secretary in Columbia for several years before moving to Fort Worth, Texas to serve as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Music at Southwestern Seminary. She then lived in Hampton, S.C. for 27 years where she worked for Hampton School District One. She was the hand bell director and organist at FBC Hampton where her husband was Minister of Music and Education. They retired in Columbia.

The celebration of Nancy's life was held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 1:30 p.m., followed by a family visitation.

Mary Catherine Varhola arrived on this earth on Aug. 30, 1943, in Flatwoods, Pennsylvania. She passed away Sunday, Mar. 26, 2017, at Memorial Health Center in Savannah, Georgia, surrounded by those whom she loved. Mary is pre-deceased by her parents, Nick and Freda Shaffer and her siblings, Elizabeth Barnes, Patricia Bozek and Shirley Baldwin.

Surviving are: Husband, Eugene Varhola of Early Branch; Daughter, Susan Sutton (Tim) of Varnville; Son, Richard Varhola; Grandchildren: Katelyn, Torianne and Timothy Sutton, Austin Mixson and Joshua Varhola; Brother, Ronald Shaffer and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary traversed the U.S. with her devoted and loving husband, Eugene, and later with her two children, Richard and Susan. They came to Early Branch in July 1986 and remained there until her death. She was a feisty yet compassionate woman who won over the hearts of many. She was an avid Bible reader and loved studying God’s Word. She was a jack of all trades but first and foremost, she was a mother. Her children brought five beautiful grandchildren into her life who she loved immensely and doted on consistently. At age 72 she had truly lived her life to the fullest and her memory still lives on through her loved ones. Granny will be thoroughly missed.

Evangelist Vionnia Adams

VARNVILLE - Evangelist Vionnia Adams, the beloved daughter of the late Deacon Jasper Dunbar and Mrs. Maggie Ree Williams Dunbar was born April 3, 1938 in Varnville, Hampton County, SC.

On Wednesday morning, April 5, 2017, at Medical University Hospital, Charleston, SC, Vionnia’s Maker called her from earthly toils to rest.  Even as our family grieve, we humbly say, Amen.

At an early age, “Vionnia” confessed Christ as Lord and Savior and became a baptized member of Zion Fair Baptist Church, Varnville, SC.

Evangelist Vionnia Adams was educated in the public schools of Hampton County, SC, a graduate of the former North District Training School, Varnville, SC Upon graduation, she relocated to Brooklyn, NY.  In New York, “Vionnia” attended schools of higher learning.  She became gainfully employed in the education industry, assisting in educating children with learning disabilities.

Evangelist Adams, while in New York, met her soul mate and united in marriage to the late Deacon James Adams, Sr.  The Lord blessed this union with two children.  She continued her zeal for God and became a member of All People Church Apostolic Faith, NY.  It was there that she was called into ministry as an Evangelist.

After the death of her mother and the declining health of her father, Evangelist Vionnia Adams retired from work and returned to her native community of Camp Branch, South Carolina to assist in the care of her father.   She restored her membership to Zion Fair Baptist Church, Varnville, SC.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents:  Her husband, Deacon James Adams, Sr., A daughter, Toni Brown; A brother, Vern Dunbar; and a sister, Maggie D. Williams.

To mourn her home going and cherish the time we had are: (2) Sons: Smoloskey (Ella Mae) Dunbar, Varnville, S. Mr. Harford Billy Corbin of Pocotaligo Road, near Varnville, died Wednesday, Apr. 5, 2017, at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. Corbin was born in Pritchardville (Jasper County) January 6, 1927, a son of the late William Edward Corbin and Florence Isabelle Hall Corbin. He had retired from the Fruit of The Loom Company in Lexington, and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.  He had attended Sand Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are: His wife, Elizabeth Jean Mixson Corbin of Varnville; One son, Tyrone Corbin and wife Jennifer of Varnville; and grandchildren: Matthew Tyler Corbin, Allison Elizabeth Faye Corbin and John Bryson Harford Corbin.

Mr. Corbin was pre-deceased by nine brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Mell Cook Hiers of Allendale, died Thursday afternoon, Apr. 06, 2017, at the Harter Nursing Facility in Fairfax after an extended illness.

Mrs. Hiers was born September 18, 1934, in Colleton County, a daughter of the late Herbert and Doris Hoover Cook. She had retired from the South Carolina Department of Social Services and worked with special needs children. She had been a member of the Allendale Garden Club, and was a member of the Allendale First Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Will Rogers Hiers.

Deacon Avery Clayton Thompson, Sr.

 

YEMASSEE - Deacon Avery Clayton Thompson, Sr. was born on September 2, 1956 in Brooklyn New York to Elder Robert Arnell Thompson, Jr. and Lady Ruby Alexander Thompson. During his early days, he attended P.S. 219 in Brooklyn, NY. Also, he worshiped at Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ, where he was active in the youth and music ministry. 

As a teenager, he relocated to South Carolina, where he graduated from Wade Hampton High School and worshiped at Greater Harvest Church of God in Christ. While a student at Wade Hampton, he was an avid basketball player receiving numerous awards including induction to the Hall of Fame. He will always be remembered as the first commissioner of the Hampton County Junior Hornets Youth basketball program. Avery also possessed a passion for fishing, but his award-wining catch would include: red breast, bream, bass. 

Avery loved music; singing, training voices, and especially playing the lead guitar. As a youth, Avery, along with several male cousins, formed a group at Mt. Sinia COGIC called “House Wrecking Highlights” in which he led many of the songs. In his late teens, he sang and recorded with The Soul Survivors. Also, he played his guitar and sang for several churches including churches across the nation.

He was united in holy matrimony to the former Verta Mae Grant on July 4, 1975. He was a medic in the United State Army and served the South Carolina National Guard. This Union was blessed with four children. 
During his later years, while living in Maryland, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and served as a faithful deacon, musician and sound technician at New Bethel Church of God in Christ in Washington D.C. Avery loved people and especially his family. He loved his children and grandchildren with much affection and was pleased with all of their accomplishments. He had a musical bond with his siblings and they had much in common. 

On Monday morning April 3, 2017, God called Avery from labor to reward at his residence surrounded by his loving family. 

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Evangelist Verta Mae Thompson, of 42 years; loving parents, Pastor Robert Arnell and Lady Ruby Thompson of Early Branch, South Carolina; one daughter, Stephanie (Stacy) Frazier of Early Branch, SC; three sons, Avery Clayton (Elizabeth) Thompson, Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina, Lee Alexander Thompson of Washington, DC and Cedric John Thompson of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren, Stacia, Cameron, Zier, Layla, Avery, III, Zhamira and Devin; two brothers, Alvin Thompson of Summerville, SC and Pastors Robert Arnell and Danita Thompson, III of Columbus, NJ; one loving sister, Minister Robin (Elder Earnest) Wright of Ridgeland, SC; sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta (Jimmy) Mixson, Brenda Faye Gordon, Mary (James) Collins of Varnville, SC amd Lola Robinson of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; loving aunts, Thelma Sexton and Virgie Evans of Brooklyn, NY, Juanita (Eddie) Maldon of California and Rose Mae Martinez of Brooklyn, New York; Annie Virginia Rivers, Annette Grant, Verna Grant, and Mary Grant; uncles, Clarence Thompson of Early Branch, SC; Willie Grant, and Johnny Robert Haynes, and a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.

Jesse Washington Bennett

 

Mr. Jesse Washington Bennett, Jr., aged 93, died peacefully on April 18, 2017, at the Ridgeland Nursing Center in Ridgeland, SC after a brief illness.  He was born July 7, 1923 in Estill, South Carolina, the son of Jesse Washington Bennett, Sr., and Ada Pulaski Bennett.  Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian (“Pinkie”) Reeves Bennett in 2011, and by an infant grandson, Matthew Reeves Bennett in 2001.  He was a graduate of Estill High School and attended electronics school in Moline, Illinois.  Mr. Bennett was a Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, serving in the United States and in Europe, where his unit’s duty was in combat airplane radio maintenance.

 After the war, Mr. Bennett returned home to Estill, where he operated a radio and television repair shop for over 20 years.  He also worked for Wholesale Radio and Supply Co., in Charleston, and taught electricity and electronics at Trident Technical College in Charleston.  For over 20 years before his retirement, Mr. Bennett worked as a Field Engineer for South Carolina Educational Television.  His hobbies included fishing, reading, and woodworking.  Mr. Bennett was a member of Lawtonville Baptist Church and a member and Past Worshipful Master of Sunset Masonic Lodge No. 331 in Estill.

He is survived by his son, Charles Stephen Bennett, and his daughter in law, Bonnie Kinard Bennett, of Ridgeland; by three grandsons:  Michael Stephen Bennett of Salt Lake City, Utah;  John Carlton Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia;  Peyton Kinard Bennett of Ridgeland;  and by one granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Bennett of Ridgeland.  He is also survived by his two nieces and one nephew, Sharon Reeves Meeks of Peachland, North Carolina, Paula Reeves Feasel of Richmond, Virginia, and Curtis Victor Reeves of Richmond, Virginia, and by his cousins from Bamberg, South Carolina:  Mr. Billy Mixon, Jimmy Mixon, Alice Mixon Rice, and Michael Mixon.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 20th, at 11 AM in the Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.  The family will receive friends following the service at the Cemetery.

 The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Lawtonville Cemetery Association, Post Office Box 200, Estill, South Carolina 29918.

 

Kenneth Leland Sutton

 

Mr. Kenneth Leland Sutton of Jarrell Street in Hampton, died Saturday night at his residence after an extended illness.

 Mr. Sutton was born in Savannah, Georgia, June 26, 1944, a son of the late Archie Vilus Sutton and Mary Hortense Cox Sutton.  He was the owner and operator of Hampton Glass and had served in the Hampton National Guard Unit.  He enjoyed Fishing and Playing Cards.

 Surviving are:  Two sons:  Kenneth Adam Sutton of Hampton and Shane Sutton of Aiken;  Daughter:  Dee Dee Sutton Jarrell and husband Ron of Estill;  Sister:  Glenda Stone and husband Bobby of Ridgeland;  Grandchildren:  Brandon, Kimberly and Adelyn Sutton, Windee Hill and Josee Nettles.  The family would like to give special thanks to Vickie Brown, Rebecca Jackson and Melanie McAlhaney.

 

Mr. Sutton was predeceased by a daughter:  Wendy Sutton, 4 brothers and 1 sister. 

 Funeral services will be 4 P.M. Monday in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Jeff Sutton, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

James Oscar Rowell, 65, of Varnville, SC passed away Friday, Apr. 14, 2017, at his home.

Mr. Rowell was born Jul. 17, 1951, in Hampton, SC to the late Harold J. Rowell and Mary Lee Peeples Rowell. He was an auto and tractor mechanic for North End Tractor and Smith’s Auto Body. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Cypress Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Rowell is survived by his son, James Aaron Rowell of Varnville; special friends, Beverly Schrewseuberry, Donnie and Vickie Smith, and Debra Rhoden; brothers, Wayne Rowell of Allendale, SC and Robert J. Mr. Byrnes Smith, 73, of Brunson, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 3 pm, Friday, April 21, 2017 at First Christian Church of Hampton.  Interment followed in Hampton Cemetery.

Born January 29, 1944 in Grays, he was a son of the late Reese Smith and Viola Wooten Smith.  He retired as a treater operator from Nevamar.  He was a faithful member of First Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon.  Byrnes never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone.  He was a giving and caring person who dearly loved his family and his friends.

Surviving are: his wife of 52 years, Jewell Laird Smith; children, Celia Smith of Varnville and Joseph Gregory Smith of Estill; grandchildren, Tabitha, Cassie, Lauren, Cheyenne, Chance, Jesse and Nick; great grandchildren, Landon, Rylan, Jayden, and Ralenn; brothers, Mac Smith and Reese Smith, both of Hampton; sisters, Gladys Miller of Aiken, Carolyn Cook of Cummings, Betty Cook of Brunson, and Nina Gray of Brunson; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.  He was preceded in death by a son, Byrnes Anthony Smith; and a brother, Jesse David Smith.

Cassandra Monique Grant was born to Bobby and Mammie Grant on Sept. 28, 1982, in Hampton Regional Medical Hospital.

Cassie, as she affectionately called, ascended into her heavenly home on Friday, Mar. 24, 2017, at Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, South Carolina.
At an early age, she was christened as an infant at Emmanuel RMUE Church Gifford, South Carolina. Later in life, Cassandra became a baptized member of Huspah Baptist Church, Hampton, South Carolina.
Cassie, as she was affectionately called, was a 2000 graduate of Wade Hampton High School. She furthered her studies at University of South Carolina "Salkehatchie", and graduated in 2002.
Cassie was a former employee at Sun City as a Security Guard. As time passed she became employed at Wal-Mart until her health began to fail.
Cassie was called into eternal rest on Friday, March 24, 2017, at Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, South Carolina.

Deaconess Betty Evelyn Major, daughter of the late Tucker Abraham Gordon and Edna J. Gordon, was born Aug. 3, 1927, in Furman, Hampton County, South Carolina. She was called from earth’s toils to rest on Friday, Apr. 21, 2017, at her home in Pineland, South Carolina. As she transitioned, she was surrounded by her loving family.

Deaconess Major was educated by the public schools of Hampton County, South Carolina.  She was united in marriage to the late Deacon Willie Major.  As a result of that union, she became a member of New Castle Baptist Church, Pineland, SC. She remained a faithful member until she went home to His kingdom.

Deaconess Major had a gentle spirit, always welcoming others into her home and presence with a warm smile.  She was a woman of few words, yet full of wisdom.

Deaconess Betty E. Major was the mother of fourteen (14) children; one preceded her in death, Mrs. Betty Rebecca Major Warren.

Deacon Andrew Johnson

CUMMINGS - Deacon Andrew Johnson departed his life on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at his residence in Cummings, South Carolina, following a blessed life of longevity.

Born April 26, 1923 in Early Branch, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Mr. Robert & Mrs. Helen Young Johnson.

Deacon Johnson accepted Jesus Christ and became a member of Blunt Chapel AME Church located in Varnville, South Carolina.  He later moved his membership to Jerusalem Baptist Church in Cummings Community of Early Branch, South Carolina.  He served Jerusalem Baptist as a deacon for over forty (40) years.  He was a kind and loving individual who enjoyed singing and praying.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives (Lorraine, Annie & Margie); a son, Pastor Robert Johnson; and four grandchildren.

Peggy Marie Cooke Gooding

VARNVILLE - Mrs. Peggy Marie Cooke Gooding of Huggin’ Oak Plantation Road near Varnville, died Monday, April 24, 2017 at the home of her daughter near Ruffin.

Mrs. Gooding was born November 24, 1938, in Miley (Hampton County), a daughter of the late Clarence C and Minnie Moody Cooke.  She was the owner and operator of Peggy’s Day Care in Hampton for many years, was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church and had been active with the Jahab “Honeys” at the Shrine Club in Hampton County.

Surviving are:  One daughter:  Cheryl G. Long and husband Tommy of Ruffin;  Brothers and Sisters:  Larry Cooke and wife Ann of Varnville, Carlisle Cooke and wife Gloria of Orangeburg, Layman Cooke and wife Fran of Barnwell, Bonnie Gray of Beaufort, Faye Wooten and husband Allen of Hardeeville, and Sandra DeHay and husband Ray of Hampton;  Sister in law:  Terry Thomas and husband Gary of Highwood, Illinois;  Grandchildren:  Brad Long and wife Krystal, Randall Long and Taylor Long;  and Great Grandchildren:  Braylyn and Brynlee Long. 

Mrs. Gooding was predeceased by her husband:  Randolph “Doc” Gooding and two Brothers:  Rhett and Norris Cooke.

Christopher Michael Stanley

VARNVILLE - Christopher Michael Stanley of Stanley Loop near Varnville died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at his residence.  

Mr. Stanley was born March 3, 1988, a son of Wendell Gary Kinsey and the late Brenda Lee Stanley.  He enjoyed all sports, especially Baseball at Wade Hampton High School, Dixie Youth Baseball and the Gamecocks.  He dearly loved his Mother and his Dogs. 

Surviving besides his Father of Bamberg are:  His Grandparents:  John and Mary Ann Stanley of Varnville and several Aunts and Uncles. 

Funeral services were held 3 P.M. Saturday, April 22, 2017 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Barney Tuten, with burial in the Ehrhardt Cemetery.

Evelyn Mathis Altman, 96, beloved widow of Roy E. Altman, Sr. entered her heavenly home on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.  She was born September 23, 1920, and was the daughter of the late Louis and Maggie Mathis.  She was affectionately known as “Mammie” and was dearly loved by all who knew her.

 

She worked as a nurse’s aide for several years but her favorite job was in the Estill School system serving 20 years in a number of capacities.  There were many humorous stories from her school work and she could tell them like no one else.

 

Above all that she did, mission work was her passion.  She was involved on the local, state and international levels of missions taking her to the foreign fields as a volunteer missionary to Brazil and Russia on 6 different occasions.  She was loving and unselfish, always putting others first.  Her smile was infectious.  Her favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:28.  She will long be remembered as a prayer warrior and for her strong faith and witness!

 

She is survived by three daughters, Diane A Leary of Anderson, SC;  Christine A. Peeples (Van) of Estill, SC;  Judy A. Greene (Jerry) of Estill, SC;  one son, Dr. Roy E. Altman, Jr. (Sharyn) of Martinez, GA;  and one brother, Tom Mathis, of Moore, Oklahoma.  She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, five brothers and one son-in-law, Lee Leary.

 

She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, many nieces, nephews and special friends from every walk of life.  Our heart-felt gratitude is expressed to the Harter Nursing Center staff for their wonderful love and care.

 

A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 20th, at 3 PM in the Lawtonville Cemetery near Estill directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral home of Hampton.  The family will receive friends after the service.

James Robert “Bob” Snider

James Robert “Bob” Snider, 72, husband of Sharon Ferguson Snider died Sunday, April 23, 2017.

 

Mr. Snider was a native of Allendale, SC. and the son of the late Harry M. and Lois Fields Snider, Sr. He was a 1962 graduate of Allendale Fairfax High School, retired from the SC National Guard, retired maintenance supervisor for Allendale County Hospital and worked many years as maintenance supervisor in the textile industry in Allendale. He was a member of Allendale First Baptist Church. Bob enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and friends.

 

Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in the First Baptist Church of Allendale, with the Reverend Tim Burleson and Rev. Carol Holladay officiating. Interment will follow in the Snider Family Cemetery Brunson, SC.

 

Survivors include his wife, Sharon F. Snider; one son, Sam Snider (Theresa); two daughters, Sherry S. Williams (Addison) and Hanna Elizabeth Lucas; three grandchildren, Justin, Sidney, and Jacob; one brother, Harry M. (Ellen) Snider, Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Yvonne Snider and Linda F. McKinster; (Lowell). He was predeceased by one daughter, Tara Jeanine Snider and one brother, David Snider.

Joe Willard Collins

 

A memorial service celebrating the life of Joe Willard Collins, born March 1, 1940 in the family home near Hilda, will be held 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston. Joe was born the seventh child of Howell W. Collins and Alma Still Collins. He was affectionately called JoJo and Pappy by his loving family. He was married to his devoted wife of 40 years, Linda Sandifer Collins.

In addition to his parents, Joe is predeceased by his brothers, Achille Collins, Marvin “Bob” Collins and foster brother Everett “Cud” Mizell Collins. After graduating Blackville High School in 1958 and serving in the National Guard, Joe worked in various places of employment to include the FBI, several printing industries including TheAdvertiser Herald of Bamberg, and lastly the pressroom manager of Metro Press at The People-Sentinel newspaper in Barnwell.

Joe enjoyed maintaining his property on his Super C International tractor and piddling in his shop. Joe could repair and restore anything and took his time, as his motto was “Anything worth doing, is worth doing right”.

Mary E. Yaggi, 78, of Port Royal, passed away Tuesday, Apr. 25, 2017, at her residence.

She is survived by her daughter Donna Rogowski and her son Robert Rogowski.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Albert S. Yaggi and her son Francis Rogowski.

Deacon Charlie A. Orr was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Hampton County, SC. He was the eldest son of the late Joe and Jessie Gordon Orr. This union was blessed with seven children: six boys and one girl.
Charlie was educated in Hampton County Public Schools in Hampton, SC. He was raised working on a farm and learned the value of hard work. On Jun. 9, 1951, he was joined in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Lucille Drayton. God blessed this union with three daughters, Barbara, Mary Ann, and Marilyn. Charlie and Lucille were married for 65 wonderful years.
For 42 years, Charlie, along with his brother, George, and their younger brothers, continued their logging business, which was started by their father, Joe Orr. As a result of their vision, the business grew and became C & G Orr Logging, Inc.
Charlie enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and working in his garden. He loved his church and was the Chairman of the Deacon Board for 30 years. However, more than anything, Charlie loved and enjoyed his family. He loved it when his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were at Nana and Papa’s house Sundays after church for the family’s Sunday dinner. He would spend those Sundays sharing funny stories with his family. He loved to laugh and make others laugh.
His parents, sister, four brothers, and granddaughter, preceded him in death. Charlie entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Apr. 19, 2017 at his home on Orr Hill.
Charlie leaves to cherish his memories: a wife, Lucille Drayton Orr; three daughters, Barbara Orr-Boles (James), Varnville, SC, Mary Ann Jackson, Hampton, SC, and Marilyn Orr-Young, Varnville, SC; one brother, Samuel (Coretta) Orr, Hampton, SC; three special sisters-in-law: Etta Mae Orr and  Margaret Orr, both of Hampton, SC and Anne Coast, Savannah, GA; five grandchildren: Rev. Tracy L. (Darlene) Boles, Atlanta, GA, Natasha Boles, Columbia, SC, Stephanie Jackson (preceded him in death), Hampton, SC, Jennifer Jackson (Maurice) Henderson, Orangeburg, SC, and Embra Joseph Young, Spartanburg, SC; six great-grandchildren: Alex, Trey, Jayden, Faith, Maurice, Jr., and Abraha Love; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, Apr. 25, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. in New Castle Baptist Church, Pineland, SC, with interment following at Cypress Creek Cemetery, Pineland, SC.

Doris Brabham Harter, 94, widow of the late Cecil Wyman Harter died Wednesday, Apr. 26, 2017, Sycamore, SC.

Mrs. Harter was a native of Allendale County and a daughter of the late Ben Tillman and Eula Lee Goodson Brabham. She was a homemaker and member of Sycamore Baptist Church.

Graveside Funeral Services were held Saturday, Apr. 29, 2017, at Great Salkehatchie Cemetery with the Reverend Joseph Williams officiating.

Survivors include two sons: George Harter and Joe Harter (Debbie); four daughters: Bobbie H. Priester (Johnny), Eula H. Sineath, Phyllis H. Harvey (Buck) and Janice H. Smith (Rickey); grandchildren, Mary Ann, Stephen, John Marion, Tammi, Jerry, Renee, Joseph, Brad and Alison; 14 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; three sisters: Mary B. Yokely, Elese B. Allen and Eloise H. Crim. She was predeceased by one daughter-in-law, Patsy B. Harter (George), one son- in-law, Jerry A. Sineath (Eula), and two brothers Tillman and Melvin Brabham.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Joe Willard Collins, born Mar. 1, 1940, in the family home near Hilda, was held 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston, SC. The family visited with family and friends immediately following the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Virginia Morris, 471 Delk Avenue, Barnwell, SC 29812. His grandsons are honored to serve as his pallbearers. Joe passed away on Sunday, Apr. 30, 2017.

Joe was born the seventh child of Howell W. Collins and Alma Still Collins. He was affectionately called JoJo and Pappy by his loving family.

He was married to his devoted wife of 40 years Linda Sandifer Collins.

In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters Robin Collins Jamison of Blackville, SC and Sonja Collins (Chuck) Hiers of Barnwell, SC; sons and daughter by marriage Kevin Haynesworth (Donna)Hutto, John Darin (Amy) Hutto and Karin Hutto (Bubba) Coker all of Denmark, SC; grandchildren Kristin Hutto (Mark) Dyches, Heather Bolen (Douglas) Zorn, Jessica Nicole (Luke) Parrish, Erica Bolen (Cory) Dukes, Kamryn Raychel Coker (Eric Williams), Justin Bradley Hiers (Briana Zorn), David Nicolas Jamison, Hunter Garett (Hannah) Hutto, Carlysle Raymond “Cash” Coker, IV, Alyssa Kaye Hutto; great-grandchildren Savannah Brooke Zorn, Billy “Junior” Douglas Zorn, Jr., Brayden Marcus Johnson Dyches, Kayden Haynesworth Morris Dyches, River Isabella Parrish, Luna Claire Parrish and Hooper Bentley Hutto.

Joe was loved by his brothers and sister, Everon (Harriett) Collins of Hilda, SC, Everett Collins of Barnwell, SC, Theron (Marie) Collins of Barnwell, SC and Betty Lee Collins (Rhett) Sandifer of Blackville, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe is predeceased by his brothers Achille Collins, Marvin “Bob” Collins and foster brother Everett “Cud” Mizell Collins. After graduating Blackville High School in 1958 and serving in the National Guard, Joe worked in various places of employment to include the FBI, several printing industries including the Advertiser Herald of Bamberg, SC and lastly the pressroom manager of Metro Press at The People Sentinel newspaper in Barnwell, SC.

Joe enjoyed maintaining his property on his Super C International tractor and piddling in his shop. Joe could repair and restore anything and took his time, as his motto was “Anything worth doing is worth doing right”.

 

Ms. Karlette Marie Ling Ruth, daughter of Stello and Jimmy Mitchell, was born on Oct. 29, 1988, in Beaufort County. Karlette was a member of Martin Temple C.M.E. Church in Estill, SC.

God blessed her with a loving and dedicated family, but her affection was deeply channeled to her beloved son, Alex. They were inseparable.

On Monday, Apr. 17, 2017, after an extended illness, she entered into rest.

She leaves to cherish her memories her beloved son, Alex Gillison; Parents: Stello (Jimmy) Mitchell; one sister, Syolon (Antwane) Goldwire; two brothers: Tyheist Hosendove and Carl Greene; Aunts: Willie Mae Ryles, Mary (Leon) Dreissen, Marshell (LeAnthony) Smith, Francina Hopkins, Penny (Ben) Holmes and Patricia Comier; Uncles: Jerome (Sharon) Ling, Jesse (Daisy) Ling, Alexander (Sherry) Ling, Kenneth Brown, Jessie (Carolyn) Grant, Johnny (Patricia) Ruth, Leroy (Tara) Ruth, Franklin (Deloris) Ruth, Michael (Sophie) Ruth, Clarence (Shay) Ruth; Grandparents: Franklin (Bertie Mae) Ruth, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held Friday, Apr. 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Martin Temple C.M.E. Church, Estill, SC, the Reverend Curly Teasdell, Pastor and Pastor Jackie Taylor, Presiding, with interment following at the Breller Field Cemetery, Garnett, SC.
